Iconic pair's era ends: Jay reunites with Veeru in death
1 2 Ahmedabad: A dominant presence will no longer be felt in Gir. Jay and Veeru, the iconic pair of lions who hunted and ruled together have reunited — in death. Over a month after Veeru's death from fatal fight injuries, his partner, Jay joined him, losing his battle with serious injuries suffered during an episode of in-fighting on June 7 that had also left buddy in death's arms. Forest officials announced Jay breathed his last on Tuesday afternoon. Veeru had died during treatment on June 11. "Jay too suffered serious injuries to his rear and was under treatment. We tried our best to save him. When modern medicine could not heal him, we even tried ayurveda, but in vain," said Mohan Ram, deputy conservator of forest headquarters, Sasan. The pair, always together for close to five years, were given the names for their bond which was as fierce as their dominance, just like the heroic pair of the film, 'Sholay'. "They were inseparable when alive, and could not be separated by death either, till they died," said a senior officer who has tracked the duo in the past. Department officials said the two lions were attacked separately by two different groups of males. Jay, attacked first by a group from the Kasia area, was brought in for treatment with serious injuries to his rear. "Left alone, Veeru was attacked by another group from the Khokar side, all in the protected Gir Sanctuary. The injuries were grave — Veeru had three to four deep bite marks in the rear — which proved fatal for him. He stopped eating and died on June 11," an official said. It was destiny that Jay ventured out alone while Veeru went in the other direction. The two had control from Malanka to Kasia Ness and Gadharia. The two males had about 15 females in their group, eight to nine sub-adults and about 14 cubs who were below one year," said a senior officer. Several documentaries have been made on the two lions who were also known for their good looks. "They were mainly spotted in grassy areas and named Jay-Veeru by the forest local staff as they were inseparable. However, the two had been fending off stiff competition for the past couple of months, but their unity kept other lions at bay," said another officer. "Jay-Veeru will remain everlasting names, remembered forever by beat guards and foresters alike," said a beat guard. Before Jay and Veeru, the Gir forest was home to another famous jodi, Dharam-Veer, whose tales of companionship were equally famous.

Jay and Veeru – Gir's inseparable duo that won the heart of visitors, PM Modi included
Their friendship was the stuff of legends. Perhaps, that is why they were named Jay and Veeru – after the iconic duo from 1975 blockbuster Sholay. For years, the two adult lions had been the pride of Gir National Park in Gujarat. Earlier this year, even Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the inseparable pair during his visit to Gir. But over a month ago, when they were not in each other's company, Jay and Veeru sustained serious injuries in separate territorial fights. While Veeru died on June 11, a few days after sustaining the wounds, Jay succumbed to its injuries on Tuesday. Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden of Gujarat Jaipal Singh said the two lions used to lead the same pride of big cats. 'Veeru had sustained very serious injuries and he died a few days after that. Whereas, Jay died today. The two were rescued and we made a lot of attempts to save them but could not succeed,' Singh said on Tuesday. Deputy Conservator of Forest, Wildlife Division (Sasan-Gir), Mohan Ram said that the two were prime adult males who used to accompany around 15 female lions. 'Their area was very big, (spanning) from tourism zone to non-tourism zone and from grassland to woodland and even fringe areas. They sustained injuries in territorial fights (with other lions) while they were not together,' he added. Rajya Sabha Parliamentarian and wildlife enthusiast Parimal Nathwani, in a statement, lamented the death of the two lions. Nathwani said, 'Deeply anguished by the passing away of Jay today. After a long and valiant battle for survival, Jay too departed. To every wildlife enthusiast who has witnessed the majestic presence of Jay-Veeru or heard tales of their bond — this loss is personal. Our Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi had also witnessed the royalty of Jay and Veeru during his recent visit to Gir.' A wildlife enthusiast who has been working with the forest department said that the two lions were named as Jay and Veeru as they had been moving around the forest with each other for a long time. In the words of Nathwani: 'Gir will never be the same without them. Legends may fade, but their spirit will echo through the forests they once ruled together.'

