Estimated magnitude 7.2 earthquake hits Alaska
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has notified Japan's Meteorological Agency that an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.2 has struck off the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.
The quake occurred at around 12:38 p.m. Wednesday, local time, or 5:38 a.m. Thursday, Japan time.
The agency says there is a possibility of tsunami near the focus of the quake, but there will be no impact on Japan.
