Jarryd Hayne returns to Origin arena side-by-side with his family

It was his heroics that helped NSW on the field 11 years ago, but Jarryd Hayne had a different seat in the Origin house on Wednesday night. The once Blues fullback and his wife Amellia marked a touching family moment with their kids at the State of Origin decider, sharing wholesome photos to social media while at the game. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? The 37-year-old took to Facebook to show the smiling family all decked out in Blues gear, with Hayne and his kids in hoodies and Amellia along with the children in NSW caps. Each looked smitten among the 80,000 sellout crowd, with his daughter even bringing along a small hand drawn poster to help celebrate. Sadly celebrations would have been few as Hayne's former side dropped to a disappointing 24-12 loss, handing the series shield back to Queensland on home soil. 'Taking our babies to there (sic) first Origin game,' Hayne captioned the images. 'Wasn't our night last night but couldn't wipe the smile from there faces,' adding a heart emoji. The 'Hayne plane' notched up 23 appearances for the Blues across 10 years and is the state's joint top try scorer with Josh Addo-Carr and Michael O'Connor on 11. Hayne was a critical member of the infamous 2014 series where NSW ended an eight-year drought, taking home the Brad Fittler medal as NSW's best player in the series. He then made the sensational move to America after signing for the San Francisco 49ers in 2015 before moving back to Australia. Hayne was in the spotlight in 2023 after being sentenced for two counts of sexual intercourse without consent, but it was overturned a year later. He was freed from prison in June 2024 after the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal quashed the conviction. Hayne made his return to rugby league this year after signing to play with the Wentworthville Magpies, making his debut for the side in the Ron Massey Cup in May. A large part of his motivation in coming back was to play football in front of his children. 'Never did I imagine that I would ever come back,' he said at the time. 'I am excited to begin my journey at a family club like Wenty, especially to play in front of my children, which was part of the reason that inspired me to come back.' But the disappointment of this year's Origin series means Hayne and his family will have to wait another year to potentially see NSW lift the shield once more.

Jarryd Hayne marks a family milestone with his kids at State of Origin as footy great and his wife are pictured together for the first time in over two years

Jarryd Hayne and his partner, Amellia, shared a snap of themselves taking their young children to their first-ever State of Origin game on Wednesday evening. Unfortunately for Hayne, a former New South Wales player, the match resuld didn't quite end up how he would have liked, with the Blues failing to retain the shield. Billy Slater's Queensland side thumped their rivals 24-12, with New South wales being swept away by their rivals, after the Maroons took a 20-0 lead at half-time. Hayne made 23 appearances for New South Wales during his 12-year career in footy's top flight, and ranks joint-top as the side's all-time top try scorer (11) alongside Josh Addo-Carr and Michael O'Connor. On Wednesday night, the 2009 Dally M medallist donned a blue NSW hoodie, while his children also wore New South Wales hoodies and Blues baseball caps. The family beamed from ear to ear as they soaked up the electric atmosphere inside the Accor Stadium. Jarryd Hayne and his wife Amellia shared pictures of themselves and their children on Facebook inside the Accor Stadium on Wednesday night watching State of Origin III Hayne added a caption to the images stating that this was his kids' first-ever State of Origin match The family lapped up the atmosphere as both teams ran out for the crunch decider, but ultimately there was heartbreak for ex-NSW player Hayne as the Blues side came unstuck against the Maroons 'Taking our babies to their first Origin game. Wasn't our night last night but couldn't wipe the smile from their faces,' Hayne wrote on Facebook, adding a 'love heart' emoji. Hayne had signed for the San Francisco 49ers back in 2015 before leaving the NFL franchise the following year. He met his wife Amellia upon returning to Australia and the pair later got engaged in 2020 before they were wed in a secret ceremony on Australia Day in January 2021. Hayne was sentenced to three years behind bars in 2023 after a court found him guilty of two counts of sexual intercourse without consent - a conviction which was overturned a year later. He was freed from prison in June 2024 after the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal quashed the conviction. Hayne has since returned to footy, signing a deal to play with the Wentworthville Magpies in February, before turning out to play for the Western Sydney side in the Ron Massey Cup. Hayne had last stepped foot on a rugby league pitch back in 2018, while he was still on the books at Parramatta. He had previously signed to play for the United Sporting Club in the January Nines Premier League on the Gold Coast, but a hamstring injury had hampered his playing time. The 37-year-old has returned to the footy pitch this season, signing for the Wentworthville Magpies In May, Hayne stepped back onto the footy pitch and helped guide the Pies to a victory against the Western Bulldogs In May, he'd finally make his return to play and showed no signs of rustiness as he led Wentworthville to a comeback victory against the Bulldogs at Ringrose Park. 'It was good for about 70 minutes, then the last 10 killed me,' Hayne told Channel 9. 'Good to get the 80 [minutes] though, we've got the bye [round] next week so I'll be recovering.' The 37-year-old, who also won 11 caps for the Kangaroos, looked delighted to be back out on the pitch again, stating: 'For me, it's about playing footy and having fun again.' He had also previously opened up on his desire to play footy in front of his kids. 'Grateful to be back playing the game I love,' he said, following the announcement he had joined the Magpies. 'Never did I imagine that I would ever come back. I am excited to begin my journey at a family club like Wenty, especially to play in front of my children, which was part of the reason that inspired me to come back. 'Thank you for all the support.' The former Eels player has also spent time in the last 10 months working with the Fiji rugby league national team as a mentor for the squad In October 2024, Hayne also linked up with Fiji's rugby league side for their Pacific Championship campaign. The 37-year-old was employed as a mentor for the squad. Hayne had represented the Fijian rugby league side on 10 occasions during his career, while also switching codes in 2016 to play for the Fiji Sevens side for five matches. He had hoped to secure a spot with the team for the 2016 Olympics but was not picked as part of the squad to travel to Rio, instead returning to the NRL to play for the Gold Coast Titans.

