QB Trevor Harris cleared as Roughriders return from bye week
Quarterback Trevor Harris was back in his familiar starting spot at the Saskatchewan Roughriders returned to practice following the team's first bye week of the season. Article content While backup Jake Maier picked up a 37-18 victory against the B.C. Lions to improve Saskatchewan's record to 4-0 in Week 4, Harris will be back under centre this week as the Roughriders get set to host the Calgary Stampeders (3-1) on Friday night (7 p.m., TSN) at Mosaic Stadium in Week 6 of the CFL season. Article content Article content 'I felt like my bye week was last week,' said Harris. 'I'm excited to be back out here.' Article content After Harris suffered a head injury in Saskatchewan's Week 3 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on June 20, the quarterback entered concussion protocol after the game and wasn't cleared in time to play the Roughriders' Week 4 contest against the Lions on June 28. Article content However, that's not to say Harris didn't plead his case to play in the game against B.C. Article content 'That's just Trev — he's going to try to make his case no matter what the situation is for him,' Roughriders head coach Corey Mace said on Monday. 'He's the ultimate competitor. He feels like he can go but we just kind of followed the guidelines for ourselves and just wanted to play it smart. Article content 'And I'm happy we did. We've got a lot of faith in that quarterback room, and we felt confident that we'd be able to go out and still execute at a high level. And now that he's been completely cleared … I think it was just the right decision. Article content 'You don't want to play with that one. Every team has a protocol to follow and we just made sure we did it the right way.' Article content Article content As the Roughriders returned to practice on Monday on the heels of their first bye week of the season, Harris was asked how close he was to being able to play against the Lions. Article content Article content 'I was fine,' Harris told reporters. 'Let's not probably go down that road. Article content 'A little bit of a shouting match but always trust what the doctors are saying. Article content 'They're looking out for our best interest and at the end of the day, we've only got one brain, and we're all going to be 55 and 60 someday. And I've got four kids and although I told them I was ready to go and ready to play, they took matters in their own hands just based off of what they thought and what they gathered. Article content 'But we're back. We're good.' Article content After Argonauts defensive back Kenneth George Jr. was forced to leave the game following a cut block by Roughriders' receiver Dhel Duncan-Busby, Toronto defensive lineman Jordan Williams threw a high hit on Harris on the very next play.

Roughriders' head coach confident Trevor Harris will be available post bye week
Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris (7) high-fives some fans on his way off the field after the conclusion of the CFL Hamilton Tiger Cats home opener against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Hamilton, Ont., on Saturday, June 14, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Peter Power Saskatchewan Roughriders' head coach Corey Mace expects starting quarterback Trevor Harris to return to the lineup after the team's Week 5 bye. 'Trevor will be fine,' Mace said following Saskatchewan's 37-18 win over the B.C. Lions Saturday. 'The timing for the protocol didn't work out.' 'I would expect him to be ready for Calgary,' he added. Harris missed two practices last week as he entered the league's concussion protocol, in addition to what the team described as an illness – forcing the quarterback to be sidelined Saturday night. Backup Jake Maier started in Harris' place. 'We have to find roles in this organization,' Maier said after recording his first win as a member of the Riders. 'I really enjoyed contributing to the team tonight and when they need me, they need me.' 'Whatever the future holds, I'm going to be a great teammate and make sure I'm ready for whenever I'm needed again,' he added. Mace adds the bye week is coming at a really good time. Other offensive weapons like Shawn Bane Jr. and Samuel Emilus joined Harris on the one-game injured list this past week. Offensive lineman Payton Collins has also been week-to-week with a knee injury he sustained in Week 1. 'I know the guys are looking forward to it,' he said. 'Certainly, we're waiting for a couple of guys to see what their status is coming off the bye and a little bit of time off. Even though it's only four games in, [it is a] physical, physical football game.' It wasn't all good news Saturday night. Saskatchewan's offensive line experienced another blow. Guard Trevon Tate suffered an upper-body injury in the second quarter. He appeared to be favouring his arm and was taken to the locker room and did not return for the remainder of the game. There was no available update on his status but the guard was seen in a sling after the game, according to Mace. Running back Thomas Bertand-Hudon also left Saturday's game with a non-contact injury and did not return. Star tailback A.J. Ouellette agreed the bye is coming at an opportunistic time. 'Excited to get some receivers back,' he told reporters. 'Hopefully some of the offensive line can recover.' Others like LB C.J. Avery, OL Phillipe Gagnon and WR Kian Schaffer-Baker remain on the six-game injured list and are not expected to return after the bye. With this week's bye, the team will not practice and does not play a game until July 11 when they host the Calgary Stampeders. The Riders head into its Week 5 bye with a 4-0 record, the exact same record they had in 2024 in head coach Corey Mace's inaugural season at the helm. Saskatchewan's best start to a season is 6-0, which it achieved in 2008.

