Wests Tigers torched over player exists as Tallyn Da Silva defection confirmed

The Wests Tigers have been heavily criticised for their inability to retain talented young players following the departure of back-up hooker Tallyn Da Silva to Parramatta. Da Silva had been contracted at the Tigers until the end of 2026, but like Lachlan Galvin, the 20-year-old has left the Tigers with 18 months left on his deal. On Monday the Eels confirmed they had signed Da Silva effective immediately until the end of the 2029 season in a coup for coach Jason Ryles as he rebuilds Parramatta's roster. Da Silva's departure is the latest blow for the Tigers, who sit 14th on the NRL ladder and are desperate to avoid a fourth wooden spoon in a row. On NRL 360, veteran reporter Phil Rothfield said the list of promising young players to leave the Tigers was a damning indictment on the club. 'I'll name some players,' Rothfield said. 'Galvin, Da Silva, (Stefano) Utoikamanu, Shawn Blore, there was a schoolboy there — Onitoni Large. 'He broke his contract to get out of that club. Why have five outstanding young players in the last 12 months, all wanted out of the Wests Tigers? Five outstanding young footballers have walked out of their club. 'Have they given up on this season? What happens if Api gets hurt? Their two best youngsters have left that club. 'I have spoken to a lot of very good judges in the game who rate him very highly. That's why Manly, Newcastle and Parramatta wanted him.' Brent Read responded: 'He (Da Silva) is far from the finished product right now. He's a few years off. Api helps them win footy games. 'They were assured by Tallyn Da Silva and his parents that Tallyn wanted to stay at the club, but if Api re-signed, he would leave. Richo (Tigers boss Shane Richardson) was assured by his family that Tallyn's preference was to stay at the Tigers and be there long term.' Da Silva was behind Api Koroisau in the pecking order at the Tigers, but Rothfield said the Tigers should have been able to get Da Silva to at least see out his contract, highlighting the fact the Raiders and Broncos have several back-up hookers on their roster. 'The Canberra Raiders are leading the comp. They've got a kid called Owen Pattie, really good hooker but can't break into that first grade side, because (Tom) Starling is outstanding and they've even signed (Jayden) Brailey from Newcastle. 'He's happy prepared to buy into that system. 'How many hookers do the Broncos have? Are any of them lining up to get out now? Read hit back: 'Corey Paix doesn't have a contract for next year, so some of them are going.' Rothfield also hinted an inner 'circle' of Benji Marshall and co-captains Api Koroisau and Jarome Luai may have left some players feeling disgruntled. 'Have you heard the story that Jarome Luai and Api Koroisau are so tight with Benji Marshall — they've got that little circle of three — and there's a lot of younger players that don't feel part of that outfit. 'You know that was the situation with Galvin. I'm wondering if it had anything to do with these fellas as well. Read said 'I know Galvin felt a little bit locked out once they established this big three at the club.' Rothfield concluded: 'You know how highly regarded Onitoni Large is. He's the best schoolboy half going around. He didn't want a bar of the joint. I just think it's such a bad look when so much young talent all go.' Read said: 'I think Benji wanted Api and the club backed their coach.' The Tigers take on the Roosters on Sunday in round 16 and will be desperate to get a sixth win of the year. 'I hope Benji does finish strong,' Rothfield said. 'I think if they run last he'll probably lost his job. There are other people around like Willie Peters, who is breaking records over at Hull. He's coached at Newcastle and Souths and he's close to Shane Richardson. 'If they run last or even second last, they'll have to look at other options — not just for the way the football side is playing. That club needs to create an environment where people like Tallyn Da Silva and Lachlan Galvin want to play footy for the rest of their careers.' NRL 360 host Braith Anasta added: 'Amongst this drama and six losses in a row, they have got better. They are a much better team. But the next couple of months are critical.'

NRL signings: Tallyn Da Silva officially makes the move to Parramatta on long-term deal as the Roosters sign Dolphins flyer

Tallyn Da Silva could play his first game for Parramatta against Penrith next week after the talented hooker was granted an early release from the Wests Tigers to join the blue and golds effective immediately. Da Silva has signed until the end of the 2029 season in a huge coup for the Eels who have locked in an exciting spine headlined by Mitchell Moses and featuring young guns Isaiah Iongi and Joash Papalii. The decision comes on the back of the Tigers putting their faith in veteran Api Koroisau who remains one of the best hookers in the game, with his experience crucial for a club that needs veteran leadership. The 20-year-old was stuck playing on the bench and is good enough to be playing big minutes elsewhere. But it's a great result for Parramatta who have been crying out for a crafty No.9 ever since Reed Mahoney left after the 2022 Grand Final. 'Tallyn is a very talented hooker with great skills and a strong running game which complements our squad nicely,' Eels general manager of football Mark O'Neill said. 'His attributes match the style of football our head coach Jason Ryles is wanting to play, and we look forward to welcoming Tallyn and his family to our club.' Meanwhile, the Roosters have picked up Dolphins winger Junior Tupou until the end of the 2027 season. Tupou joined the Dolphins this year but only played the first two matches before he was demoted to NSW Cup, with Selwyn Cobbo's arrival next year leaving him on the outer. He returns to Sydney effective immediately after spending the first three years of his career at the Tigers. 'Junior is an exciting young player with size, speed and power,' Roosters head of recruitment Daniel Anderson said. 'He adds some terrific depth to our outside backs and we're looking forward to seeing his development over the next few years.'

