Pumpwell-Padil road to be ready by month-end

Mangaluru: Even as the new DC office complex is getting ready for inauguration, the four-lane work on the Pumpwell (Mahaveer Circle) - Padil road, which is the main access to the new district administrative headquarters, is also nearing completion. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Chief minister is likely to inaugurate the new office complex on May 16. Arun Prabha KS, the general manager (technical) , Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), told TOI that the work on the entire stretch is likely to be completed by the end of this month. The cost of the project escalated to nearly Rs 36 crore, he said. The work on the 2.8 km road, which is considered a major gateway to the city, was progressing at a snail's pace. The MSCL started developing the old highway stretch in Feb 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 24 crore since the NHAI made denotification for the stretch, which was earlier part of Mangaluru - Bengaluru NH 75. The delay has been causing inconveniences on the busy stretch. Since there are many additional works related to the construction of retaining walls and underground drainage, the project cost has escalated. Meanwhile, work related to the laying of LPG pipelines and water supply pipelines of the Jalasiri 24x7 project also led to delays in the project. With the work on Pumpwell–Padil road nearing completion, the stretch will help those who visit the new DC office complex, which will be inaugurated by the chief minister. District minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who conducted an inspection in the first week of April, told reporters that the complex will be inaugurated by Siddaramaiah. Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath requested the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to name the new four-lane road between Pumpwell to Padil Junction as Kankanady Garadi Road since the Kankanady Brahma Baidarkala Garodi Kshetra is located on the stretch. The proposal was referred to the standing committee on town planning.
