Fresh off his Diamond League triumph in Paris, reigning world champion Neeraj Chopra will compete at the 64th Ostrava Golden Spike, a World Athletics Continental Tour (Gold level) meeting, on Tuesday. It will be his fifth competition of the season. He started the year with an invitational meet in Potchefstroom, South Africa, where he won with a throw of 84.52m. At his Diamond League opener in Doha, he broke the 90m mark for the first time with a throw of 90.23m, bettering his previous best of 89.94m. Despite the milestone, Neeraj finished second to Germany's Julian Weber, who threw a world-leading 91.06m — also his first 90m+ throw. After Doha, Neeraj competed at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Chorzow, Poland, where he (84.14m) again finished second to Weber (86.12m). (Source: X) Forced to skip the last two editions due to fitness issues, Indian javelin throw superstar Neeraj Chopra will look to claim the title when he makes his debut at the Golden Spike Athletics meet on Tuesday, an event that his coach Jan Zelezny won nine times in a storied career. The 27-year-old Chopra has had an impressive season so far, having won his first Diamond League title in two years in Paris after also breaching the elusive 90m mark during his second place finish in Doha DL in May. He was to take part at Golden Spike — a World Athletics Continental Tour Category A event — in 2023 and 2024 but had to skip the meet on both occasions. In 2024, he was present as a guest after opting out of competition due to an adductor muscle niggle. Neeraj Chopra is aiming to match his coach Jan Zelezny The double Olympic-medallist will be all the more eager to win the title as the Golden Spike was world record holder Zelezny's happy hunting ground during his playing days. The Czech legend, now 59, won nine titles between 1986 and 2006 – few of them with 90m-plus throws – in this prestigious event which was first held in 1961. Chopra has competed in Ostrava in the past but not at Golden Spike. He was part of the Asia Pacific team that competed in the IAAF Continental Cup in 2018 and had finished sixth with a throw of 80.24m. 'When I was kid, I watched a lot of videos and photos of athletes such as Usain Bolt competing here. I came last year but I didn't compete because of injury. In the absence of his German rival Julian Weber, the field in Ostrava is thin and Chopra will, no doubt, be the favourite for the title. Weber had beaten Chopra in Doha DL on May 16 and in Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet on May 23 in Poland but the Indian upstaged him in Paris on June 20 with his first round throw of 88.16m. Before Paris, Chopra had won his last DL title in Lausanne in June 2023 with a throw of 87.66m. Anderson Peters will also be in the fray in Ostrava but the two-time world champion from Grenada has been struggling to get the big throws. He finished third in both Doha DL and Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet, behind Weber and Chopra, and ended even lower at fifth in Paris with a modest 80.29m. Another German, 2016 Rio Olympics gold winner Thomas Rohler, will also compete though he is yet to gather steam in the season. The 30-year-old has a season's best of 80.79m. In fact, Rohler, who has a personal best of 93.90m, achieved way back in 2017, has been struggling for a long time. Between 2020 and 2024, he managed just one 80m-plus throw. Interestingly, Rohler won the javelin title in the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava with a throw of 87.07m with Chopra finishing sixth. On Tuesday, Chopra will be hoping to go even. Among the other six in the nine-man field in Ostrava, Tony Keranen of Finland has the best personal best of 85.27m. Chopra will be up against Peters and Rohler again at the NC Classic which he is hosting in Bengaluru on July 5.

