Over 40 held after violent protests break out at LPG bottling plant in Bengal
Tension gripped the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd's LPG bottling plant in West Bengal's Budge Budge on Tuesday night after a violent protest by drivers and porters broke out. The agitators are demanding payment of 'pending dues of three years'. Over 40 protestors have been arrested for the agitation which saw bikes vandalized, gas cylinders opened and fuel poured onto the streets. The unrest began on Tuesday night following a meeting called to discuss the 'long-pending dues'. The meeting was reportedly scheduled to be led by Jahangir Khan, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and party observer for Budge Budge, known for his proximity to Diamond Harbour MP and TMC All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. According to the protesters, the drivers were called at Khan's office in the area for the meeting when 'several miscreants suddenly came and attacked the drivers' and assaulted them. The assault triggered an immediate protest. On being informed, a large contingent of police from the Budge Budge police station rushed to the spot. The team was led by Additional Superintendent of Police Headquarters Amlan Kusum Ghosh. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) was also deployed. A protesting driver, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, 'We had to protest for our food. Our backs are against the wall. We were forced to take to the streets. Three meetings were held in a week but no solution was found. The leaders did not come forward to help.' Another protestor said, 'We are 300 drivers and 300 helpers working here. Each driver (is supposed to) get more than Rs 1 lakh. They want to pay 40 percent of our dues. We will not accept it.' Diamond Harbour Superintendent of Police Rahul Goswami said that Budge Budge police have launched an investigation into the incident. 'Police have set up a picket in the area due to tension. I am also keeping an eye on the situation. The police are collecting CCTV footage to identify the culprits,' he said. The protest drew sharp criticism from Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, who posted on X on Wednesday, calling it 'a glaring example of the TMC's syndicate culture spiralling out of control'. Adhikari said that 'a single spark could have ignited a massive fire, potentially engulfing the entire bottling plant near Budge Budge Institute of Technology (BBIT) College, Jagannath Gupta Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital, and surrounding areas in a deadly inferno.' US CG Urbom all for empowering squash players
US Consul General in Karachi Scott Urbom has said that there is no dearth of talent in Pakistan, it is hoped that a great player like Jahangir Khan will be born again. He was present at the prize distribution ceremony of the National Junior and Women's Squash Championship as the Chief Guest and spoke to the media at the occassion. The event was organized by the Sindh Squash Association at the PSF Jahangir Khan Squash Complex in collaboration with the Pakistan American Business Council. Urbom added that it is an honour for the United States to host the 2028 Olympics and see the return of cricket to the Olympics after 138 years. He also is welcomed the induction of squash in the games program and expressed joy that squash will be promoted by its inclusion in the Olympics. He emphasised on the role of sports in empowering women. "There is no dearth of talented and qualified men and women in Pakistan, it is welcome to organize squash competitions to encourage emerging players with the support of the Pakistan American Business Council, squash legend Jahangir Khan made history by accomplishing great feats.," the US Consul General said. "It is an honor for the United States to host the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. It is a matter of pride that after the Paris Olympics 1900, cricket has now been included in the next Olympics. Making squash a part of the Olympic competitions will promote this sport. Sports play an important role in women's empowerment. My daughters also expressed their abilities and talents by playing football, wrestling and rugby. It is hoped that the process of development in squash in Pakistan will continue. Pakistan is gradually trying to regain its lost position in squash. The World Under-23 Squash Championship held in Karachi was also a link in this series." Squash legend Jahangir Khan also expressed his views, "I try to guide emerging players in the best way he could. The Sindh Squash Association is also organizing quality competitions. Its academies provide good and best facilities to the players. The training is ongoing, the players should also take advantage of these facilities and work hard for good results. The sponsorship of institutions like McDonald's for the promotion of sports, especially squash, is a commendable act." On the other hand, Sindh Squash Association President Asad Adnan said that with the support of the American Business Council and the Sindh government is providing free education and training at the academy. "Good results have started to emerge. McDonald's is providing full support and assistance as the main sponsor. After Karachi, steps will be taken to promote squash in Hyderabad and Sukkur," he added. Similarly, former national champion Sadia Gul, who made her name in the women's event, said that she is very happy to step on the squash court after four years and win the title. In the future, she will try to make Pakistan famous by participating in national and international events. McDonald's COO Jamil Mughal said that they will continue to play their national role in the promotion of sports and other positive activities.

US Consul General Scott Uzum says no shortage of talent in Pakistan

Squash legend Jahangir Khan, also present at the ceremony, said he always tries to mentor and guide young players. 'The Sindh Squash Association is organising quality competitions, and its academies are providing excellent facilities for training,' he said. 'Players should make full use of these opportunities and work hard to achieve good results,' he added. Jahangir also praised sponsors like McDonald's for supporting squash development. U-23 World Squash begins in Karachi today
Pakistan is all set to host the first-ever Under-23 World Squash Championship which starts from today (Sunday) April 6-10 at DHA Creek Club Squash Stadium. Players from 32 countries will be participating in what will be the first major squash event in Pakistan after decades. This is the first time the world governing body is organising a World Championship in this age group. Since squash has been included in the 2028 Summer Olympics, this World event will allow top players to participate in the Olympic Games. Last week, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, on behalf of the Sindh government, handed over a cheque for Rs30 million to Adnan Asad, an official of Sindh Squash Champion, in support of the upcoming Under-23 World Squash Championship. Speaking at a press conference alongside Sports Secretary, Abdul Aleem Lashari and Adnan Asad, Sharjeel reaffirmed the Sindh government's commitment to promoting sports and enhancing Pakistan's global image through such initiatives. Pakistan has a glorious history in squash, with legends like Jahangir Khan, Hashim Khan, and Jansher Khan, and most recently, Hamza Khan, who won the World Junior Squash Championship in 2023. Pakistan has hosted a number of international tournaments and has many professional training centers around the country. Pakistan reached its peak in the 1980s and 1990s during the reigns of Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan. Both players won many laurels for the country. Jansher won the World Open eight times and the British Open six times. He was ranked number 1 in the world for six years. Jahangir Khan is easily the greatest professional squash player of all time with an unofficial record of having 555-game winning streak. Between 1950 and 1997, Pakistan amassed over 30 British Open titles, 14 World Open titles and many more titles.
