Pawan Kalyan Says He Wanted To Quit Films In 2006: ‘The Problem With Me Is...'

Last Updated: Pawan Kalyan says that going forth, he wants to become a full-time politician and remain in the movies only as a producer. He now intends to 'activate' his production house. Much conversation is happening regarding superstar and Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Pawan Kalyan's retirement plans from the world of cinema. In fact, he was semi-retired from the movies when producer AM Rathnam approached him to play the protagonist in Hari Hara Veera Mallu, which is set to release in theatres today. For the unversed, in March 2014, Kalyan founded the Janasena Party and and then he continued his political career alongside his film career as an actor. Now, Kalyan exclusively tells News18 Showsha that he indeed plans on taking a complete retirement from the movies and focus solely on helping the society as a politician. Talking about how his plans of retirement had occurred to him as early as 2006, he says, 'I'll definitely retire. I would love to retire. I never thought that I would continue to do films for this long. By 2006-2007, I wanted to quit films. I had actually thought that I'll direct five films and then quit the industry." However, the commercial failure of his debut directorial that released in 2003 derailed his plans. 'If my first film as a director, Johnny, wouldn't have performed at the box office the way I wanted it to, I would've directed four more films, quit cinema, venture into politics and keep serving the society. I always wanted to quit cinema but the problem with me is, I didn't plan any alternate financial source. That's the only reason I had to continue doing films till now," Kalyan remarks. Going forward, he wants to finish his acting commitments and then become a full-time politician and remain a part of the movies only as a producer. The actor has already wrapped OG and Ustaad Bhagat Singh and only has Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 2 remaining. 'I may not do more films as an actor but I want to definitely do film production. I've a production house. I never activated it but I think that now is the time. I haven't signed anything else after OG and Ustaad Bhagat Singh. I've finished all the films," he says. Spilling the beans on the second part of his latest release, Kalyan tells us, 'I've to just give a few more days for part two and then I'll be done. Part 2 will happen soon. It has to happen. Around 20 percent of the second part of the film has already been shot. After that, I can dedicate more time for my career as a politician. Even after the shoot of Hari Hara Veera Mallu began, I had to invest more time as a politician and my film career took a backseat." As for Hari Hara Veera Mallu, he's relieved that the film is finally out. 'It took five years for the film to finish. It gives me a sense of great relief. It feels like a weight has been taken off my chest. If my film will be shelved or even get made – I had those fears without a doubt. The burden of finance truly brings down a film," he says. It also stars Bobby Deol and Nidhhi Agerwal. First Published: July 24, 2025, 04:52 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Exclusive: Pawan Kalyan says neither ‘Hindutva hero' nor ‘power star' defines him

Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan said that he is equally at ease both in his political role and as an actor, and that neither persona — be it the 'Hindutva hero' nor 'power star' — fully defines him. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Kalyan spoke about his upcoming film 'Harihara Veera Mallu', his political ideology, his cultural roots, and the way he sees his identity reflected in both cinema and don't consider myself either as a Hindutva hero or as a power star,' he said. 'Whatever comes my way, I try to give my best. I'm comfortable as a leader, I'm comfortable as a Deputy Chief Minister... Whatever the situation demands out of me, I give my 100%.'Kalyan's latest Telugu film 'Harihara Veera Mallu' features him as a warrior tasked with retrieving the Kohinoor diamond from Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. While Aurangzeb is the antagonist, Kalyan maintains that the film is a work of fiction inspired by historical elements. 'It is a fictitious story... about a character called Harihara Veeramallu, who goes all the way to Delhi to bring back Kohinoor. It is a rivalry between Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah and Aurangzeb,' he explained. When asked if his portrayal of Mughal rulers as villains aligned with a political narrative or popular box office formula, Kalyan said any resemblance was coincidental. 'This plot was conceived by the scriptwriter-director Krish Jagarlamudi around 2018. We didn't even have a BJP alliance then,' he said. He added that it was not about recent developments or ideology, but a story that had been in the works for years, centred on the historical Kohinoor diamond which was found in Kollur Mine in the Golconda region, which is now in Andhra Pradesh. Still, Kalyan asserted the need for a more balanced view of history. 'Definitely we should look at the Mughals more objectively,' he said, recalling how school textbooks focused heavily on the 'pious' side of Aurangzeb but omitted his repressive policies, including the jizya tax imposed on non-Muslims. 'They could have presented both good and bad... not just one side.'Asked about his Janasena Party's future in Tamil Nadu, where he has made several recent visits, Kalyan said he is not in a hurry to expand for political gain. 'To develop a party takes a long time and deep commitment,' he said. 'For me, my party should advance interests for cultural and national integration, not just to grab power.'Kalyan also reflected on his ideological journey — from admiring leftist figures like Che Guevara and Fidel Castro to supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said he was shaped by a socialist family background where devotion and social justice coexisted. 'My father was a member of the Communist Party, but he was also a devotee of Lord Rama,' he said. 'Social justice and devotion go hand in hand.'When asked who his real hero was — Narendra Modi or Che Guevara — Kalyan responded: 'I like both. I respect them.' He added, 'This country needs a very strong leader that quality I found in Narendra Modi.'advertisementFinally, reflecting on the challenge of juggling cinema and public service, Kalyan admitted it is difficult. 'I struggle to shift from political seriousness to acting. I often ask myself whether I should continue acting,' he said, adding that financial considerations drive his decision to keep making films. 'If I had enough income, I wouldn't do films. Politics is my real passion and national service.'For Kalyan, the boundaries between actor and leader blur not out of design, but from his effort to remain authentic. Whether as a fighter on-screen or a policymaker off-screen, he says he simply does what he feels 'needs to be done'.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Andhra Pradesh

Pawan Kalyan orders theatre reforms, seeks regulation of ticket and food prices in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan has directed officials to ensure systematic theatre management and regulate food, beverage, and ticket prices across the state. Pawan on Tuesday said producers must seek ticket price hikes through the Telugu Film Chamber (TFC), not individually, including for his film Hari Hara Veera Mallu, which is scheduled for release on June 12. (Also Read | Telugu film industry doesn't have 'minimum respect or gratitude towards Andhra Pradesh govt', says Pawan Kalyan) "The government departments must perform their duties diligently, ensuring fair practices in pricing and operations," Pawan said in a post on X, according to a briefing by Cinematography Minister K Durgesh. He raised concerns over overpriced popcorn, drinks, and bottled water, and instructed officials to monitor pricing and quality standards, initiating inquiries where necessary. He said that the government has taken note of monopolistic practices in multiplexes and single-screen theatres and has ordered a detailed investigation, along with appropriate corrective steps. Families should not avoid theatres due to high refreshment prices, Pawan said, adding that reduced prices could increase audience turnout and enhance tax revenues. The actor-turned-politician insisted on clean drinking water and hygiene in theatres, calling it the basic responsibility of theatre owners, with oversight from local municipal authorities. Regarding theatre shutdowns, he demanded a probe into the alleged involvement of political figures, including those from the Janasena Party, and emphasised that no one should be spared. Pawan also stressed that suggestions for developing the film industry should be gathered from associations and bodies within the Telugu film fraternity for inclusion in the comprehensive film development policy being formulated by the Andhra Pradesh government.