Jay Leno's Late Night Criticism: Monica Lewinsky Reacts
Jay Leno had great words about politics and late-night humor. The former Tonight Show host recently chatted with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute. The interviewer alluded to a 2014 George Mason University study, which he claimed showed that Jay was "roughly equally balanced between going after Republicans and taking aim at Democrats" (we'll get to why that's not exactly right later). "It was funny to me when I got hate letters," Jay replied. "That's how you get a whole audience." "Now, you have to be content with half the audience because you have to give your opinion," he continued. "I like to think that people come to a comedy show to kind of get away from the things, the pressures of life, wherever it might be. And I love political humor, don't get me wrong, but what happens (is) people wind up cozying too much to one side or the other." "Funny is funny. It's funny when you make fun of their side and they laugh at it. I don't think anybody wants to hear a lecture," the 75-year-old continued. "Why shoot for just half an audience all the time? Why not try to get the whole? I like to bring people into the big picture. I don't understand why you would alienate one particular group." The thing is, the original study doesn't quite show Jay as being quite partisan. In fact, it shows Jay's top target as being Bill Clinton, with 4,607 jokes. George W. Bush is behind him with 3,239, around 30% less. Out of the top five political figures Jay took aim at between 1992-2014, four of them were Democrats. Number seven on that list is Monica Lewinsky, who had 454 jokes told about her. Some subsequently responded by pointing out how, proportionally, Monica was a huge target for Jay. Monica herself even responded by reposting something telling: In response to a now-deleted X post on the topic, she further wrote, "leno made many, many cruel jokes about me (so much so that i was in the top 10 list of his targets… from all the years he was on the air)…" See folks, it's fine to alienate half your audience — as long as they're women!

Rotherham police sexually abused us too, say five grooming victims
Five grooming gang victims have come forward to claim that they were abused by police. One victim claimed she was raped from the age of 12 by a serving South Yorkshire Police officer who threatened to hand her back to her abusers if she did not comply. Three retired officers have been arrested on suspicion of historic sex offences dating back 30 years as part of a new criminal investigation into the involvement of the police in the Rotherham grooming scandal. Speaking to the BBC, one of the alleged victims said she was raped by a South Yorkshire Police officer in the back of a marked car. She said she had been abused by an Asian grooming gang, and the officer said he would hand her back to the men if she complained. She said: 'He knew where we used to hang out, he would request either oral sex or rape us in the back of the police car. 'In a world where you were being abused so much, being raped once [each time] was a lot easier than multiple rapes and I think he knew that.' The woman claims she was later forced into an abortion when she was 15, leading a social worker to contact the police. But she said the officer who turned up to interview her was the same one who had been abusing her and he then ripped up her statement in front of her. Another woman claimed that when she was a child, she would hear a police officer having sex with girls in exchange for drugs and money. Another said she witnessed a police officer supplying class A drugs to members of a grooming gang. Three other women, who have provided written testimonies, also claim they were beaten up by police officers when they were children, including once in a police cell. At least 1,400 girls were abused, mainly by Pakistani grooming gangs, in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. Details of the shocking abuse emerged in 2014 with the publication of Prof Alexis Jay's report. The latest witness statements form part of a civil claim being brought against South Yorkshire Police in an attempt to secure compensation for the victims. One of the women who is part of the claim has alleged that she was sexually abused by hundreds of men over five years by the age of 11. She said two police officers also sexually abused her, with one repeatedly tracking her down in his police car in Rotherham town centre. South Yorkshire Police has said it now has a dedicated team of detectives working on the case, who are pursuing all lines of inquiry. But Prof Jay told the BBC she believed the criminal investigation should be run by an independent police force or His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services. David Greenwood, of Switalskis Solicitors, which is representing the claimants, said he was concerned that officers from the force could be 'burying evidence or just not finding evidence deliberately', because they may know some of those involved in the allegations. It comes after Sir Keir Starmer bowed to pressure earlier this year and commissioned a national inquiry into the sexual exploitation of thousands of girls. The Prime Minister's about-turn followed a report by Baroness Casey, which found that police and council leaders had covered up the scale of Asian grooming gangs because they feared being called racist. In her 200-page report, Lady Casey accused officials of being 'in denial' about the scale of the grooming gangs problem and said lessons had not been learnt from crimes committed in Rotherham a decade ago. It also disclosed that asylum seekers and foreign nationals have been involved in a 'significant proportion' of live police investigations. The scandal re-entered the spotlight at the start of this year when Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, started repeatedly criticising Sir Keir and demanding a nationwide inquiry. In a statement the law firm representing the alleged victims said they had no faith in the force to investigate the allegations. A spokesman said: 'For years SYP resisted our requests for an investigation into the alleged criminality of police officers, despite us providing them with the accounts of survivors. 'Those that have suffered abuse in Rotherham have no faith that SYP will do a thorough job of investigating alleged abuse by their own officers. 'In addition, dealing with SYP is re-traumatising for them. Many of our clients refuse to report offences to SYP because they do not think they will be believed and because they were treated so badly in the past. 'This investigation must be handed over to an independent police force to ensure that survivors feel confident enough to come forward. 'The accounts we have heard, which we expect are only a fraction of the full scale of abuse, are utterly harrowing.'

