Florida football loses three-star defensive line commit to Ohio State
The Florida Gators lost a defensive line commitment this week as Jamir Perez, a three-star recruit out of Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, announced he's decommitting from Florida and flipping to Ohio State, according to a report from Hayes Fawcett of Rivals. Perez, listed at 6-foot-4-inches and 330 pounds, initially pledged to Billy Napier's program on May 18, capping his official visit to Gainesville by telling Florida football coaches he was ready to make Florida home. "For me, see, I'm from Ohio," Perez previously told Gators Online's Blake Alderman. "I had Ohio State and being an Ohio kid, that's usually the dream, but I always dreamed of playing in the SEC. I feel like I'm an SEC type of body, I'm an SEC type of player. Florida just made it home." His connection with defensive line coach Gerald Chatman was key to Florida landing his early commitment. But just two weeks later, Perez locked in an official visit with Ohio State–a trip that ultimately shifted the momentum back to Columbus. That visit, which took place June 13-15, was reportedly when confidence spiked that the Buckeyes would flip him. The impact for Florida is minimal. The Gators recently secured a commitment from Kendall Guervil, a four-star defensive lineman out of Fort Myers. While losing an Ohio native to the in-state Buckeyes isn't necessarily a shock, it's another reminder that the recruiting battle in the trenches never stops–especially for a Florida staff trying to stack SEC-caliber depth. Florida Gator recruit now crystal balled to flip to his commitment to Ohio State
In what was an unexpected turn of events back in May, defensive lineman Jamir Perez chose to give his verbal commitment to Florida over Ohio State. The three-star lineman from Cleveland was crystal balled to land with the Buckeyes, but ended up picking the Gators. It was somewhat surprising considering Perez hails from Glenville High School, which has notoriously been a pipeline for OSU. It seems all hope is not lost on Perez, and he may end up in Columbus after all. There has been a fair amount of smoke surrounding the young man's commitment that suggests he may not be sold on playing in Gainesville. It was originally thought that Perez would pick Ohio State, and now there have been several crystal ball predictions that say he'll flip his pledge from the Gators to the Buckeyes, the latest coming from Nick Osen of 247Sports. Perez himself posted on social media that there is a "Big announcement Friday!" It may not seem like that big of a deal to get a three-star recruit to flip, but Ryan Day has been adamant about building a fence around Ohio and keeping the best players in state. For the most part he's been successful at doing just that. Not to mention, Perez has the size at 6-foot-4 and 360 pounds to be the kind of space eater the Bucks need on the defensive line. We'll find out on Friday if the big news is indeed Perez flipping his commitment to the Buckeyes. It is also worth noting that Perez is the high school teammate of Cincere Johnson, a four-star linebacker and top-100 player in the country who recently committed to Ohio State.
