Watch 29-year-old Rays rookie Jake Mangum of Mississippi State hit inside-the-park home run

Jake Mangum's second career home run in the MLB didn't even need to leave the ballpark. The former Mississippi State baseball star hit an inside-the-park home run on July 2 for the Tampa Bay Rays. He hit the ball to deep center field, and it caromed off the glove of Athletics center fielder Denzel Clarke. Clarke fell to the ground and Mangum sped around the bases. There was no throw to home plate. Mangum, 29, made his MLB debut on March 30 for the Rays and has had a spectacular season that's kept him in the lineup. He is batting .314 with 18 runs, 26 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 50 games. Advertisement The Pearl native played for the Bulldogs from 2016-19. He batted .357 in his MSU career and is the SEC all-time hits leader. MSU made four NCAA tournament super regionals and two College World Series while he was on the team. He played in the minor leagues since 2019 for the New York Mets, Miami Marlins and Rays organizations before getting the call-up. His first career home run was hit on May 31 at Houston, with his parents watching from the crowd. The Rays are 47-39, holding the second wild card spot in the American League. Chandler Simpson's call back up to the MLB is Inevitable

Chandler Simpson's call back up to the MLB is Inevitable originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In what was a shock to many originally the Tampa Bay Rays chose to option Chandler Simpson back to their triple-A affilate, the Durham Bulls. This brought back outfielder Jake Mangum from 10-day injured list. Advertisement Prior to being optioned, Simpson led the league in stolen bases since making his debut in the majors, and had a .330 batting average over his last 16 games. So why did the Rays end up doing this? It may have been to get one last look at a player they invested heavily in, Christopher Morel. Morel who has struggled since being acquired in a trade from the Chicago Cubs, has already been optioned twice. If the Rays were to option him a third time he would be forced to be put on waivers. Morel has improved his play since Simpson has gone back down to the minor leagues. His batting average in the month of May sat at .143, over June he has had a .310 BA. The Rays if they want to find a way to open up a spot for Simpson on the roster have to move off of someone. Even if that player is not Morel. Advertisement Simpson since being back in triple-A has a .358 batting average. His speed that fans have come to love has not gone anywhere either. Over 15 games he has nine stolen bases. The question for Simpson is not will he get called back up to play for the Rays. It is a matter of when he will get that call.
