Cassidy signs off in style with double win in London as Porsche clinches teams' and manufacturers' titles
LONDON: Nick Cassidy capped off his final weekend with Jaguar TCS Racing in spectacular fashion, claiming victory in Round 16 at the London E-Prix. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The win marked his third in a row and Jaguar's fifth in six races, wrapping up an emotional send-off for both the New Zealander and team principal James Barclay. Cassidy's lights-to-flag triumph at a sold-out ExCeL London also secured him second place in the FIA Drivers' World Championship. Having scored just a single point in the opening six rounds of the season, his late surge underlined a remarkable turnaround. 'Honestly I love racing in this place,' said Cassidy. 'It's not been that kind to me in the last few years, but this weekend it's absolutely delivered. When this stadium is packed full of people it's a pleasure to race here and it's great for Formula E. Also, it's my last race for the team, again I've had the best car today, and this one is 100 percent for them. 'When the tyres are working well, when the car's perfect, everything becomes efficient. For sure it wasn't easy at the start to keep the lead, but I think between Mitch (Evans) and myself we could manage that well. I'm gutted for him, to have had a one-two would have been perfect,' he added. Cassidy finished 13.5 seconds clear of Mahindra Racing's Nyck de Vries, the second-largest winning margin in Formula E history. Only Antonio Félix da Costa has previously won three consecutive races. 'It was certainly a very challenging race,' said de Vries. 'Obviously Nick didn't want to get too down on energy versus everyone behind, so he was making sure he stayed on the same energy as us and that resulted in a little bit of a concertina effect behind us. 'I'm very pleased to bring home another podium and give P4 to our team, because they've done an incredible job. To consider that last year we qualified last on merit, and we've come back from such a long way – finishing fourth in the championship here this year is a great effort, so I'm very proud of everyone at Mahindra,' he added. Envision Racing's Sebastien Buemi completed the podium, charging through the field from 19th on the grid to third place, his second podium in three races after also finishing in the top three in Jakarta. 'In the end it was important to not get caught up in those incidents, I think I was lucky enough to make sure I was avoiding them well,' said Buemi. 'I saved quite a bit of energy at the beginning and that basically allowed me to take the ATTACK MODE properly. So in the end I'm very happy with that, it's good for the Teams' Championship, and it's good when you have a bad qualifying like that to finish and score some good points.' Jake Dennis of the Andretti Formula E Team crossed the line in fourth, while Jaguar's Mitch Evans was classified fifth after receiving a five-second penalty for speeding under Full Course Yellow conditions — a punishment that dropped him from the second place he had claimed on track. Newly-crowned drivers' world champion Oliver Rowland failed to finish after a collision with Nico Mueller on Lap 16 forced both out of the race. Despite the DNF, Rowland received a hero's reception from the London crowd, having sealed his championship title earlier in Berlin. With Rowland's early exit, Nissan's slim hopes of overtaking Porsche in the Teams' and Manufacturers' standings came to an end. Porsche, who had quietly gathered momentum throughout the season, clinched both the FIA Teams' World Championship and the inaugural FIA Manufacturers' title — their first in Formula E. Jaguar TCS Racing also overtook Nissan to secure second place in both championship standings, closing out a high point in their final race under Barclay's leadership after 127 starts in the all-electric series. Elsewhere, it was a disappointing end to the campaign for NEOM McLaren. Both drivers — Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird — failed to finish the final race after separate incidents. The team concluded the season sixth in the Teams' standings, with Barnard finishing fourth overall on 112 points and Bird eighteenth with 31 points.

McLaren Racing's WEC Hypercar Team Will Be Called 'McLaren United'
The motorsports world's collective eyes are all on France right now for the 93rd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. McLaren Racing is taking advantage of that fact, to announce the details of its plan to join the World Endurance Championship in 2027, including its partnership with United Autosports and its decision to participate under the banner of McLaren United, with James Barclay named as team principal. The brand has not yet made any driver announcements. In 2027, McLaren United will join the WEC field with two entries, No. 95 and No. 59, in honor of the brand's first Le Mans win, which it achieved in its maiden attempt. Rejoining WEC gives McLaren the chance to pull off motorsport's "Triple Crown" — winning WEC's 24 Hours of Le Mans, IndyCar's Indianapolis 500, and Formula 1's Monaco Grand Prix — for a second time. McLaren won their first Indianapolis 500 with Johnny Rutherford in 1974, and its first (of 16) Monaco Grand Prix with Alain Prost in 1984; when McLaren took victory in the 1995 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas, and Masanori Sekiya in 1995, it completed the hat trick. Its LMPh entry will feature a twin-turbo V6 engine designed by McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive, produced and engineered alongside Dallara, with whom the carmaker work closely with on the IndyCar side of McLaren Racing. McLaren Racing CEO Zac Brown says he's confident that the manufacturer's F1 team and IndyCar teams are at a level that they can focus on winning in a third series. "In my mind, these are the three most important championships in the world, in all due respect to the other championships," Brown told journalists at Le Mans. "They are in line with McLaren's history and brand values and what makes sense to us." McLaren announced earlier this year that it would be leaving Formula E as the company's focus shifts towards an endurance championship. An expansion to IMSA, while not off the table, will not be pursued until at earliest 2028. Zac Brown invited James Barclay on as team principal after a long personal history with the leader who brought Jaguar Racing back to success in multiple disciplines, including Formula E and sports car racing. He will join the team in September, following the summer break. "I've known James a long time," Brown told Road & Track. "I'm a big fan of James. I'm the one that brought him in to be the team principal. I think that he has a wealth of knowledge in a variety of motorsports — certainly Le Mans, sports car racing, and having worked for OEMs in the past." "He's hungry, ready for a challenge, having had a lot of success in Formula E. He's a racer, he's commercially minded, so he understands all aspects of what it takes to be successful in racing. When you put all of those ingredients together, I think he's a perfect candidate to run the team for us." Drama club joins in knitted postbox topper craze with VE Day theme ahead of latest show
Riverside Drama Club have come up with a novel way to showcase their latest production - with a knitted postbox topper. The club's next production runs from May 7-9 at Bridge of Allan Parish Church halls. 'Paras Over the Barras' by James Barclay has been especially chosen to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. And some members of the club came up with a special creation to publicise the show in Bridge of Allan. Director George Steele said: 'The play is a WW2 comedy set in the Glasgow Barrowlands. It is of nostalgic belly straight out of your granny's room and to be missed.' A spokesperson added: 'A few of the club's 'crafty' members had a fun idea and have created a crocheted and knitted postbox topper to mark the occasion. 'It is a very intricate and detailed project and took almost four months to complete. 'It even lights up at night! 'The topper was installed on April 2 and can be seen on Fountain Road, Bridge of Allan just outside Strathallan Pharmacy. 'The lovely people of Bridge of Alan gave our members such a wonderfully warm welcome, stopping to chat and take photos. The staff from the pharmacy kindly shared photos of the topper on their local Facebook groups. 'We hope the topper will make people smile and that it will be enjoyed by the community as it was an absolute joy to make.' Postbox toppers have been popping up across the UK - many of them commemorating the 80th anniverary of VE Day. Thursday May 8 marks the 80th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day, the day when the Second World War officially came to an end in Europe. The Stirling Observer wants to know if and how the people of the Stirling area plan to commemorate the occasion, or hear from anyone who has their own memories of that day. Commemorations for the 75th anniversary in 2020 were tailored to the Covid-19 lockdown. But 2025 gives Stirling residents an opportunity to mark the date more fully once again.
