Former Mavericks' Player Development Coach Joins the Magic: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Orlando Magic made a key acquisition for their coaching staff on Wednesday. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Magic signed God Shammgod as an assistant coach for the 2025-26 season. The former NBA player has been a part of the NBA coaching staff for quite some time. Advertisement Before joining the Magic, Shammgod was a player development coach for the Dallas Mavericks. He joined the coaching staff in 2019 following his stint in the same role in Providence. According to reports, he played a significant role in the development of players Bryce Cotton and Kris Dunn. Shammgod is the fifth member of Jason Kidd's coaching staff to leave following the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade. Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley watches from the Butler II-Imagn Images The coaches who have left the Mavericks are Sean Sweeney, Alex Jensen, Marko Milic and Darrell Armstrong. "Dallas Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod has agreed to join the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Shammgod has worked for the Mavericks since 2019 and now receives a larger role in Orlando," Charania reported. Advertisement Shammgod will have some familiarity as he joins Jamahl Mosley's staff. Mosley was an assistant coach for the Mavericks from 2014 to 2021, before he was hired by the Orlando Magic to lead the team. The former professional basketball player appeared in 20 games for the Washington Wizards in the 1997-98 season. During that stretch, he averaged 3.1 points on 32.8% shooting from the field. Following that, he moved to China to continue his career. He mostly played internationally before returning to the U.S. to become a coach. Stephen A. Smith urges legendary Mavericks coach to join Magic, Jamahl Mosley

The post Stephen A. Smith urges legendary Mavericks coach to join Magic, Jamahl Mosley appeared first on ClutchPoints. On Wednesday morning's broadcast of ESPN's First Take, Stephen A. Smith publicly called on longtime Dallas Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod to leave the franchise and join the Orlando Magic under head coach Jamahl Mosley. Advertisement 'I also saw some reports about Orlando being interested in God Shammgod Wells. He is an assistant coach on the Dallas Mavericks,' Smith said. 'I covered this brother when he was in high school in New York City. We go back a long ways or whatever… I'm advising him on national television: leave. Get the hell up out of Dallas.' Shammgod, a New York City native and former Providence standout, has served in a player development role with the Mavericks since 2016. He is widely respected for his ball-handling expertise and has worked with numerous All-Star players during his tenure. Smith's comments follow reports that the Orlando Magic are targeting Shammgod to join Mosley's coaching staff. Mosley previously served as a Mavericks assistant for seven seasons before becoming Orlando's head coach in 2021. The two coaches share a long-standing professional relationship that could be rekindled as the Magic continue to reshape their identity. Stephen A. Smith cites Mavericks' changes, backs God Shammgod-to-Magic move 'With new ownership and some of the decisions that they're making to curve course of whatever have you… they seem to be more about numbers rather than taking care of the people they need to take care of,' Smith said. 'And I'm not saying it's an awful thing because I understand business decisions need to be made every day, but with Kyrie Irving, I think he's been lowballed… and God Shamgod get the hell up out of there.' Advertisement He continued: 'Go to Orlando with Mosley. You know who that brother is, get the hell up out of there and start anew. By the way, there's no state income taxes in Florida too. You're good, get the hell up out of there.' Smith cited Irving's contract as one of his concerns with the Mavericks' direction. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Irving declined his $42.9 million player option for the 2025–26 season and is instead expected to sign a three-year, $119 million extension with Dallas. The deal includes a player option for the 2027–28 season. The Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers at the 2025 trade deadline, signaling a shift in organizational priorities. Meanwhile, the Magic have retooled their core around Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs, recently acquiring Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies in a blockbuster deal last week. As they continue to build under head coach Jamahl Mosley, Orlando is looking to reinforce its player development system. Shammgod's potential addition could bring veteran experience and skill development expertise to one of the league's most promising young teams. Magic Strike Another Aggressive Trade Following Desmond Bane Deal

