Knicks Under Fire Over Head Coach Search After Jason Kidd Update
Knicks Under Fire Over Head Coach Search After Jason Kidd Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks are on the receiving end of criticism following the surprise firing of Tom Thibodeau. The veteran head coach left the team after five seasons, posting a 226-174 record (24-23 in the playoffs) and leading it to back-to-back 50-plus-win seasons. Advertisement Thibodeau took the team back to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years, but the Indiana Pacers stopped their remarkable run with a 4-2 win. A couple of days later, the two-time Coach of the Year award recipient was dismissed. The team started looking for a replacement shortly after, and the front office reportedly focused on several coaches already employed around the league. Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Wednesday that the Knicks' request to interview Jason Kidd, currently with the Dallas Mavericks, was strongly denied. They additionally reached out to the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Houston Rockets to ask permission to interview Chris Finch and Ime Udoka, respectively, but their attempts weren't fruitful, either. Former New York Knicks head coach Tom ThibodeauVincent Carchietta-Imagn Images The latest update on Kidd raised several eyebrows on social media. Many fans criticized the team for firing Thibodeau without apparently having a clear plan to find his replacement. Advertisement "knicks don't know what the hell they doin," one fan wrote. "So they fired Thibs with essentially no plan…" another fan said. "Sounds like they really thought this out," a third fan sarcastically said. "This is a bad look on Dolan and Leon Rose…" a fourth fan added. "From an optics perspective, it makes @nyknicks look like a joke. Patently, no firm plan for any one candidate & no proper contingencies in place," a fifth fan wrote. "Knicks strategy is reaching out to teams current head coaches," a sixth fan said. There are still good coaches like Michael Malone and Taylor Jenkins unemployed out there, but the Knicks' front office has taken a different route. The offseason just started for them, and perhaps new opportunities will come, but fans aren't happy with their current approach. Advertisement New York has a solid team that showed it can contend, but if it fails to find the right piece to coach it, the disappointment will continue. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd reveals plans for Cooper Flagg's NBA rookie season
To hardly anyone's surprise, the Dallas Mavericks selected Cooper Flagg with the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Flagg, 18, became one of the youngest basketball stars taken at No. 1. LeBron James retains the distinction of being the youngest player in league history to be taken with the top overall pick. Flagg described the moment he heard his name called by the NBA commissioner as "a dream come true." While Flagg primarily spent time at the traditional forward position during his lone season at Duke, the team's roster also listed him as a guard. Former Mavericks player and current coach Jason Kidd admitted he takes a more nuanced approach to players' positions. "I don't look at the position," Kidd said during a press conference. Flagg is expected to make his debut at the NBA Summer League on July 10 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Kidd revealed he wants to see Flagg in action at the point guard position. "I want to put him at point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts. Be able to run the show. Be able to play (shooting guard). Play (small forward). He's comfortable playing that. We want to push. I think he's going to respond in a positive way." Mavericks part-owner Mark Cuban backed the idea of testing Flagg at the point guard spot. Kidd said he received a text from the billionaire reading, "point guard, point guard, point guard, let him bring the ball up." The 6-foot-9 basketball phenom was charged with bringing the ball up the court and getting the offense set up at times at Duke. He ultimately led the Blue Devils in assists. Kidd brushed off concerns about Flagg potentially making mistakes while handling the ball as he played the guard position. "It's all right to fail, it's all right to turn the ball over. We've talked about that. Just understanding the guys that I've been around that have been young from Giannis (Antetokounmpo), giving him the ball, and he failed, but he wanted to come back and have the ball." Kidd expressed excitement about Flagg having the ball at summer league in Las Vegas. "I'm excited to give him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens. Let's get it started right off the bat," the Mavs head coach said. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Why Dallas plans to make Cooper Flagg 'uncomfortable' at Summer League
Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd says he wants to play Cooper Flagg some at point guard:"I'm excited about giving him the ball"#mffl #dallasmavericks The Dallas Mavericks clearly have faith in their top 2025 NBA Draft pick Cooper Flagg, so much so that they plan to make him "uncomfortable" in NBA Summer League completion. During recent media availability, Mavs coach Jason Kidd talked about how he wants to mix things up for the former Duke forward during summer game play and see how he reacts. "I don't look at the position," Kidd said. "I want to put him at point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts (to) being able to run the show." Obviously, this doesn't mean Kidd wants to watch Flagg struggle just for struggling's sake. This clearly shows the kind of confidence Dallas has in him to adapt on the fly to new responsibilities. "We want to push," Kidd continued. "And I think he's going to respond in a positive way. It's all right to fail. It's all right to turn the ball over. We've talked about that." While we doubt we see Flagg running point a ton during his first NBA season, it's good that the Mavs are trying to get the first overall pick accustomed to all the kinds of things he might do one day on the Dallas basketball court.

Jason Kidd's Immediate Message To Cooper Flagg Revealed
Jason Kidd's Immediate Message To Cooper Flagg Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It is official: Duke phenom Cooper Flagg is a member of the Dallas Mavericks after he was selected with the No. 1 pick in Wednesday's NBA draft. Advertisement For months, people have been enthralled by Flagg's potential. At 6-foot-9, he can do just about anything on the basketball court at a high level—score, handle the ball, pass, rebound and defend—and scouts have raved about his competitiveness. Right after the Mavs took Flagg, head coach Jason Kidd called him and welcomed him to the organization. "You can breathe now," Kidd said. "Welcome to the Mavs family. We're excited." Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks a game and shot 48.1% from the field and 38.5% from 3-point range this past season. Duke lost in the Final Four round of the men's NCAA Tournament to Houston despite possessing plenty of talent, including other players who also went in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. Cooper Flagg (left) was selected first overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2025 NBA Draft.© Bob Donnan-Imagn Images Some have compared the 18-year-old to Scottie Pippen, the Hall of Famer who won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. Pippen could push the ball in transition and was essentially the Bulls' point forward. Pippen consistently scored about 20 points a game and was one of the greatest defenders in basketball history. Advertisement After the Mavs traded Luka Doncic in early February, they suffered plenty of bad fortune, including injuries to key players such as Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. But now, their immediate and medium-term future is bright, owning one of the NBA's best frontcourts with Flagg helping to anchor things.