Jay Slater's iPhone messages to friends and payment details revealed
The investigation into the disappearance and death of Oswaldtwistle teenager Jay Slater involved a comprehensive examination of his mobile phone. After Jay's body was brought back to Lancashire and placed under the coroner's authority, an inquiry into his death commenced which featured a detailed analysis of Jay's iPhone 14 by Lancashire Constabulary. This evidence was presented in May when the inquest started, before hearings were adjourned to permit additional attempts to locate missing witnesses. Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Higson carried out a forensic evaluation of Jay's device and produced a 16-page report outlining her findings. DCI Higson's report reveals that Jay's iPhone 14 was examined on April 25. The report's overview states that "there is evidence of usage since the phone was returned from the Spanish authorities, this interaction with the device has resulted in data being overwritten". The analysis of Jay's phone was limited to information between June 16 and June 18 and covered communication records, location information, health statistics and battery levels. Messages sent and received during this timeframe encompassed Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, WhatsApp and conventional calls/text messages, reports the Manchester Evening News. Jay sent a map showing his location to friend Bradley Geoghegan (Image: HM Coroner) The message from Brandon Hodgson to Jay Slater During the inquest into Jay's death, witnesses were quizzed on whether they knew that Jay had "run out of money". Ayub Qassim, one of the individuals who rented the Airbnb where Jay was last spotted, mentioned he "might have heard something" about Jay being skint but wasn't certain. Jay's mobile showed two unsuccessful transactions at 9.10pm and 9.11pm on the eve of his vanishing. The failed payments, amounting to €320 and €160, were attempted with INFISEN INVERSIONES. At 9.26pm, Brandon Hodgson pinged Jay a text saying: "Get that 2 ton out for me as well bro". A spreadsheet showing the decreasing battery life of Jay's phone Later, Brandon fired off another message to Jay, pressing him to return and remarking that Jay was "off his barnet". At 6.09am on Monday June 17, Jay sent a snap of his whereabouts to his friend Bradley Geoghegan. An hour later, at 7.08am, Jay posted a video on Snapchat showcasing the vicinity of the Airbnb in Masca, as reported by Lancs Live. Immediately after, Jay shared another brief, seven-second clip on Snapchat, also depicting the area near the Airbnb. The spot was pinpointed using GPS data. Jay's mobile disclosed that between 7.33am and 8.50am, there was a flurry of incoming and outgoing messages with his pals Lucy, Bradley, and Brandon. The final bit of activity on Jay's phone was clocked at 8.50:37. The report also illustrates, via a spreadsheet, the dwindling battery life of Jay's iPhone. At 8.27am it had three per cent, then two per cent at 8.33am and one per cent at 8.52am when it is believed that the mobile died. The Irish Mirror's Crime Writers Michael O'Toole and Paul Healy are writing a new weekly newsletter called Crime Ireland. Click here to sign up and get it delivered to your inbox every week In her conclusion, DCI Higson stated: "There is frequent communication and activity through the phone throughout the 16th to 17th June until 8.51am following which there is no activity until the device is located and examined by Spanish authorities. "Jay makes reference to being incapacitated (unspecified whether through drink or drugs). Attempts were made by Jay's associates to locate him in order to return him home, he made it clear he wished to stay out and did not reply to multiple queries concerning his whereabouts. "There is no evidence of any recorded health activity on Jay's iPhone 14 after 8.49am on 17th June 2024. Battery life data corroborates accounts that Jay had stated his battery was running out of charge. "The last recorded location data is consistent with the area of the island in which he was found. There is no evidence of any threat of harm towards Jay or indication that he was in fear for his safety."