Matty Johns drops uncomfortable truth about Origin ‘disgrace'

Matty Johns has turned the tables on the swirling criticism directed at referee Ashley Klein following Queensland's nail-biting win on Wednesday night in Perth. There have been calls for Klein to be stripped of officiating duties for the State of Origin series decider with NRL commentators left up in arms over a one-sided penalty count in the Maroons' favour during Game 2 at Optus Stadium. On the back of the penalty avalanche, Queensland charged to a 26-6 half time lead before holding on for a famous victory, setting up a decider back in Sydney. Former NSW players Jarryd Hayne and Jamie Soward were among the commentators to be left gobsmacked that the penalty count stood 8-0 in Queensland's favour at half time. The count ended 10-2. However, Johns on Thursday dropped a brutal truth that the penalty count was justified. 'Us New South Welshman, most people will point to that and go look at that, but I tell you what, we were f***ing undisciplined,' he said on the Backstage with Cooper and Matty Johns podcast. 'That's it. Don't blame the referee. We were undisciplined.' However, it was the cheap nature of some of the six-again ruck infringement penalties that caught the eye of other commentators on Wednesday night. Hayne took to X in the first half, posting: 'This is why Origin is the greatest game in this country!!! Regardless of the pressure teams face, it is the team spirit that truly matters. 'Ps 7-0 pen count. Did some individuals attempt to influence the referees to force a decider?' Former NSW playmaker Soward wrote: 'That will do me. Ash doing his best to get in the way here.' According to the popular 'Oracle' profile on X, it was the first time in Origin history that a team was awarded the first nine penalties of a match. There was no doubt the Blues didn't help themselves with poor discipline but such a lopsided penalty count is rare in Origin with penalties usually only blown for blatant transgressions. Queensland were questioned over meeting with the referee before the first game, so it remains to be seen if they had another chat prior to game two in Perth. Blues skipper Isaah Yeo was pictured in a tense exchange with Klein during the match, presumably about the penalty count. Daley was blunt when asked what he thought of the penalty count. 'I can't tell you what I honestly think, so I'm not going to,' Daley said. Yeo believes there were a number of penalties that were warranted against the Blues, but he believes the 50/50s went against them. 'There's certainly a few that we were shooting ourselves in the foot with and they were just penalties,' Yeo said. 'Other ones are 50-50. Some nights you get them, some nights you don't. So what you can't do is you can't go drop the ball early in the next set early in the tackle count when you've got the ball. 'So obviously I'd like that to be a bit more even, but we were our own worst enemy at times as well.' However, the biggest enemy for NSW was Zac Lomax's boot. NSW scored five tries to Queensland's four, but the Eels star hit the posts twice and converted just one two of his five shots on goal. That's what proved the difference, at least in the eyes of some. For others, Klein's whistle is being viewed as Queensland's man of the match. Leading NRL reporter Dean Ritchie wrote on X: 'Well, well, well. Never thought I'd see the perfect Origin team. Penalties: Qld 8 NSW 0.' He pointed out NSW had to wait 45 minutes to be awarded their first penalty and then went on to score shortly after. Aussie sports broadcaster Adam Hawse wrote on X: 'Klein's whistle will give us all nightmares, but Blues were own worst enemy in first half. Poor discipline. Poor handling. No control. 'I think Ashley Klein's streak of 11 Origins in a row has come to an end.'