Neeraj Chopra: ‘Very happy after Doha, no more 90m questions'
Neeraj Chopra has revealed his relief at being rid of the 90m questions that dogged him at every press conference since he won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Since the Tokyo Games, where he became the country's second individual gold medal winner at an Olympics, Neeraj has gone on to win plenty of accolades, including a silver at Paris Olympics last year and a gold and silver medals at the World Athletics Championships. But the 90m distance eluded him, with his best throw being just six centimetres short of the elusive threshold in javelin. That changed at the Doha Diamond League meet where he breached the 90m mark for the first time. But that Doha event was a mixed one for Neeraj as he had ended second behind Germany's Julian Weber, who also threw over the 90m mark for the first time in his career. Then at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial event too, Neeraj had ended behind Weber. At the Paris Diamond League meet on Friday evening, Neeraj finally defeated Weber. While talking to American media group Flo Track after the win, Neeraj was congratulated by the panellists on entering the 90m club earlier this year at Doha Diamond League. To this, Neeraj responded: 'I'm happy because before throwing 90m, (I used to get) lots of questions about it. Every interview, everyone asked me, 'when will you throw 90m?' So I'm very happy that one question is not there more. So I'm very happy with the throw. Hope I will throw much further than 90 metres.' Neeraj revealed that he will compete after at the Ostrava event on June 24. Javelin legend Jan Zelezny, who is the director of the Ostrava meet, has been working as Neeraj's coach. Neeraj called it 'one of the greatest competitions in track and field'. Talking about the Paris event, a 'tired' Neeraj said he was happy to win: 'It was a very good start. I felt really good at the start. But I had too much speed today. The runway was perfect, but I couldn't handle my speed today. So I need to do some more work for my last attack. It was a really good run up. I'm happy with the run-up and also the throw itself. The start was good but I was hoping for some more good throws. I'm happy to win here.' On being asked about his widespread popularity in track and field, Neeraj said: 'I feel really good because in track and field you can say like I am famous from India. But you know about cricket, how big cricket is in India. I'm very happy to represent my country in track and field and I'm proud that some other junior athletes are also coming. Maybe in few years they will throw far and (also do well in) some other events in track and field. So I'm very happy that not only me, but also some other junior athletes are also coming up from India.' Neeraj was also asked if being a great javelin thrower also made him a good cricket bowler since the delivery actions were similar. 'I have never tried because in cricket we have to throw the ball down. But in javelin (we throw up). But definitely I will try baseball, throw some pitches when I will be in USA. After Tokyo (winning Olympics gold in 2021) I was in Chula Vista for three months training. Maybe, next time when I come to USA, I will try baseball.'

Neeraj Chopra beats Germany's Weber to win Paris Diamond League title
Indian javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra won his first Diamond League title in two years as he upstaged Julian Weber of Germany after back-to-back second place finishes here on Friday. The 27-year-old Chopra won the title with his first round throw of 88.16m in a star-studded field having five competitors in the 90m club. His second throw measured 85.10m and he then fouled his next three attempts before recording 82.89m in his sixth and final effort. Weber was second with his opening throw of 87.88m, while Luiz Mauricio Da Silva of Brazil was third with his third round attempt of 86.62m. Chopra had breached the 90m mark in the Doha leg of the Diamond League on May 16 with a throw of 90.23m for a second place finish. Weber had won the title in Doha with his last round throw of 91.06m. The 31-year-old Weber had also beaten Chopra at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet on May 23 in Poland where both performed below their best under chilly and overcast conditions. Weber had produced 86.12m while Chopra could only come up 84.14m to finish second. Chopra had won his last DL title in Lausanne in June 2023 with a throw of 87.66m. Since then till Friday, he has finished second in six DL meetings. This was Chopra's first win in the Paris leg of the prestigious DL series. He last competed in the Paris DL in 2017 as a junior world champion and finished fifth with a throw of 84.67m. The two-time Olympic medallist Indian began the 2025 season with a title in an invitational meet at Potchefstroom, South Africa, which was a minor -- category F -- event with a throw of 84.52m. For breakfast, Chopra consumes fruits, yoghurt, oats, three-four egg whites, omelette, two pieces of bread, juice or coconut water. Meanwhile for lunch, he eats curt and rice, accompanied with pules, vegetables, grilled chicken and salad. Then in between training sessions, he consumes chia seeds, dry fruits, bananas, juice or coconut water. Then in dinner, he eats boiled vegetables, soup, salad, fruits and protein-rich foods. Before bedtime, he ends his day wih milk, dates and sometimes jaggery. Speaking to the Olympics media team, he said, 'When it comes to diet, emphasising natural foods such as fruits and salads is paramount.' He also pointed out, 'The diet changes a bit daily but mostly follows this pattern. This athlete's diet can be adapted for normal individuals who seek a healthy lifestyle. It's essential to avoid oily or fried foods and sweets, and focus on natural, nutritious options. Fitness is crucial for everyone and adopting a well-planned diet is beneficial.'
