Toronto Maple Leafs may use cap space to reshape roster, Calle Jarnkrok a trade option

Christopher Katsarov/The Canadian Press With more than $5 million in available cap space and only Nick Robertson left to sign, the Toronto Maple Leafs are in a flexible position this offseason. While the team is unlikely to spend all of it immediately, trade discussions and roster tweaks remain possible. One name emerging in speculation is Calle Jarnkrok, whose recent injury struggles and cap hit could make him a candidate for a move. Calle Jarnkrok's future uncertain as Toronto Maple Leafs explore roster adjustments Calle Jarnkrok had a solid debut season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2022–23, scoring 20 goals and 39 points in 73 games. However, the past two seasons have been plagued by injuries, limiting him to just 71 games combined, in which he scored 11 goals and 28 points. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Toronto has had discussions with Jarnkrok, and while there is no formal trade request, the forward may not be opposed to one under the current circumstances. Jarnkrok carries a $2.1 million AAV cap hit for one more year and has a 10-team no-trade list. Though his contract isn't overly difficult to move, several rebuilding teams that typically absorb contracts to hit the cap floor have already made their moves this summer. If the Maple Leafs want to clear space or create opportunity for younger talent, Jarnkrok could be a logical piece to move. Increased roster competition and Nick Robertson's expected role add pressure on lineup decisions One of the pressing reasons behind the speculation is Nick Robertson. The young winger is due for a new contract and is expected to need a near full-time role with the Toronto Maple Leafs next season. With healthy players like Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, and Steven Lorentz also vying for everyday spots, a roster crunch is inevitable. The team may need to part with someone to make room, especially if they want to remain flexible during the regular season. Trading Jarnkrok would not only help balance the roster but also give Toronto some cushion to pursue mid-season upgrades or handle unexpected injuries. The Toronto Maple Leafs aren't in a rush to spend their remaining cap space, but they may still consider reshaping their lineup. With Calle Jarnkrok's declining availability and growing roster competition, he stands out as a potential trade chip. As the offseason continues, Toronto's front office could look to make a quiet but strategic move. Berube tweaks Leafs' look, but top line unchanged

FORT LAUDERDALE – Craig Berube is going back for the future. The Maple Leafs head coach will dress forwards Calle Jarnkrok and Pontus Holmberg for Game 6 of their second-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers with Toronto facing elimination down 3-2 on Friday. Jarnkrok and Holmberg took a seat in Game 5 for Nick Robertson and David Kampf in the Leafs' disastrous 6-1 loss Wednesday that pushed them to the brink of elimination. Berube will also keep star forwards Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner together on Toronto's top line despite the duo's offensive struggles against tight-checking Florida. Matthews has yet to score in the series, while Marner bagged the winner in Game 2 as the Leafs built a 2-0 lead that has since evaporated with three straight losses. Story continues below advertisement Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues will miss a second straight contest for the defending Stanley Cup champions after taking a big hit from Leafs defenceman Oliver-Ekman-Larsson, which resulted in an interference penalty, in Game 4. 'I liked our game with the other guys in the lineup,' Berube said of making two changes to his bottom-6 forward group. 'Other guys are rested, ready to go. We played good hockey with that lineup we have (for Game 6).' The 2019 Cup winner with the St. Louis Blues said he contemplated splitting Matthews and Marner for Friday's must-win showdown, but decided against a drastic change with his team's season on the line for the first time. 'It's always a consideration,' Berube said. 'I've split them up this year at times, and I never felt that it really did anything, to be honest. These guys have been a combo for a long time. They've had a lot of success, so I trust them. 'I trust in them. I believe in them.' The Panthers have got depth scoring in the series, while the Leafs have struggled to generate offence across the board with just on goal dating back to the third period of Game 3. Story continues below advertisement Five of Toronto's bottom-6 forwards set to dress Friday — Jarnkrok, Holmberg, Bobby McMann, Steven Lorentz and Scott Laughton — have combined for zero goals in the playoffs. Max Domi, meanwhile, scored twice in the first round against the Ottawa Senators in the Leafs' six-game victory. Robertson registered the team's consolation goal late in Game 5 against Florida. 'We do need them to chip in,' Berube said of his supporting cast. 'It's not like they're not trying to score. They've just got to keep doing what they're doing and see what happens with goals. 'But we do need contributions from everybody.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 16, 2025.

Maple Leafs activate Calle Jarnkrok, will be in lineup against Sharks

Calle Jarnkrok's time has come. The Maple Leafs activated the veteran forward on Monday from longterm injured reserve, a couple of hours before playing host to the San Jose Sharks at Scotiabank Arena. Jarnkrok hasn't played in 2024-25 after he was knocked out of training camp with an injury and subsequently had groin/sports hernia surgery in November. Leafs coach Craig Berube said Jarnkrok will play the right wing on a line with centre David Kampf and Connor Dewar against the Sharks as Toronto goes for its sixth win in a row. 'He's excited to get back, it has been a long wait,' Berube said. 'He has played a long time in the league, he knows how to play. He has practised really well, he looks good. 'I expect him to have good energy out there. He's a smart player. That line could be effective in both ends of the rink. I think they can get us some opportunities to score some goals, but that should be a good line that can check and go against any of their lines.' Ryan Reaves will be scratched with Jarnkrok back. Otherwise, Berube said, there will be no other lineup changes from Sunday, when the Leafs won 6-5 in overtime in Pittsburgh against the Penguins. Forward Steven Lorentz (undisclosed) and defenceman Chris Tanev (upper body) will be out of the lineup again. Anthony Stolarz will get the start in goal for the Leafs. As a result of the activation of Jarnkrok, the Leafs assigned forward Alex Steeves to the Toronto Marlies. The Leafs were pumped to get Jarnkrok back into game action. 'That's great to see,' defenceman Conor Timmins said. 'We see all the behind-the-scenes stuff that you guys don't and he has been working so hard, came to work every day and we're excited have him back. '(He brings) a little bit of everything. Big boost to our lineup.' There wasn't much time for the Leafs to enjoy being back home. After arriving in Toronto on Sunday night from Pittsburgh, the Leafs will head for Las Vegas on Tuesday where they will play the Golden Knights on Wednesday to begin a three-game trip. Amidst the trip, of course, will be the National Hockey League trade deadline on Friday. 'It kind of feels like we're still on the road, knowing that we have to leave tomorrow,' Timmins said. 'But we're excited to be back in front of our fans and tonight will be a fun one. 'I did some laundry (during the short stint at home), cleaned my apartment and then packed myself right back up.' tkoshan@ X: @koshtorontosun San Jose Sharks' Macklin Celebrini negotiating choppy waters of first season Maple Leafs' Max Domi: Wayne Gretzky 'makes me so proud to be Canadian'
