BBC 'masterpiece' period drama based on 'greatest book of all time' leaves viewers speechless

The BBC period drama is based on a very famous novel and has a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. A BBC TV adaptation of a very famous novel has caught the attention of impressed viewers who have branded it a "true masterpiece". There have been several adaptations of Charlotte Brontë's famous 1847 novel Jane Eyre, but one in particular has left fans raving. ‌ The BBC's adaptation of Jane Eyre follows the early life of the titular character, who is raised as a poor relation in the household of her aunt, Mrs. Reed. Jane receives cruel treatment from her aunt and cousins and is put into an orphanage. ‌ When she is old enough to work, she is hired by the housekeeper of Thornfield Hall, Mrs. Fairfax, to be a governess for young Adèle (Cosima Littlewood) at the country estate. However, when she becomes entangled with the brooding master of Thornfield Hall, Edward Fairfax Rochester, his dark past threatens to destroy their relationship. ‌ The four-episode show, which hit screens in 2006, is directed by Susanna White and written by Sandy Welch, the Express reports. Ruth Wilson stars as Jane while Toby Stephens portrays Edward. The cast also features Lorraine Ashbourne, Pam Ferris and Andrew Buchan. ‌ The BBC series was a hit with fans and dominated the 2007 award season, scooping up a BAFTA and three Primetime Emmy Awards. Jane Eyre currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is based on Charlotte Brontë's book, which is widely considered to be one of the greatest novels of all time. Praising Brontë's work online, one wrote: "Everyone should be a fan of Jane Eyre, it's the greatest novel ever." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! It is now my favorite. If you're thinking of reading it, do not hesitate and read it immediately because you'll regret the moments you spent without reading this masterpiece!" A third chimed in: "This is easily a five star book for me. I love the way that this is written— beautiful, descriptive, and brilliant. ‌ "Some may take the descriptive aspect as a weakness, but for me, it was an important addition to the emotional impact of the book. Story wise, I have no words. The angst of the plot will keep you going." Someone else wrote: "Jane Eyre (greatest novel of all time IMO". A fifth penned: "Marvellous!!! It really was and still is one of the best novels of all time." ‌ The series has also received similar levels of praise with one viewer declaring: "Okay but the 2006 BBC masterpiece Jane Eyre is…… I don't know, a perfect series." A second said: "I highly recommend Jane Eyre from 2006 or 2007 with Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson, a true masterpiece." Another impressed fan questioned: "Is there a show out there that can possibly contend with the BBC 's 2006 miniseries masterpiece Jane Eyre? unlikely." ‌ Someone else commented: "This is the most beautiful adaptation of Jane Eyre. The acting is all round superb. "Eyre and Rochester are full of soul, something lacking in other depictions that only focus on the seriousness of the characters, often failing to portray their passion." Expressing their admiration for the show, a fifth added: "This show did not need to be this well done. They could've left it to be like other book tv show adaptations… yet they delivered!!! "They understood the assignment and did the extra credit!! They knew it could be the greatest, and aimed higher!! Loved the acting, loved the set, the music, the directing!! Everything is so good!"

Powerful stage adaptation of literary classic tours to Stroud

A POWERFUL stage adaptation of a literary classic is touring to Stroud. Jane Eyre: An Autobiography will be performed at the Cotswold Playhouse on Friday, October 10, at 7.30pm. It's being staged to mark the 200th anniversary of the deaths of Maria and Elizabeth Brontë, Charlotte Brontë's older sisters, who died in the spring of 1825. Both girls died of consumption at 10 and 11 years old, when Charlotte was only nine. Shane Morgan, director of the production, said: "There is no doubt whatever that the devastating impact of Maria and Elizabeth's deaths at just 10 and 11 years old respectively was key to the germination of the Jane Eyre whose orphaned heroine endures childhood loss, rejection and isolation as she embarks on her quest for familial love and somewhere to belong." The production is a revival of the 2015 adaptation by award-winning playwright Dougie Blaxland. It is produced by Live Wire and Roughhouse Theatre. The same team won the 2021 National Campaign for the Arts Award. The original production was described as 'a theatrical tour de force from a company with a rare gift for bringing classics to life with loyalty, energy and intrigue'. Movement director Moira Hunt said the story still resonates today. She said: "Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre broke the mould of the Victorian female stereotype through its dramatisation of a woman of independent mind and means who refuses to be subservient in any way to her male counterparts." Alison Campbell, who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, will reprise her role as Jane Eyre. She said: "The revival of the production to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the death of Maria and Elizabeth Brontë is of great significance in honouring the extraordinary Brontë family as a whole and highlighting the creative genius that emerged in the face of tragedy." More information and tickets are available at the Cotswold Playhouse website.