Jarryd Hayne stars in rugby league return, Wentworthville Magpies defeat Canterbury Bulldogs

Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Jarryd Hayne has officially made his return to rugby league after playing for the Wentworthville Magpies in the Ron Massey Cup on Sunday. The two-time Dally M winner starred as the Magpies took down the Canterbury Bulldogs 22-14 at Ringrose Park, Sydney. Hayne's return was delayed after the former Parramatta Eels Grand Finalist suffered a hamstring injury with medical staff electing to err on the side of caution. He showed no signs of the injury on Sunday as the Magpies produced a come from behind victory. Hayne in action during his rugby league return. Picture: Backgrid/ The Bulldogs went into the sheds at halftime holding the 14-10 advantage but it was one-way traffic in the second half as the Magpies soared. With the score tied at 14-all, Hayne threw a cut-out pass to set up winger Austin Quast to score. Hayne came close to scoring himself, giving a nice pass to second-rower Felix Niutili-Schmidt before nearly going over for a four-pointer on the ensuing play. Tries to Quast, Jordan Hill and Liam Scolari all came within a blistering 13-minute display as they took the lead and never looked back. Hayne appeared in good spirits, celebrating with his teammates after setting up a try and also exchanging words with opposition players at one point of the contest. Few words were exchanged between the players. Picture: Backgrid/ Hayne taking on the challengers and setting up his teammates. Picture: Backgrid/ The return to rugby league comes after Hayne spent nearly two years in prison due to sexual assault charges. Those convictions were quashed by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal in June last year with Hayne ultimately walking free. He played his last NRL game in 2018 but has been looking to get back to the top of the sport since being released. Hayne's return was a success. Picture: Backgrid/ He recently was one of several former NRL players who played in the 2025 Nines Premier League trophy but spent minimal time on the field due to hamstring concerns. And while irrespective of how he performs for the Magpies this season it would shock to see him return to the NRL, Hayne has reportedly set his sights on representing Fiji again at the end of this year if he can get his body in good enough shape. Hayne was previously part of Fiji's 2008 and 2017 World Cup squads. He also represented the Pacific nation in rugby sevens after a brief stint in the NFL stint with the San Francisco 49ers. Ex-NRL star Jarryd Hayne breaks silence as he returns to the footy pitch for the first time since he was released from prison

Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne has broken his silence after returning to play footy again. The former Parramatta Eels star played his last game in the NRL back in 2018, and on Sunday afternoon, turned out for the Wentworthville Magpies in the Ron Massey Cup. It comes 11 months after Hayne was released from prison after the former Parramatta Eels star won an appeal against his rape convictions. The footy star's career came to a premature end after Hayne was sentenced to three years behind bars. He had served one year of his sentence before his release in June 2024. He was convicted of two counts of sexual intercourse without consent on April 2023, but both convictions were subsequently quashed by the New South Wales Court of Appeal. The 37-year-old, who made 176 appearances for Parramatta, had been nearing a return to the footy pitch over the past few months but a hamstring injury had slowed his return to action. Last year, Hayne signed with the United Sporting Club to play in January's Nines Premier League on the Gold Coast but spent little time on the pitch, due to injury. But on Sunday, he finally made his return to the pitch, turning out for the Wentworthville Magpies, a Parramatta feeder club, in the Ron Massey Cup. And he showed no signs of rustiness, nor injury, as he helped the Magpies seal a comeback victory against the Canterbury Bulldogs at Ringrose Park. 'It was good for about 70 minutes, then the last 10 killed me,' Hayne told Channel 9. 'Good to get the 80 [minutes] though, we've got the bye [round] next week so I'll be recovering.' After the Bulldogs took a 14-10 lead into the sheds at halftime, Hayne, who also played as a running back for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL, stepped up to produce a perfectly weighted pass to winger Austin Quast, who dotted down to tie the scores at 14 points apiece. Hayne also came close to crossing the whitewash himself on the following play. The Magpies subsequently went on to claim a 22-14 victory. On Sunday, the two-time Dally M Medallist made his rugby league return for the Wentworthville Magpies The former Dally M medallist was a physical presence on the field and looked in great shape as he broke through tackles and flung some stunning passes out wide He added that he was looking forward to playing more footy and 'having fun again' The footy star, meanwhile, looked happy to be back on the pitch, smiling and laughing with his team-mates as he returned to the pitch for the first time since 2018. 'It's been a journey, but it's life. We move forward,' Hayne said. 'It's been good to get the win.' The former Fiji star also revealed that he hadn't missed playing footy until a year ago. 'I probably didn't miss it until about a year ago and it's been a good break, I've enjoyed it. I love my sport, touch footy, Oztag, I'm always doing something. 'To come out here - they're a good bunch of boys.