Tough judge makes huge call as Dragons thwart late Eels comeback

There was very little between Parramatta and St George Illawarra on Saturday night. In the end, there might have just been a millimetre in it. With the game in the balance, Eels winger Josh Addo-Carr was flying down the left flank, seemingly setting up a try that would level the scores. 'The Foxx' flirted with the sideline and the touch judge raised his flag in the belief he put a toe on the white paint. It was a huge call and one that may have determined one of the most helter-skelter games of the season. In the end, the Dragons just hung on to record a thrilling 34-20 win at WIN Stadium. 'The reality was that we were a blade of grass away from blowing them away in the end,' said Parramatta coach Jason Ryles. 'But that's footy. Had we approached the first half better, we wouldn't have had to rely on that. Had Josh scored, we probably would have been talking about how good the fightback is.' Pressed on the touch judge's decision, Ryles said: 'There was tenths of millimetres in it. 'They have a hard enough job as it is, they don't need me adding to it.'

Tigers to lose a second young gun mid-season

Wests Tigers are set to lose a second young gun mid-season, with hooker Tallyn Da Silva poised to follow Lachlan Galvin out of the joint venture, likely to join Parramatta. AAP has been told the Tigers will release Da Silva from the final 18 months of his deal in time for him to join an NRL rival before the June 30 transfer deadline. The Campbelltown product is understood to have told the Eels they are his preferred destination but nothing official had been signed as of Sunday afternoon. Da Silva has shown promise across 22 games but his path to a regular starting spot became clouded when the Tigers indicated veteran Api Koirisau was their long-term hooker. The signing looms as a major boost for Jason Ryles's rebuilding Eels, who have struggled for stability at hooker since Reed Mahoney's departure for the 2023 season. Ryley Smith has shown potential in his rookie season but is not yet considered ready for 80 minutes every week, and is currently suspended. The Eels have a bye next weekend but could have Da Silva in the 17 for their rivalry clash with Penrith in round 19. Losing Da Silva will be disappointing for the Tigers, after he had been considered their hooker of the future. The club also lost fellow local boy Galvin, another superstar-in-waiting, to Canterbury a month ago. With a dearth of quality hookers on the market, Da Silva had attracted interest from North Queensland, Newcastle and Manly.

‘He could have been the future': Wests Tigers torched after yet another young gun eyes exit

The Wests Tigers have been dealt another 'kick in the guts', with young hooker Tallyn da Silva set to join a long list of juniors who have left the club in the past decade. Fox League's James Hooper reported on Wednesday night that Silva is a chance of being released from the club before the June 30 deadline, having met with three rival NRL coaches. Todd Payten, Jason Ryles, Anthony Seibold have already sat down with da Silva while the Tigers hooker is set to meet Newcastle coach Adam O'Brien on Saturday. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. Hooper described it as an 'absolute kick in the guts' for the Tigers considering the big-name juniors the club has failed to keep, headlined by James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses, Aaron Woods, Ryan Papenhuyzen, Josh Addo-Carr and, more recently, Lachlan Galvin. The Daily Telegraph's David Riccio, meanwhile, said da Silva 'could have been the future of the Wests Tigers'. But NRL 360 co-host Braith Anasta pushed back on the idea the Tigers could have done much more to keep da Silva while even Hooper conceded the development exposed the 'tough' reality for some of the league's struggling clubs. 'There's been so many false dawns at that club over the course of the last decade, off the back of three wooden spoons,' Hooper said. 'The local juniors are something that, they give you a bit of hope and they give you a bit of belief. You look at the stronger clubs, the Panthers are the best example, they've got the biggest junior nursery. They hum off the back of that procession line. 'For the Tigers to just continually get beat to the punch in that respect, it's a tough pill to swallow. '... I'll tell you what's really tough. If you look at the Storm when they had Cameron Smith and Harry Grant. They found a way to make that work. 'You see it at the stronger clubs at this point in time with the way the competition's set up, the teams that are down the bottom are just getting bent over all the time. They just get cherry-picked with all of their top talent.' While Anasta said it was far from a 'simple call' for the Tigers given da Silva didn't want to stick around for another year playing under Koroisau, he did add that using Melbourne as a comparison, younger players are happy to stick around sometimes at the NRL's powerhouse clubs. To prove his point, Anasta used one of his clients, Jonah Pezet, as an example. 'He's happy to stay there, do his apprenticeship, play under the players. He would have been playing first grade at any other club a year or two ago, but he sits back,' Anasta said. Da Silva is signed until the end of 2026 but has been granted permission to talk with rival clubs, with Tigers coach Benji Marshall recently admitting he was 'not sure' if the hooker would leave Concord before the June 30 transfer deadline.
