Former Michigan State golfer James Piot finishes at T73 in Rocket Classic shooting -7
Former Michigan State golfer and 2021 US Amateur champion James Piot played in his hometown's PGA Tour event at the Rocket Classic in Detroit, going to the Detroit Golf Club and making history by competing in the PGA Tour following a stint in LIV. For Piot, a Canton (MI) native, he made his first career cut on the PGA Tour, getting in on the six-under number. After an even par third round, Piot came out on Sunday and fired a 71 (-1) round, making him a clean seven-under for the tournament, which notches him a finish at T73 for the tournament. The T73 finish on the leaderboard comes with a $19,000 payout in earnings, the first payout for Piot on the PGA Tour. With the complications between his transition from LIV back to the PGA, it is unclear when he will be given the opportunity to make another start on the PGA Tour. Former LIV golfer in field at PGA Tour's Rocket Classic
The post Former LIV golfer in field at PGA Tour's Rocket Classic appeared first on ClutchPoints. The PGA Tour is coming off yet another thrilling finish, as Keegan Bradley pulled out a wild victory at the Travelers Championship. He won't have much time to soak it in, though, as the 39-year-old Bradley is in the field at this week's Rocket Classic at the Detroit Golf Club. Interestingly, he will be joined by a former member of LIV Golf as well. Advertisement James Piot, who spent two years on the PGA Tour's rival circuit, has received an unrestricted sponsor's exemption, per GolfWeek. That coincides with several last-minute withdrawals from the PGA Tour event. Eric Cole, Kevin Yu, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and Tim Widing have each pulled out of the event. For Piot, it is a return that started his career. After winning the U.S. Amateur in 2021, Piot joined the Tour. Yet, he struggled mightily to gain any traction at the professional level, missing his final six cuts in a row. That prompted the decision for now 26-year-old, to join LIV Golf. Piot took part in the Saudi-funded league upon its inception in 2022. He spent two seasons as a part of Phil Mickelson's HyFlyers squad. Yet, the talented youngster was unable to jump-start his career there, either. He was relegated after his second season. Advertisement Since that time, Piot has undergone shoulder surgery. After healing up, the former Michigan State Spartan has mostly played the Asian Tour. He also played in one Korn Ferry Tour event, missing the cut there as well. It will be interesting to see how he performs this week vs. a pretty strong PGA Tour field. Even though World No.1 Scottie Scheffler will not be there, several Tour stars are in Detroit. That includes Collin Morikawa, the aforementioned Keegan Bradley, Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, and 2023 Rocket champion Rickie Fowler. Former Spartan James Piot fires an even par third round at the Rocket Classic
The Rocket Classic in Detroit has continued on to the weekend, with players vying for their spots on the leaderboard. After the cut was made on Friday, Detroit Golf Club welcomed golfers in for the third round on Saturday, otherwise known as 'moving day' on the PGA Tour. Of the three former Spartans competing in Detroit's PGA Tour event, only one made the weekend, with James Piot making the cut on the six-under number. On Saturday, Piot was looking to make a move up the leaderboard, but he unfortunately was unable to do so. A two birdie, two bogey day led to a 36-36-72 round for the former Spartan, shooting an even par round. He now sits at T73 on the leaderboard for the tournament. Sunday's fourth and final round will be Piot's last chance to make a move upwards on the leaderboard. He will tee off at 7:34 a.m. in a grouping alongside Ben Kohles. Former Spartan golfer making history on the PGA Tour at the Rocket Classic
Former Michigan State golfer James Piot has made a return to the PGA Tour, playing in his hometown event at the Rocket Classic in Detroit at the Detroit Golf Club this weekend. With his return to the tour, he is also making history. After winning the US Amateur championship, Piot began his pro career, but instead of beginning it within in the PGA Tour, he chose to go to the LIV Golf Tour. Piot spent two years on the LIV tour, but is now back, looking to make a return to the PGA Tour. Unfortunately, due to his involvement with LIV, Piot was suspended from the PGA Tour. Now, Piot may have found the pathway for LIV golfers returning the PGA Tour. Piot was given a sponsors exemption into the PGA Tour event in Detroit, allowing him to play in the field this week. He is officially the first player from LIV to receive a sponsor's exemption on the PGA Tour, making history between the two tours. It will be very interesting to see where this leads with the ongoing relationship between the PGA Tour and LIV. One thing is for sure, though, a former Spartan is one to make history between the tours.
