UP to showcase cultural heritage at Japan Tourism Expo
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh will showcase its rich cultural, spiritual and natural heritage at the Japan Tourism Expo 2025 scheduled from Sep 25 to 28, an official spokesperson said on Wednesday. The UP tourism department will participate with a powerful and strategic presence, highlighting the state's heritage to a global audience, particularly visitors and investors from Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. Officials said a themed pavilion spanning 54sqm will be set up at the venue. It will use advanced technology like digital LED screens, auto-navigation displays and AR-based selfie panels to offer an immersive experience. Visitors will also get a glimpse of the state's handicrafts, culture, music and festivals, enriching their overall experience. "Information about UP's top tourist destinations will be shared with Japanese visitors. To facilitate this, special booklets will be printed in both English and Japanese. The state is positioning its rich spiritual and cultural heritage as a soft-power tool to attract Japanese tourists and investors, according to an official release issued here. The initiative is part of a broader vision to build stronger people-to-people connections between India and Japan. This initiative is part of a broader vision to build stronger people-to-people connections between India and Japan -- two nations linked by centuries-old spiritual bonds, especially through Buddhism. With Japanese tourist arrivals in India reaching 2.4 lakh in 2024 and contributing over ₹1,200 crore to the economy, the Yogi Adityanath government sees an opportunity to further tap into this niche with targeted outreach, according to the government release. To promote inbound tourism and investment, Uttar Pradesh will also highlight its strengths during the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show (UPITS-2025), to be held simultaneously in Greater Noida. The state will unveil a 465-square-meter experiential pavilion featuring live performances of Kathak, Mayur, and Tribal dances; selfie zones themed around mythological and rural figures; and interactive exhibits on One District One Product (ODOP) crafts and wellness tourism. 'Uttar Pradesh is not just a place to visit; it's a place to invest in heritage, experience spirituality, and witness living traditions,' a senior tourism official said. 'Through our presence in Japan, we aim to connect on a deeper cultural level and open doors for economic collaboration, especially in hospitality and wellness,' the official added. The Buddhist Circuit, spanning sites like Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti, and Kaushambi, will be the centrepiece of U.P's pitch. These locations, significant to the life of Gautam Buddha, have long drawn Japanese pilgrims. Complementing this spiritual narrative, the state will also promote yoga, naturopathy, rural homestays, and cultural trails aimed at wellness-seeking travellers, the release said. To facilitate tourism, U.P. will launch bilingual promotional material in Japanese and English, along with app-based guides and digital booking platforms for tourists. The pavilion in Japan will feature AR-based selfie spots, digital LED displays, and multilingual kiosks to help visitors explore travel options, according to the release.

In 2023–24, the government stated, India exported goods worth Rs 42,800 crore to Japan, including engineering goods, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. In return, imports from Japan totaled Rs 1.47 lakh crore, dominated by electronics, advanced machinery, and rare-earth materials. The UP government looks forward to attracting investment in the state's tourism sector, particularly in heritage hotels, wellness centres, and eco-resorts under the PPP model — sectors increasingly attractive to Japanese investors. The government also claimed that 2.4 lakh Japanese tourists visited India in 2024, contributing approximately Rs 1,200 crore to the Indian economy. These tourists stayed an average of 16.3 days, spending about Rs 1.45 lakh per person. In contrast, 2.33 lakh Indian tourists travelled to Japan, spending roughly ¥56.1 billion (Rs 3,366 crore). Recognizing this mutual tourism potential, the government aims to strategically position Uttar Pradesh not only as an attractive investment destination but also as a 'most favored tourist destination' for Japanese travelers.
