Columbus project makes city's neighborhoods more ADA accessible

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)– While many curb ramps around Columbus are compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), some are not, and the city is working to fix that. The work is included in the city's 2025 ADA Curb Ramp Project. The project lists 239 ramps at about 70 intersections to be worked on, according to the Columbus Department of Public Service (DPS). One of the intersections the city plans to work on is Dennison Avenue and West Sixth Avenue. Increasing accessibility at Ohio State Fair 'We were talking about cuts that don't meet current standards, this would be one, and that would be one,' resident Chuck Fairbanks said as he pointed out some issues at that intersection in the University District. Fairbanks has lived in the area for decades and been a wheelchair user since the late 1970s, so he knows the sidewalks and curb ramps to the streets well. He said the city's made a lot of progress since he was in college. 'Currently, we're doing pretty well, I think, with a few exceptions, but I can only think of two or three places where there's not a cut where there should be,' he said. But there is still work to be done. Ramps are required to be a certain width and have a specified slope. They also need to have what DPS deputy director James Young referred to as detectable warnings. At many intersections, that is a red mat with bumps in a grid-like pattern. Several spots in Fairbanks' neighborhood do not have those. 'We have about 56,000 ramps in the city, so it doesn't sound like we're making improvements, but a lot of them are compliant; we are making gradual increases and improvements in the system,' Young said. Ohio House overrides one budget veto, hoping to provide property tax relief The 2025 project will cost around $1.2 million. 'We want to make sure people have the means to get around their neighborhood, so a lot of times when we're going through, it's literally how do you get to places you need to be, and having that ramp in there makes it just easier to access your neighborhood,' Young said. The work on this year's project is expected to start in the fall, according to DPS. Young said the department usually decides where to do the work based on 311 requests and employees noticing problems. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Old Young's Kitchen owner James Young closes restaurant to focus on becoming ‘world-class distillery'

The owner of the renowned Old Young's Kitchen has revealed the reason behind the restaurant's sudden closure after his unexpected announcement on Wednesday. James Young opened the Swan Valley restaurant three and a half years ago, and in such a short time it has become beloved by locals and visitors alike. Known for it's in-house alcohol, extravagant cocktails and a menu filled with locally sourced produce, customers were shocked to hear the restaurant will be shutting its doors next month. Owner Mr Young said at its core, the business is a distillery with a restaurant, not visa versa, and the closure will allow him to focus more on the distillery. 'We are so proud of everything we have achieved at Old Young's Kitchen since opening in the heart of COVID back in December 2021,' he said. 'This decision was obviously a big call for us, and while we are incredibly proud of the success of the business to date, we decided to go out on a high. 'Running a top-quality hospitality business takes a laser focus that we want and need to apply to building a world-class distillery' While the restaurant opened just a few years ago, Old Young's Distillery has been operating since 2016 and has flourished, picking up two global recognition of Craft Producer and Brand Innovator of the year in 2023 at the Icons of Gin awards. The laser focus requirement of running a restaurant became too much for the team, who are now dialling it back to put all their efforts in their world renowned gin. 'I'd like to thank everyone who has worked with us over this time propelling us to 2 stars and a nomination for WA Restaurant of the Year from the WA Good Food Guide and a listing in the Top 10 Regional Restaurants in Australia,' Mr Young said. 'Our head chefs, Rohan Park and Paul Greenham and their kitchen teams have served up stunning food, our front of house staff have elevated the level of hospitality in the Valley and I'd also like to single out our head bartender, Pat Torres who has been the genius behind our cocktail lists. 'A restaurant is nothing without customers and we would like to thank the over 90,000 people who has come through the door and been brave enough to try crocodile chorizo, emu pastrami or kangaroo tartare, while sipping on a Swan Valley wine, beer or an Old Young's cocktail. 'While we know our customers will be sad to hear our regular service will be finishing up in six weeks, we are hoping to welcome as many of them as possible back for a final lunch and cocktail or two.' Although it's not a final goodbye for the venue shrouded in vines, as they will still host booked functions and planned weddings going forward.

AC/DC fans in High Voltage frenzy ahead of Aussie tour

Aussie fans are thunderstruck after hearing the news rock legends AC/DC are gearing up for a long-awaited homecoming tour. It's the first time in a decade the band will light up stadiums across the nation, and excitement is spilling over from fans' social media pages to venues like Melbourne's Cherry Bar. Bar owner James Young says the nightspot, which spent two decades on ACDC Lane before recently relocating, was where the band received its gold records for the hit tracks TNT and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap in 1976. Mr Young has seen the legendary band 17 times and is thrilled the Power Up tour is finally coming home. "You shouldn't die without having seen AC/DC," he told AAP. Original band member Angus Young will lead the charge, joined by longstanding vocalist Brian Johnson, Stevie Young on rhythm guitar, drummer Matt Laug, and bassist Chris Chaney. It will be a busy end to 2025 for music fans, with reunited rock band Oasis and Metallica also playing shows across Australia from October. Mr Young has already booked what he calls the best tribute band for that weekend. "It's just going to be absolutely bonkers," he said. Joining the tour will be special guests Amyl and the Sniffers, the Australian rock band that's had a stand-out year, taking home Song of the Year at the 2025 APRA Music Awards. The tour has even caught the attention of the City of Melbourne. It has hinted AC/DC might recreate the famous It's a Long Way to the Top music video - showing the band performing on the back of a truck on Swanston Street - either later this year or as part of the video's 50th anniversary in 2026. "Melbourne is a live music capital of the world. Recreating this iconic moment on Swanston Street will be unforgettable," Lord Mayor Nick Reece said. It won't be easy for concertgoers though, with Ticketek issuing a warning ahead of the highly anticipated sale, advising fans to be up bright and early to join its virtual queue if they hope to secure tickets. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday at staggered local times, with Sydney from 9am followed by Brisbane at 11am, Melbourne at 1pm and Perth at 1pm (AWST). To improve their chances, the company shared several tips: use only one device and one browser to access the sale, avoid refreshing your browser while in the queue, and be ready to check out quickly. Ticketek urged customers to only purchase tickets from its website and warned against buying from third-party resellers. The tour opens at Melbourne's MCG on November 12 before heading to Sydney on November 21, Adelaide on November 30, Perth on December 4 and Brisbane on December 14.