The Big Question: Will Trevor Harris start at quarterback in Saskatchewan's next game?
After a 4-0 start to the 2025 CFL season, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are into their first bye week of the season. Article content And heading into the break, there's one question we probably know the answer to but will need to wait until next week before it's officially confirmed: Article content Article content Will Trevor Harris start at quarterback in Saskatchewan's next game? Article content That is 'The Big Question' this week and it appears Harris will in fact return to his starting role when the Roughriders return to practice next week ahead of Saskatchewan's Week 6 contest against the Calgary Stampeders on July 11. Article content Harris was victorious in his first three starts this season, including Saskatchewan's Week 3 game in Toronto on June 20, when the quarterback took a late hit to the helmet before being knocked to the turf. Article content Harris stayed in the game and it wasn't until after the game that he apparently started feeling concussion-related symptoms. The Roughriders put Harris in concussion protocol and the veteran quarterback was forced to miss the first two days of practice last week for the Green and White as they prepared to host the B.C. Lions on the weekend. Article content While Jake Maier got the reps on Day 1 and 2, Harris returned for the team's closed practice on Thursday as a full participant before being placed on the one-game injured list on Friday when the team released its depth chart. Article content Evidently, Harris didn't clear concussion protocol in time for a full contact and a return to the field on Saturday. Since he was trending in the right direction and appears fine, head coach Corey Mace said after Saturday's game that Harris should in fact return after the team's bye week. Article content 'The timing for the protocol didn't work, but Trevor will be fine,' said Mace. 'I would expect him to be ready for Calgary.' Article content Article content As for Maier, he did what he was asked to do on Saturday as the veteran of 45 career CFL starts made his first start with the Green and White. Article content 'I was really pleased overall with his with his effort, which was clearly more than enough for us,' Mace said of Maier. Article content Running back A.J. Ouellette had a career game with 138 rushing yards while Saskatchewan's defence chipped in with three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by Tevaughn Campbell. Article content After the game, Maier said getting his first start in green and white was 'amazing' but even he knows he'll be relegated to a backup role once again when Harris returns next week.

10 Thoughts: Roughriders show how important experienced depth can be
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have an undefeated record, but the CFL club is admittedly not perfect. Article content On Saturday, the Green and White improved to 4-0 to begin the 2025 CFL season with a 37-18 victory over the visiting B.C. Lions in a game that featured a pair of veteran backup quarterbacks going head-to-head for their respective teams. Article content Article content Here are the top takeaways from the contest as the Riders enter their first bye week of the season. Article content 10 Thoughts: Article content 1. Jake Maier made his first start at quarterback for the Green and White in place of the injured Trevor Harris and his teammates made it easy on him. While Maier was effective moving the ball at times through the air, a strong rushing attack and a defence that forced four turnovers helped take some pressure off him. In 45 career starts with Calgary prior to coming to Saskatchewan, Maier has thrown for 300 yards on 13 different occasions. He threw for 170 yards on Saturday night and that was more than enough to get the win. Article content 2. It's a luxury for the Roughriders to have an experienced backup. Sure Maier is no Harris but unlike what Saskatchewan went last through with the inexperience of Shea Patterson, who made his first career CFL start in 2024 when Harris was injured, Maier — a veteran of 45 career starts — looked comfortable in the pocket all night even if he didn't make every throw (13 of 23). Experienced depth can pay dividends. Article content 3. Leading the way in the running game was A.J. Ouellette, who had a career-high 139 yards on a career-high 23 carries in his sixth CFL season. The 2022 and 2023 East Division all-star has had a great last three games for the Riders and is poised for a big year if he keeps this up. I think this is what everyone expected in 2024. Article content 4. Everybody has a job to do on the team and Tommy Stevens might be the best at doing his. The short-yardage quarterback has been outstanding in his role this season and proved his worth again on Saturday night. While he took a loss of two in the first half, Stevens converted on a pair of QB sneaks in the second half before cementing the game on Saskatchewan's final drive with five carries for 29 yards. Article content Article content 5. On the other side, Jeremiah Masoli didn't look great for B.C. While the Lions had two effective touchdown drives, aided by the play of running back James Butler, Masoli threw three interceptions including a costly pick six that was the turning point in the game. If the Lions (1-3) want to contend for a playoff spot this year, they better hope Rourke can return soon. Article content 6. After notching his first interception in the CFL since 2018 last week against Toronto, Riders defensive back Tevaughn Campbell was the one scoring on that pick-six as he put exclamation on the first half with an interception returned for a touchdown to put the Riders up 16-7 at the break. Filling that cornerback spot was one of the biggest needs for the Roughriders this off-season and Campbell — who has adjusted back to the CFL game after six years in the NFL — has been a great addition.

