My Dad Wrote A Porno creators share first date horror stories and offer advice on launching your next creative project on new Mail podcast

Podcasting royalty Jamie Morton and James Cooper, creators of My Dad Wrote A Porno, shared their advice for launching your next creative project on the latest The Life of Bryony podcast. The duo also discussed first date disasters while celebrating the launch of their new musical - a show that transforms a cringe-worthy dating story into an empowering romcom. The friends met as students at Leeds University, never imagining their lives would be transformed when Jamie's retired father took up writing erotic fiction. They transformed Jamie's father's amateur novel into an award-winning podcast that helped ignite the UK's podcasting craze. 'It was the most stupidly simple thing', Jamie told Mail columnist Bryony Gordon. 'My dad – who is insane – wrote a porno. He was a builder from Northern Ireland, and he wanted to do something in his retirement, not just sit around. 'He decided to write a novel, and I was really proud of him - until I read it. The first line involved a woman taking her bra off in a job interview. Listen to The Life of Bryony podcast Ever feel like everyone else has it together while you're barely hanging on? 'It was the worst book ever written, but the most hilarious. He didn't know how to write about sex or anything else really. 'He sent it to me, and it became my party piece – reading bits of the book out loud. Me and James decided to record it and then it just became this massive thing.' The pair started the podcast from their kitchen without proper equipment, recording through their phone's microphone. Intrigued by their humble beginnings, host Bryony asked the duo for advice on turning creative ideas into reality. 'Always start where you are,' James said. 'What resources do you have to hand already? What are your friends that you could start working with? 'Don't be too ambitious – start practically and small. You can build from there and that way, it's more likely to happen. That's how we have always done it.' The pair have reunited for a new musical called Love Struck, which is running at the Stratford East theatre in 2025. Love Struck draws inspiration from a viral 2019 story about a woman getting stuck in a toilet window during a first date, transforming it into a modern love story. While discussing the pitfalls of dating today, Jamie and James shared stories of first date disasters. Jamie said: 'My mate told me the other day that he was on a first date and had lit all these candles. 'That's quite sweet in a way, but it was loads of candles and he started sweating profusely. 'He was sweating so much that he slipped and fell into hot wax in front of his date.'

Lovestuck review – superb dating disaster musical inspired by unfortunate toilet accident

As bad dating stories go, this one from 2017 is a classic. During a Tinder date, a woman found herself in a pretty awkward situation: her poo wouldn't flush, and in an attempt to discreetly dispose of it, she ended up wedged between two windows. The story was turned into a viral meme, and even made the headlines. Now, a musical by two of the creators of the hit podcast My Dad Wrote a Porno (Jamie Morton and James Cooper) has been spawned from the incident, too. The central premise remains, but with a few creative tweaks. Lucy and Peter have been raised on Disney movies but are chronically unlucky in love. Misguided help arrives in the form of Lucy's cutting anti-guardian-angel, Miseraie, and Peter's insufferable finance bro flatmate, David. After matching on a dating app, they meet at a Mexican restaurant and do their best to keep up appearances. But, would you believe it – it turns out they might just be each other's perfect match after all. With Alison Steadman's voice guiding us through the show as a romcom style narrator, everything falls, predictably, into place. But with a powerhouse score by Bryn Christopher and Martin Batchelar, the stage erupts into a celebration of modern love at its most mortifying. In Picture Perfect, Lucy sings of the flawless lives she sees online. In Shit!, her embarrassment spills out of her at a panicked rate. Every number is a hit. After the original actor playing Lucy suffered an injury in rehearsals last week, Ambra Caserotti has stepped in last minute. Though you'd never guess it: her voice melts like butter, and she brings a dry sense of humour to the role. Coupled with Shane O'Riordan as Peter, the pair make an endearing and suitable awkwardly match. By the end, it turns out it's better to be yourself, even if you happen to be the internet sensation known as 'poo girl'. It's hardly revolutionary stuff. But with stylistic traces of Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss's Why Am I So Single?, the musical glistens with wit, intelligence and a high gag rate. There's a hell of a lot of poo chat, but if you can get onboard the toilet train, you're sure to leave laughing. At Stratford East, London, until 12 July