Magic Strike Another Aggressive Trade Following Desmond Bane Deal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Orlando Magic made another aggressive trade after landing Desmond Bane, but this time the franchise did so during the NBA draft. The event expanding to two days appears to have led to more trades in the second round as teams get an extended period of time to negotiate deals. Advertisement Less than two weeks after trading away four draft picks to land Bane, the Magic once again moved a package of selections to snag another target. Orlando traded their two second-round selections (No. 46 and No. 57) to the Boston Celtics for the No. 32 pick. The Celtics also landed two additional future second-round selections (2026, 2027) in the deal, per ESPN's Shams Charania. Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley stands on the court in the first quarter against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Richard-Imagn Images During the ESPN broadcast, Brian Windhorst labeled the trade as a "big price" for the Magic to pay in order to move up in the second round. The NBA insider pondered if the Celtics had another team interested in the pick as well which prompted the hefty package. As for the Magic, the team snagged French forward Noah Penda to add to the strong defensive prowess already on the roster. ESPN's Jonathan Givony reported than Penda plans to play in the NBA this season while adding this will not be a draft and stash move for Orlando. Advertisement "Noah Penda needs to prove himself as a shooter, but he has literally everything else you'd hope for in a role player," Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor detailed on X. "Elite high feel player for the Magic. If shots fall, he's gonna be in the NBA for well over a decade." Orlando Magic Called Out By Bomani Jones After Desmond Bane Trade

Orlando Magic Called Out By Bomani Jones After Desmond Bane Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Orlando Magic made a bold move recently as they dealt Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and four first-round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies for high-scoring, smooth shooting guard Desmond Bane. Advertisement The deal helped to round out the Magic's roster with a scoring guard capable of making an immediate impact for coach Jamahl Mosley's team, which has shown promise in recent years but was knocked out of the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs by the defending NBA Champion Boston Celtics in five games. On Monday, former ESPN host and currently Wave Sports Entertainment host Bomani Jones shared his thoughts on the trade, including critical thoughts on the plans and state of the Magic franchise. Advertisement "And so to me without the presence of a front line superstar, I don't understand what they're doing. I do not feel as good about the idea, with your two best players being Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner," Jones added. "I think at best it's a handful of low spades, and I think that Desmond Bane is somebody that qualifies as a low spade. I'm not saying they can't be trumps..." Jones continued on his show, 'The Right Time With Bomani Jones,' in a clip shared Monday. Magic Head Coach Offers Verdict on Potential Offseason Changes in Orlando

The Orlando Magic were just eliminated from the NBA Playoffs on Tuesday, getting blown out by the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the first round. Orlando's final game of the season highlighted the offensive struggles the Magic had throughout the season. Boston Celtics Orlando Magic playoff series© Mike Watters-Imagn Images Although the season was marked by injuries to key players like Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs, the team struggled to establish consistent offensive rhythm. Advertisement Despite making the playoffs, Orlando ranked among the bottom four teams in the league in points per game, three-pointers made, field goal percentage and field goal attempts. Head Coach Jamahl Mosley addresses possible roster changes The Orlando Magic's end of season interviews took place on Thursday and all of the players and coaches were asked about the 2024-25 season as well as seasons ahead. Head Coach Jamahl Mosley was asked if he was excited to maybe swap some defensive-minded players to bring in more offense. Mosley responded abruptly, saying, "Yes. I'm okay with that." Mosley seemed very convinced that their offensive struggles were the main problem behind not being able to get over the first round hump of the playoffs. Advertisement In earlier interviews, Mosley took to the press, saying that he's ready to make that next step in the franchise and getting over the first round hump. "There's no excitement in getting to the playoffs. It sounds good, but there's no excitement in getting bumped out of the first round... What sounds better, to me, is your aspirations to win a championship," he explained. Orlando hasn't been able to make it past the first round of the postseason since 2010, a year that the Magic lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to the same team they lost to 15 years later – the Celtics. It appears the Magic could make roster moves this offseason in an effort to build a true championship-contending team in Orlando.