Roughriders improve to 4-0 with victory over B.C. Lions
A.J. Ouellette recorded his first 100-yard game in green and white as the Saskatchewan Roughriders beat the B.C. Lions 37-18 on Saturday night in Week 4 of the CFL season. In front of an announced crowd of 27,804 at Mosaic Stadium, the Roughriders improved to 4-0 for a second straight season while the Lions fell to 1-3. In the victory, Ouellette rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown while Saskatchewan's defence also chipped in with points as Tevaughn Campbell recorded a pick six in the first half as the Riders led 16-7 at the half. While Ouellette was the offensive star for the Riders, Saskatchewan's offence was led by backup quarterback Jake Maier, who drew the start for the injured Trevor Harris. Maier finished the night 13 of 23 for 170 yards and a touchdown. On the other side, the Lions were guided by backup quarterback Jeremiah Masoli with starter Nathan Rourke out due to injury of his own. Masoli completed 16 of 29 passes for 173 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. On Saskatchewan's first drive of the game, Ouellette rumbled 26 yards on the first play before Maier connected with Mitch Picton for a first down through the air. From there, Brett Lauther nailed a 34-yard field goal to put the Roughriders up 3-0. Near the end of the first quarter, after another first-down carry by Ouellette, Maier found a wide-open Joe Robustelli up the sideline, as the receiver made a 34-yard catch while keeping himself in bounds. After the drive stalled, Lauther came in to make a 48-yard field goal to make it 6-0 Riders. On B.C.'s next drive, the Roughriders defence forced a turnover as linebacker C.J. Reavis punched the ball loose from Lions' running back James Butler, before defensive end Lake Korte-Moore jumped on the fumble. However, the Roughriders were forced to punt on the ensuing series. The Lions bounced back on their next offensive series as Butler picked up a 38-yard gain along the ground before Masoli hit Keon Hatcher for the 15-yard touchdown to put the Lions in front 7-6. Before the half was up, Lauther hit a 40-yard field goal to put Saskatchewan back on top 9-7. As B.C. looked to put points on the board late in the half, Campbell — who had a pick last week against Toronto — had other ideas as he intercepted Masoli and returned it 89 yards for a touchdown. With the convert, the Riders took the 16-7 lead at the break. The Roughriders increased their lead to 22-7 on the first drive of the second half as Maier and company engineered a 10-play, 54-yard drive capped off by an eight-yard touchdown by Ouellette, who eclipsed the 100-yard mark on the play. Saskatchewan missed a two-point convert attempt following the major. Near the end of the third quarter, the Lions marched down the field 69 yards on nine plays to Saskatchewan's one-yard line before the Riders snuffed out the drive, leaving the Lions to kick a field goal to cut the lead to 23-10. After a rouge scored by Saskatchewan made it 24-10, the Roughriders defence put them into scoring range once again as Rolan Milligan Jr. intercepted Masoli and returned it 41 yards to B.C.'s 11-yard line before Lauther added his fourth field goal of the game to make it 27-10 with 4:35 left. On B.C.'s next drive, the Lions turned it over once again as Masoli was intercepted by Antoine Brooks Jr. From there, Maier connected with Dhel Duncan-Busby on a 42-yard touchdown strike to put the Riders up 34-10 with the convert. With 2:09 to go, the Lions added a touchdown as Butler found the end zone from four yards. B.C. added a two-point convert to make it a 16-point game. From there, the Riders added another field goal as Lauther connected from 24 yards out to make it a 37-18 final. Near the end of the first half, Roughriders left guard Trevon Tate went down as he looked to be favouring his left arm. He went to the locker room with the trainers as Zack Fry came into the game in his spot for the rest of the game. In the third quarter, Campbell took a knee and was evaluated by trainers before walking off to the medical tent. Kerfalla Exume entered the game in his spot while Brooks also saw time at cornerback later in the game. Early in the fourth quarter, running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon limped off the field with trainers and did not return. The Roughriders have their first bye week of the season next week.
