Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad has been appointed director-general, effective July 7.
He replaces Datuk Azman Adnan, who went on mandatory retirement effective July 5.
Describing Mohd Azam's appointment as the 'right choice', Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the former education deputy director-general (Professionalism Development Sector) has over 36 years of experience in the education sector.
'His extensive knowledge and experience as a teacher and leader at various levels, including as the Jasin District Education officer, Melaka State Education director, Examination director, Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia (IPGM) rector and Education deputy director-general (Professionalism Development Sector), are valuable assets for him to lead the country's education towards brilliance.
'I put my full trust in Mohd Azam and team to provide focus to some important agendas, especially the implementation of the 2027 school curriculum and the new education blueprint,' she said in a Facebook post on July 7.
Expressing confidence in Mohd Azam in a statement on July 5, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the former would be able to further strengthen the country's education system and drive it towards greater excellence.
'This appointment is also in line with the nation's aspiration to uphold education based on Madani values, for the progress of the country and the holistic development of Malaysian children.
'Congratulations and best wishes in fulfilling this responsibility,' he said.
Azam began his career in public service on March 1, 1989, as an education service officer (PPP).
He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Malay Language, a Master's Degree in Linguistics, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Strategic Communication from Universiti Malaya.
