Injury-Depleted Diamondbacks Place Ildemaro Vargas on IL, Give James McCann First Start This Season
The injury-depleted Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Blaze Alexander from Triple-A Reno and placed infielder Ildemaro Vargas on the 10-day injured list with a right foot fracture before Wednesday's series final against the Chicago White Sox. Vargas suffered a broken fifth metatarsal when he was hit by a pitch from Mike Vasil in the second inning of Arizona's 4–1 win Tuesday night. He is batting .286 with one home run and four RBIs in 10 games. Catcher James McCann was playing in his first major league game of the season Wednesday, starting behind the plate. The 35-year-old signed with Arizona on Monday following his release from the Atlanta Braves. McCann signed a minor league deal with the Braves on April 8 and was released Sunday. Over 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he hit .297 with six homers and 30 RBIs. McCann, who is in his 12th season in the majors, was selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. That season with the White Sox, he set career highs in hits (120), homers (18), and RBIs (60). He has a .241 career batting average with 92 homers and 373 RBIs in 917 games with the Tigers, White Sox, Mets, and Orioles. 'I'm glad he's here,' manager Torey Lovullo said. 'I've admired him from across the field through a couple of his organizations.' The Diamondbacks remain without center fielder Corbin Carroll. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year went on the injured list retroactive to Saturday with a chip fracture in his left wrist, and a timeline for his return is unknown. Carroll hasn't played since a pitch hit him in the left hand last Wednesday in Toronto. Infielder Eugenio Suarez was still out of the lineup Wednesday after being hit on the hand by a pitch from Shane Smith on Monday. First baseman Josh Naylor returned after injuring his shoulder on a swing Monday and sitting out Tuesday.

Diamondbacks sign James McCann to 1-year deal
Arizona signed James McCann to a major league contract following his release from the Atlanta Braves, and the 35-year-old catcher joined the Diamondbacks for their game against the Chicago White Sox. Arizona also designated catcher Aramis Garcia for assignment. McCann agreed to a one-year contract for the $760,000 minimum while in the major leagues and $180,000 while in the minors. With 99 days remaining in the season, McCann would receive $404,516 should he remain in the majors the rest of the way. He signed a minor league deal with the Braves on April 8 and was released, which allowed him to sign with Arizona. Over 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he hit .297 with six homers and 30 RBIs. A second-round draft pick in 2011 by Detroit, McCann has played 11 seasons in the majors with the Tigers (2014-18), White Sox (2019-20), Mets (2021-22) and Orioles (2023-24). He has batted .241 over his career with 92 homers and 373 RBIs. McCann was selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. That season with the White Sox, he set career highs in hits (120), homers (18) and RBIs (60).

Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll (left wrist fracture) to go on IL
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters after Monday night's 10-0 win over the Chicago White Sox that outfielder Corbin Carroll has a chip fracture in his left wrist, an injury that's expected to put the 24-year-old on the injured list. Lovullo said a timeframe for Carroll would not be known until the team gets additional medical opinions. Carroll last Wednesday was struck in the hand by a 91 mph sinker from Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Justin Bruihl. Initial X-rays were negative, but tests Monday revealed the fracture. 'That's a little bit confusing to all of us,'' Lovullo said. 'It's on the back of his hand, the impact of the ball hit the side of his hand. It just goes to show you how hard these guys are throwing today.' It's the latest setback for the Diamondbacks, who have battled injuries all season. Already, the club has lost right-hander Corbin Burnes, along with top relief pitchers Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk, to season-ending elbow injuries. Advertisement Last week, catcher Gabriel Moreno was placed on the 10-day IL with a right-hand contusion. To help, the Diamondbacks on Monday signed 35-year-old catcher James McCann, an 11-year veteran and one-time All-Star who had spent most of this season with the Gwinnett Stripers, the Triple A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Prior to his injury, Carroll was hitting .255/.341/.573 with 20 home runs and 44 RBI. He is sixth among outfielders in the latest National League All-Star voting.
