The Food Melania Trump Absolutely Refuses To Eat (Even When Visiting Foreign Leaders)
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. The role of the First Lady in American society ranges from cultural influencer to social advocate, with variations as diverse and distinct as the people who held the title. Accompanying the Commander-in-Chief to official dinners held by foreign leaders is another duty assigned to this prestigious position, and First Lady Melania Trump has a strict rule about what she's willing to eat during these auspicious occasions. In "Melania," the First Lady's 2024 memoir, Trump provided a directive to the chefs at Japan's Imperial Palace in 2019. "I made it known that I do not eat raw fish," said Trump (via Hola!). Despite her refusal to consume raw fish — which is commonly enjoyed in Japan — Trump claimed, "I still made an effort to try local cuisine whenever possible." She went on to praise the "delicious blend of flavors and textures" of the foods she was willing to eat during her dinner with the Japanese Imperial Family. While some might question the First Lady's stance, at least it didn't lead to the kind of mishap that befell a different White House occupant. Famously, President George H.W. Bush vomited into the lap of then Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa in Tokyo. The cause was later determined to be a bout of acute gastroenteritis, a temporary stomach ailment that often results from bacterial and viral infections. Read more: 12 Cheap Fish You Should Absolutely Never Eat Melania Trump's memoir is brimming with personal insights straight from the unfathomable mind of the First Lady, but it doesn't appear that Trump ever explains her distaste for raw fish. That leaves us to speculate why she might avoid such preparations. For example, concerns about food safety are common when it comes to all types of uncooked items. While some of us at Mashed (i.e., me) have a huge affinity for raw fish (and aren't afraid of questionable gas station sushi), improperly prepared foods can cause severe bouts of foodborne illness in vulnerable people, such as those over 65 and people with compromised immune function. While healthy people face a relatively low risk, they can still experience symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting should they encounter a bad piece of fish. To many people, the tender, toothsome texture of raw fish is one of its biggest selling points, but others find it off-putting. There's no way to tell whether Trump falls into the latter camp, but it's worth considering what we know about the First Lady's preferred foods. It's been reported that she is a fan of breakfast smoothies, Diet Coke, and entrees like chicken Parmigianino. So perhaps her tastes simply veer away from dishes like sushi, sashimi, and ceviche. Japan's Emperor, Empress arrive in Mongolia for official visit
Japan's Emperor and Empress arrived in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar on Sunday. This is their first visit to the country as Emperor and Empress. The Imperial couple also received flowers and spoke with the people who came to welcome them. Local TV stations aired their arrival live. The couple headed to a hotel in the capital by car. The Emperor and Empress will view exhibits on Mongolia's history and culture when they visit a national museum on Monday. They will also inspect water supply facilities built with Japan's support. They will attend a welcome ceremony as state guests on Tuesday and meet with Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh and his wife before attending a banquet at their hotel in the evening. On Tuesday afternoon, the couple will pay their respects at a monument for Japanese nationals who died from hard labor and other causes after being detained by the former Soviet Union and sent to Mongolia shortly after the end of World War Two. Toward the end of the visit, they are expected to attend the opening ceremony of a national sports festival called Naadam, and watch an archery competition and horse racing.

Japan's Ex-Princess Mako Welcomes First Child After Royal Exit: Report
Mako Komuro, the former Princess of Japan, who gave up her royal position to marry a commoner, has reportedly given birth to her first child in New York. The birth was reportedly kept under wraps, and Japan's Imperial Household has not released an official statement. The Akishino family's eldest daughter, who quit the Japanese Imperial Family in 2021 to marry her college sweetheart, Kei Komuro, has maintained a low profile since the couple moved to the United States, according to reports. Ms Mako, 33, was earlier spotted shopping in New York. She was in loose attire, leaving the media to speculate about her pregnancy. The pair was seen with a pram, which fueled rumors about the impending arrival of a new member into the family, according to The Daily Guardian. Despite the growing hype, the Imperial Household Agency has not yet provided official confirmation. The infant, when confirmed, will be the first great-grandchild of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. Mako Komuro is the eldest child of Crown Princess Kiko and Crown Prince Fumihito (Prince Akishino). In 2021, she married Kei Komuro, a fellow student she met at Tokyo's International Christian University. After a turbulent engagement, Ms Mako gave up her royal position to marry Mr Komuro and declared her intention to have a happy life with her "irreplaceable" husband. Japanese imperial rules require female royals to give up their royal titles if they marry someone outside the imperial family; male royals are spared from this rule. Ms Mako further declined the one-time payment of around $1.3 million customarily given to royal ladies who leave the imperial family after marriage. The couple defied convention by skipping the customs and rituals customary for royal weddings, including a reception. Following their modest wedding, the couple relocated to New York, where he is currently practising law.

64 Pct OK Female Members to Retain Imperial Status: Jiji Poll
News from Japan May 22, 2025 18:45 (JST) Tokyo, May 22 (Jiji Press)--Nearly two-thirds of respondents think female members of the Japanese Imperial Family should retain their status after marriage, a Jiji Press opinion poll showed Thursday. While 64.9 pct of respondents backed that idea, 10.7 pct opposed it and a total of 24.3 pct had no opinion or were not sure. The poll also asked whether respondents agree that male members in the paternal line of 11 former Imperial Family branches, which left the Imperial Family after the end of World War II, should be adopted back into the family. This idea was supported by 39.2 pct of respondents, while those who opposed it or either had no opinion or were not sure accounted for 22.2 pct and 38.6 pct, respectively. These ideas have been proposed to ensure stable Imperial succession amid a decline in the number of Imperial Family members. [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.] Jiji Press
