JSK – Janaki v/s State of Kerala row: High Court judge watches controversial movie at Kochi film studio

Kerala High Court judge N. Nagaresh arrived at a private film studio at Padamugal near Kakkanad in Kochi, Kerala, on Saturday (July 5, 2025) to watch the Malayalam film JSK – Janaki v/s State of Kerala starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi amidst the demand by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to change the movie title as well as the name of the titular character of Janaki, apparently because the name also refers to the Hindu goddess Sita. The court, which is considering a petition by the film's production company Cosmos Entertainments seeking a directive to the CBFC to issue the censor certificate, had stated on July 2 that it was appropriate to watch the movie before arriving at a decision. The production company had also requested the court to watch the film. The court had earlier termed the CBFC's revising committee seeking a change of the name 'Janaki' in the title and of the protagonist 'a challenge to the freedom of creative expression.' Justifying the demand for the change of name, the board's counsel had contended that the character Janaki in the film is sexually assaulted. To this, the counsel for the petitioner argued that the character Janaki who is portrayed in the film is 'a fighter for justice.' He said the CBFC had not cited any problem with 'Janaki' in the title earlier this year when its trailer was released. 'The same board had also issued a censor certificate to a film by name 'Janaki Jaane',' he pointed out. The court observed that 'the character is a victim who is fighting for justice, and is not an accused. Moreover, In India, a good share of names are either of gods and goddesses or have similarities with their names,' it said. The case has been posted for hearing on July 9.

Janaki vs State of Kerala: Kerala High Court set to review film as makers says ‘cannot change name at this stage'

After the makers of Janaki vs State of Kerala moved the Kerala High Court to oppose the title change demanded by CBFC, the court is set to watch the film on July 5. The screening of the film will be held at Lal Media in Palarivattom, Kochi. The decision was made after the film's production company, Cosmos Entertainments, petitioned for the court's review. In June, CBFC objected to the use of Janaki in the film's title and said that the movie's lead, a rape survivor, cannot be named after Goddess Sita. Justice N Nagaresh, who will watch the film alongside representatives from both the petitioner and the CBFC, told The Hindu, 'Considering the allegations in the petitions, I believe it is appropriate to watch the movie before arriving at a decision.' In their petition, the makers of the film said, 'We accept that Janaki is also another name for goddess Sita, but it's such a common name used in many parts of the country. Through our movie, we never tried to defame Goddess Sita or any other belief system reluctant in our country.' The makers further shared that they are in the final stage of production and to rename the character at this stage is difficult for us. The petitioner's counsel also highlighted that the same CBFC has issued a certificate to a film titled Janaki Jaane. Joy Mathew, member of the ad hoc committee, AMMA said, 'What a joke! Most of the people, films in our country and even the government give name from our itihas and traditions. Then why should CBFC say this? They always want to change most of the dialogues mentioning Janaki. It looks like matter of ego, otherwise there is no reason for them to do it because most of the films carry names like Sita, Ram, Mohammad, George and so on.' Directed by Pravin Narayanan, Janaki vs State of Kerala stars Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran in the lead roles.

JSK – Janaki Vs State of Kerala row: Kerala High Court to watch film on July 5

The Kerala High Court is set to watch the Malayalam film JSK – Janaki Vs State of Kerala starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi, for which the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not issued censor certificate yet, on Saturday (July 7, 2025). The court said it would first watch the movie before passing any orders. Justice N. Nagaresh will watch the movie at 10 a.m. at Lal Media, Palarivattom. The film's production company Cosmos Entertainments, which is the petitioner, had requested that the court watch the film. Justice N. Nagaresh stated that a representative of both the petitioner and the CBFC, or their counsel, be present during the screening. 'Considering the allegations in the petitions, I believe it is appropriate to watch the movie before arriving at a decision,' he added. The court had on Monday termed the CBFC's revising committee seeking a change of the name 'Janaki' in the title and of the protagonist 'a challenge to the freedom of creative expression.' Justifying the demand for the change of name, the board's counsel had contended that the character Janaki in the film is sexually assaulted. To this, the counsel for the petitioner argued that the character Janaki who is portrayed in the film is 'a fighter for justice.' He said the CBFC had not cited any problem with 'Janaki' in the title earlier this year when its trailer was released. 'The same board had also issued a censor certificate to a film by name 'Janaki Jaane,' he pointed out. The court observed that 'the character is a victim who is fighting for justice, and is not an accused. Moreover, In India, a good share of names are either of gods and goddesses or have similarities with their names.' The case has been posted for hearing on July 8.

Isn't demand for change of name of film a challenge to freedom of creative expression, asks HC

The Kerala High Court has asked whether the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) revising committee seeking the change of name Janaki in the title of Malayalam feature film JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala isn't a challenge to the freedom of creative expression. The committee had in addition sought the change of the same name by which the protagonist was being referred to in the film and in dialogues. Stating that the demand for change of name was not justifiable, the court sought the precise reason for which the CBFC raised the demand and posted the case for hearing on Wednesday. 'In India, a good share of names are either of gods and goddesses or have similarities with their names,' the court said. Counsel for the film's producer firm, which filed the petition, said the CBFC had not cited any problem with 'Janaki' in the title earlier this year, when its trailer was released. The same board had issued censor certificate for a film by name Janaki Jaane. Board's counsel said the character Janaki in the film JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala was being sexually assaulted and hence the demand for change of name. Moreover, there was a norm that films must not have adverse references to religion or caste. To this, counsel for the petitioner firm contended that the character Janaki portrayed in the film was a fighter for justice. The court observed that the character was a victim who was fighting for justice, and not an accused. The petitioner firm added that an appellate tribunal, where appeals regarding censor certificate could be taken up, was dismantled in 2021 and there was no other forum but the court to pursue the matter. Stating that films bearing similar names had been released earlier, the High Court had on Friday asked the CBFC why censor certificate had not been issued for the film (that stars among others, Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi).
