Anderlecht in talks with Deportivo Alaves for Malian defender
HLN are reporting that Anderlecht are in discussions with La Liga side Deportivo Alaves for 24-year-old Malian central defender Moussa Diarra. The former Toulouse man was the subject of a bid from the Mauves of around €2.5m, yet the Spanish side are hoping to get in the region of €4m. Anderlecht could certainly do with more central defensive cover, and with Diarra being left footed he would be able to replace the retiring Jan Vertonghen. Diarra only joined the Spanish side last summer and went on to make 27 appearances across La Liga nad the Copa del Rey. The side finished the season in 15th place. Prior to his Spanish adventure, Diarra had been part of the Toulouse set up, making his senior debut during the 2019/2020 season. He was part of the promotion winning side of 2021/2022, making 30 appearances that season. All in all, Diarra played 109 games for Toulouse, scoring once. He is also a full Malian international. Former Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen to retire at end of the season
BRUSSELS (AP) — Former Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen will retire from all soccer at the end of the season. The 37-year-old Vertonghen, a former Tottenham player who holds the record for the most appearances (157) with Belgium, had already retired from international soccer after the 2024 European Championship. 'In recent weeks it has become clear to me that these will be my last games," the Anderlecht captain said Tuesday. 'This is by no means an easy decision, but it is the right one. I have noticed that it is becoming more and more difficult to prepare myself physically for training sessions and matches and to show myself as the player I want to be. Not only towards the fans and my fellow players, but also towards myself. That is why I will be stopping after this season.' Vertonghen also played for Ajax and Benfica in a career spanning more than 18 years. He played for Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League final — won by Liverpool — and was part of Belgium's so-called Golden Generation, helping his country to qualify for three consecutive World Cups. Belgium finished third at the 2018 tournament in Russia. Anderlecht finished the regular season in fourth place and qualified for the title playoffs. Anderlecht will also play in the Belgian Cup final against Club Brugge. Anderlecht captain Jan Vertonghen, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, has confirmed he is retiring from playing at the end of the 2024-25 season. Vertonghen made 315 appearances for Spurs between 2012 and 2020, helping the club reach the Champions League final in 2019. The 37-year-old retired from international football last year, having made a national record 157 senior appearances for Belgium across 17 years. Advertisement The defender has played for Anderlecht in his native Belgium since leaving Benfica in 2022, but has made just five first-team appearances this campaign due to injury. 'I have noticed that it is becoming more and more difficult to prepare myself physically for training sessions and matches and to show myself as the player I want to be,' Vertonghen said on Tuesday. 'Not only towards the fans and my fellow players, but also towards myself. That is why I will be stopping after this season.' Vertonghen won the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup twice with Ajax before joining Spurs, and after leaving the north London club — where twice being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year — the centre-back won the Portuguese league title with Benfica.
