Las Vegas Sphere to screen 'The Wizard of Oz' in the immersive venue's first film experience

The Las Vegas Sphere will soon screen 1939's "The Wizard of Oz" in the immersive event venue's first film experience. The project places viewers inside the world of Oz using the Sphere's 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen. The film will play in 16k resolution with full spatial audio using 167,000 speakers and haptic seating, according to a June press release. In a partnership with Google Cloud, engineers used AI "outpainting" to expand the original film frames to fit the immersive space, according to an April press release. "Our standard on this was not to modify the film at all, but to try and bring you into as if you were in the studio when it was shot," James Dolan, Sphere Entertainment CEO, told CBS Sunday Morning. Glenn Derry, MSG Ventures executive vice president and visual effects artist, is in charge of the 4D effects, such as motion, wind, water and scent, to make audiences feel like they are in Oz, CBS reported. Derry told CBS Sunday Morning his team used technology to bring in fog and wind effects to mimic tornadoes that are seen in the movie. "The Wizard of Oz" experience opens to the public on Aug. 28. The Las Vegas Sphere opened in September 2023 and has a capacity of roughly 20,000. About 10,000 of the seats in the arena have haptic technology, according to Sphere Entertainment. The venue has garnered attention since its opening for impressive live concerts and unique visuals.

‘Wizard of Oz' blown up by AI for giant Sphere screen

The massive Las Vegas venue known as Sphere will be screening its first classic movie, 'The Wizard of Oz,' starting on August 28. And as detailed in a segment on CBS Sunday Morning, this isn't just a matter of taking the existing movie and projecting it on Sphere's 160,000 square foot, wraparound LED screen. Instead, Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan said a 2,000-person team is creating a new experience. That includes using AI to both increase the resolution of the existing film and expand the footage beyond the frame of what was actually shot. For example, Turner Classic Movie presenter Ben Mankiewicz said that through the use of AI, 'a grainy close-up of Dorothy becomes richly detailed, and then through a process called outpainting — though it seems like magic — we see the rest of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the mountains of Oz.' In other cases, expanding the frame means creating new performances from the existing actors. Despite these changes, Dolan said, 'Our standard on this was not to modify the film at all but to try and bring you into the film, as if you were in the studio when it was shot.' New York Knicks owner shut down Kevin Durant trade talks? Stephen A. Smith offers up ‘petty' theory

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith has offered up a wild theory about why the New York Knicks had a change of heart on a Kevin Durant trade. That being, owner James Dolan still holds a years old grudge against the future Hall of Famer. Heading into the offseason, the Knicks were viewed as a serious contender for the services of the 15-time All-Star. Mainly because the organization is known for bold offseason moves, and they reportedly discussed a trade for Durant in February. However, new rumors this week suggested the organization had a recent change of heart. It seems that pivot in interest may have been guided by the team's owner for a 'petty' reason. Advertisement 'When you take in the history that involves Kevin Durant and how James Dolan was led to believe that KD and Kyrie Irving were on their way to the Garden. And they elected to go to Brooklyn, and then when asked about that in the months that followed [Durant] called the Knicks corny and not the happening place,' Smith claimed this week on ESPN's First Take. 'What I'm saying is that residue is where you hear no interest. And you're saying this can't just be about basketball. This has to be about you feeling a bit salty if you're James Dolan. That's where that kind of statement emanates from,' he added. '… This is James Dolan we're talking about, and we know how petty he can be. We know what KD was supposed to do, and ended up not happening. And we know how salty the Knicks were about that, even before Leon Rose arrived.' When Durant became a free agent in the summer of 2019, the loudest rumors suggested he would take his talents to New York. He did, but to the new team in the city, the Brooklyn Nets. Not the New York Knicks. That decision likely stung Dolan more than it should have. Because it happened nearly a decade after he was also supposed to land LeBron James in free agency in 2010. Advertisement While this theory will just add another chapter to Knicks fans' frustration with Dolan, a case could be made that it is the right decision. Durant is going to turn 37 this year and is only signed for 2025-26. The club just made the Eastern Conference Finals. They could be a different coach away from winning it all next season. However, if the front office believes Durant could be the missing piece and Dolan is blocking the move over hurt feelings, it would be just another instance of the Knicks boss cutting off his nose to spite your face. Knicks hire two-time NBA Coach of the Year Brown to guide club

The 55-year-old American went 454-304 as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento. The Kings fired him last December after a 13-18 start. "After a thorough and extensive search process, we are pleased to announce Mike Brown as the head coach of the New York Knicks," Knicks president Leon Rose said. "Mike has coached on the biggest stages in our sport and brings championship pedigree to our organization. "His experience leading the bench during the NBA Finals, winning four titles as an assistant coach and his ability to grow and develop players will all help us as we aim to bring a championship to New York for our fans." The Knicks, who have not won an NBA title since 1973, reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2000, but lost to the Indiana Pacers. That was enough to prompt the Knicks to fire Tom Thibodeau last month after five years as head coach. "Leon and our staff ran a thorough and thoughtful process that led our organization to Mike and I'm pleased to see him on the sideline for us next season," Knicks owner James L. Dolan said. Brown went 107-88 as coach of the Kings for three seasons. In the 2022-23 campaign, his first at Sacramento, Brown's team won 48 games and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2006 as he took the NBA Coach of the Year award, the first to do so by a unanimous vote. After assistant stops at Washington, San Antonio and Indiana -- including a staff role on the 2003 San Antonio NBA title run -- Brown was named coach of the Cavaliers in 2005 and with rising superstar LeBron James. Brown oversaw the Cavs reaching the playoffs for the first time since 1998 and into the 2007 NBA Finals. He was named NBA Coach of the Year for the first time in 2010 after guiding Cleveland to a league-high 66 triumphs. He was fired in May 2010 as the Cavs were set to welcome James back from his stint in Miami. Brown replaced Phil Jackson as coach of the Lakers one year later, only to be fired in November 2012. Brown was rehired by the Cavs in 2013 but fired again after they went 33-49 and missed the playoffs. From 2016-2022, Brown was an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors, who captured three NBA titles during his stay there. In the 2017 playoffs, Brown went 12-0 while coach Steve Kerr was absent during the Warriors' championship run. Brown left for the Kings in 2022.
