LSU baseball signee Quentin Young selected in second round of MLB Draft

LSU baseball lost another signee in the MLB Draft on Sunday night as Quentin Young was selected with the No. 54 overall pick by the Minnesota Twins. Media and scouts were high on Young, often mocking him inside the top 50 picks. The shortstop does damage at the plate and in the field thanks to his arm strength and agility. Advertisement The Tigers most likely expected Young to turn professional rather than enter college. The MLB listed Young as the No. 37 prospect in this year's draft class. He was the third incoming freshman to be picked Sunday, following Jaden Fauske and Brady Ebel. LSU signed the best high school recruiting class of the cycle, meaning most of the players had a chance to hear their names called on night one of the draft. This comes with the territory when you recruit the caliber of player Jay Johnson and LSU does. With Young off the board this early, he's expected to join the Twins' minor league system. LSU's Jay Johnson Says Kade Anderson Should Next Pitch for the Washington Nationals

LSU's Jay Johnson Says Kade Anderson Should Next Pitch for the Washington Nationals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. LSU won a nail-biter in Omaha. A first inning RBI single by Steven Milam was all the scoring in the game. Advertisement After the game, Tigers' head coach Jay Johnson talked about his team's effort in winning the opener. 'Great performance tonight by our team, especially Kade. Special performance. Not taking it for granted; that's what we've seen all year. He's the best pitcher in the country. And did it again tonight. That's been on the regular, every Game 1 of the entire season. So I'm glad he did that tonight, so everybody got to see what we've seen and known for an entire season. Other things I thought were great, in the first inning, Derek Curiel, 0-2, draws the walk. Ethan Frey moves the ball against a tough pitcher. Steven gets down to two strikes and hits a ball hard and low through the middle of the field, that he's better at that than everybody else in the country. That's all he needed. Couple other things I'd like to point out is Luis Hernandez behind the plate tonight was spectacular. I mean, this guy was striking out a lot of guys, and some of them were on chase pitches -- the block, the recovery, the tag or the throw down to first base to not let any weird plays kind of happen. And then Michael Braswell's defense at third base was a difference maker in the game,' said Johnson. Johnson also talked about starting pitcher Kade Anderson's ability to pitch out of some early jams and turn it into a complete game shutout. Johnson said, 'I think as far as the pitching with traffic, I think I heard Coach Savage say it earlier this week, it's the College World Series. You're going to pitch with runners on base. It's the best teams in the country, and that's one of the best teams in the country. They do a great job of finding their way on base. And they did a few times tonight. He told me in the third inning, I just went down to say a little something to him, and he's, like, I'll settle in. And I was, like, nobody knows that better than me…I felt like they weren't seeing him, they weren't picking him up. I know the human being. That's who you want on the mound in the ninth.' Advertisement Johnson also made his feelings clear on the upcoming MLB draft. The Washington Nationals have the first overall pick. 'He's the best pitcher in college baseball. I mean, we had the best pitcher on the planet two years ago in a similar situation. I felt like Kade's had a very similar season to that. And that's how you get here. I'm really proud of him. And I think the commonality between the two is the person, the character, the toughness, the team-first attitude…I mean, his next pitch should be for someplace in the Washington Nationals organization. It's not close. And they usually draft really well. And he's the best player in the country. There's nobody closer to the Major Leagues than that right now. But I don't think you can quantify it -- Paul Skenes, Joe Burrow, that type of deal,' said Johnson. LSU Baseball Loses Talented Outfield to Transfer Portal

LSU Baseball Loses Talented Outfield to Transfer Portal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The LSU Tigers have lost Ashton Larson to the transfer portal. The Tigers just won the 2025 National Championship, but that doesn't make them immune from transfer portal losses. Ashton Larson, an LSU outfielder, announced on Monday that he is entering the transfer portal. LSU Tigers head coach Jay Johnson (3) walks to the dugout before the game against the UCLA Bruins at Charles Schwab Branscombe Larson ranked as the No. 13 OF and No. 78 overall prospect in his class by Perfect Game and was a 20th round selection in the 2023 MLB Draft, but decided to forgo the MLB and come to LSU. Advertisement In his freshman season, Larson saw a good bit of playing time. He appeared in 53 games, starting 40, and batted .298 (42-141) with nine doubles, three homers and 16 RBIs. In SEC play, he led the team in batting average (.337) and was named to the 2024 SEC All-Freshman Team. In 2025, LSU's outfield was very crowded with guys like Derek Curiel, Chris Stanfield, Josh Pearson and Jake Brown all fighting for starting spots. Larson became the odd man out. He appeared in 34 games, but only took 39 at bats compared to 141 as a freshman. He recorded 10 hits (.256 batting average) and two homers as a sophomore. With Pearson definitely leaving and Stanfield potentially heading to the MLB, it felt like Larson might have been able to stay and potentially start next year, but he decided to hit the portal and take his chances somewhere else. In a tweet on Monday morning, D1 Baseball's Kendall Rogers said he'd keep his eye on some Big 12 schools. Larson went to high school in Kansas, so Kansas and Kansas State could be two schools to watch in his recruitment. LSU Baseball Lands Prized Lefty in Transfer Portal

LSU Baseball Lands Prized Lefty in Transfer Portal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The LSU Tigers have added another left hander to their pitching staff for next season, gaining a commitment from former Oregon lefty, Santiago Garcia. Advertisement Jay Johnson has been on a recruiting tear since the Tigers won their eighth national title over a week ago. Today, they added their third left handed pitcher of the portal season, Santiago Garcia. Tigers Head Coach Jay Johnson as the LSU Tigers take on Alabama Baseball in Baton Rouge, Clause / USA Today Garcia originally committed to Central Arizona Community College where he spent one season. He went 1-1 as a freshman while throwing 23.2 innings with a 3.04 ERA while striking out 38 batters. He entered the portal after his freshman year and transferred to Oregon. In his lone year with the Ducks, Garcia made 24 appearances and threw 30.0 innings where he posted a 4.20 ERA and struck out 40 batters. However, he was very susceptible to the long ball, giving up seven homers. He entered the portal for the second time in as many seasons after the Ducks' season ended in their home Regional. Advertisement Garcia gives Nate Yeskie and Jay Johnson a project, but one that has a ton of upside. If they can work on his command (allowed 18 walks in 30 innings last season) and get it under control, he has the tools to be a really good bullpen arm next season. Garcia also has a unique tie to LSU, having been high school teammates with fellow New Mexico native, Steven Milam, who will be LSU's starting shortstop again next season. We'll see how big of an impact Garcia has in his first season in Baton Rouge, but with some work, he could be an impact player.
