Wimbledon set to begin on Monday

Tennis fans are bracing themselves for a few hot-headed moments during this year's Wimbledon tournament, which gets underway on Monday, after a spate of rows involving players in the build up to the competition. The courts are heating up already and the famous Grass Court Competition hasn't even begun. Spanish champion 'Alejandro Davidovitch Fokina' had some choice words for the umpire during his match against 'Jakub Mensik' at the Lexus Eastbourne Open earlier this week, resulting in him throwing his racquet to the ground after losing his cool at the end of the game, which saw his opponant come very close to levelling the match on sets. EASTBOURNE, ENGLAND – JUNE 26: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain plays a backhand against Jakub Mensik of Czechia during the Men's Singles Quarter Final match on Day Four of the Lexus Eastbourne Open at Devonshire Park on June 26, 2025 in Eastbourne, England. (Photo byfor LTA) The umpire wasn't impressed and proceeded to hand him a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Spaniard couldn't believe it, protesting that the punishment was undeserved and refused to accept the warning, but that still wasn't the end of it, as he went on to tell the umpire that he was the 'worst umpire I've ever seen', and 'I don't know how you sit there' Fans of the sport could be set for similar scenes in the womens competition with Russian-born Yulia Putintseva also making headlines last week. Putintseva Julia (Kazakstan) during a game against Kudermetova Veronika (Photo by Valya Egorshin/NurPhoto via Getty Images) The Russian-born star was told 'Nobody likes you' during a frosty post-match exchange with her rival Maria Sakkari, after she refused to look her opponant in the eye while shaking hands post match at the Bad Homberg Open. Its also reported Putintseva appeared to take issue with Sakkari after match point, telling her to 'go f**k yourself' after giving her a half-hearted handshake at the net. But an even more notorious incident occured on court in New York last year, when 30-year-old Putintseva, who is world No 34, glared at a young ball girl, when two balls were accidentally thrown to her at the same time, that awkward moment earned her worldwide critisism. With personalities like these, we can look forward to some exciting and also tense moments at the most highly contested competition of them all, which begins at Centre Court in Wimbledon on Monday (June 30th).

Wimbledon star tells umpire he's 'the worst I've ever seen' after refusing to accept warning for smashing his racket to the floor

A tennis star who will be competing at Wimbledon had some choice words for the umpire at the Eastbourne Open on Friday after losing his cool during the quarter-finals. Alejandro Davidovich won the first set against Jakub Mensik and had just gone 5-4 down in the second when the incident occurred. Davidovich showed his frustration as he threw his racket to the floor following the conclusion of the game, which had put his opponent on the verge of levelling the match on sets. The umpire wasn't impressed and proceeded to hand him a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Spaniard couldn't believe it, protesting that the punishment was undeserved. He asked him to call the supervisor before saying that he didn't accept that warning. 'Call your supervisor' 😬 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was not happy with this code violation at Eastbourne… — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) June 26, 2025 It didn't end there as he went on to tell the official that he was 'the worst umpire I've ever seen' and said 'I don't know how you sit there.' Davidovich's argument was that he threw the racket outside of the baseline and did so in a manner that wasn't reckless. The supervisor arrived and agreed with the umpire's decision, saying: 'it's a grass court. We don't do that on grass courts.' Fortunately for Fokina he proceeded to win the the next game and the following two games to wrap up a 6-4, 7-5 victory and progress to the semi-finals. He is now due to play American Taylor Fritz in the semi-final on the south coast ahead of Sunday's final. Davidovich Fokina has been ranked as the No26 seed for Wimbledon, which begins next Monday.

Tennis Star Throws Racket Into Crowd During Meltdown

Tennis Star Throws Racket Into Crowd During Meltdown originally appeared on The Spun. If you're attending the 2025 HSBC Championships at The Queen's Club, you may want to stay alert for flying rackets. Advertisement During this Wednesday's match between Roberto Bautista Agut and Jakub Mensik, the latter chucked his racket into the crowd out of frustration. This happened after Mensik failed to convert a crucial break point in the second set. Mensik started looking at his hand to make it seem like it was an accident. However, that doesn't excuse him from being disqualified. "Oh my goodness. Well, that's why you have to be careful. What will be the outcome here, because that's landed in the crowd?" Lee Goodall said in the broadcast booth, via Express. Luckily for Mensik, he was allowed to continue playing. That being said, he ended up losing to Bautista Agut in three sets. (Photo by)Most tennis fans couldn't believe that Mensik got away with chucking his racket, even if it was an accident. Advertisement "This guy is a menace and will hurt someone in the court again," one fan wrote on X. "I really like Jakub Mensik, but he's lucky he wasn't defaulted here," a second fan commented. "Jakub Mensik has just thrown his racquet on purpose in the crowd. Imagine if Novak Djokovic did this? Defaulted and fined," another fan said. Thankfully, no one was harmed during this incident at Andy Murray Arena. Mensik is hoping to shake past this blunder and make noise at Wimbledon later this month. He's coming off a second-round appearance in the French Open. Moving forward though, Mensik can't be doing this on a consistent basis. Not every chair umpire will rule this incident a code violation.