Stunning exhibition celebrating artist Paula Rego hosted in Kilmarnock

A public preview evening will take place at the Dick Institute on Thursday 19 June from 5pm, providing visitors with an early opportunity to experience the exhibition. One of the great printmakers and storytellers of our time, Paula Rego drew inspiration from a vast range of sources - from traditional folklore and fairy tales, to literary classics and nursery rhymes. (Image: ● Captain Hook and the Lost Boy, 1992, Coloured etching and aquatint on Somerset paper) Paula Rego: Visions of English Literature will present three of the artist's most ambitious and profound series of works in printmaking: Nursery Rhymes, Peter Pan and Jane Eyre, made across a decade of the artist's life. Each series will be accompanied by a variety of personal items from the artist, many of which have never been publicly displayed before. Unseen preparatory sketches, etching plates and Rego's very own childhood copy of Peter Pan will offer audiences an intimate portrayal of the artist's lifelong fascination with literature and insight into how the artist transformed this material into startlingly original and unexpected pictures. From menacing oversized creatures etched into life from children's nursery rhymes such as Little Miss Muffet and Three Blind Mice, to the almost hallucinatory depictions of Neverland from Peter Pan and the tumultuous relationships based on power read about in Jane Eyre, Rego's work tells stories that combine fantasy and imagination, innocence and cruelty, in order to explore the complexities of life and the experience of women in particular, in all its strangeness and mystery. Paula Rego: Visions of English Literature aims to spark new ways of seeing the world from audiences in relation to these seemingly familiar, age-old stories. Hayward Gallery Touring is the UK's largest contemporary art organisation producing exhibitions that tour Britain. As part of the Southbank Centre, an engine of creativity for the nation's artists and audiences, Hayward Gallery Touring is passionate about the important role that cultural institutions play in providing access to the arts. Paula Rego: Visions of English Literature will bring a unique cultural experience to new audiences up and down the UK, providing an opportunity to step into the world and mind of one of the most important figurative artists of her generation. Brian Cass, Senior Curator, Hayward Gallery Touring, says: 'Throughout her life, Paula Rego used print-making as a central tool of her art. Taking inspiration from literature, she connected with stories in very personal ways, using them to articulate the conditions of her own life and draw her desires, dreams, fears, and traumas into sequences of remarkable pictures. "Hayward Gallery Touring had the honour of working with Paula Rego on a small travelling show in the 1990s. We are absolutely delighted to continue this relationship 35 years later, and by collaborating with a range of exhibition patterns, celebrate her unique art and vision with audiences across the UK.' Geraldine Green, Visual Arts Development Officer, East Ayrshire Leisure, says: 'We are honoured to present Paula Rego: Visions of English Literature at the Dick Institute. Rego's work resonates deeply with audiences through its powerful storytelling and emotional intensity. "This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore her printmaking in depth, revealing the creative processes behind some of her most iconic series.' (Image: The Dick Institute, Kilmarnock) Paula Rego's Estate, says: 'Life with Paula was filled with stories, humour and mischief and she always seemed to have her own, surprising twist on the books she read. She often said that she had the most fun making the prints for these series because the stories were already laid out for her, but there's no question that she made them her own. "We'd like to thank Hayward Gallery Touring for mounting this exhibition.' Paula Rego: Visions of English Literature will be a long-standing touring exhibition, taking residency at further locations following its presentation at Lakeside Arts. These locations will be announced at a later date. Paula Rego: Visions of English Literature is a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition. It has been developed with the support of Paula Rego's Estate. Bettany Hughes: I couldn't finish reading Das Kapital

Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre. I read it first when I was 11 and it exploded my head with this world of female understanding and the tragedies of life. Emily Hauser's Mythica, a very cool book about the true stories in archaeology and history behind the women of all the famous myths. The Pursuit of the Millennium by Norman Cohn. It's about these crazy grassroots movements in the Middle Ages across Europe, where people thought that the second coming was about to happen. They reacted to it by leaving villages en masse and becoming choreomaniacs, where they went and danced their way through salvation. It's based on fascinating original research.
