Monsoon revival in M'wada gives new life to kharif crops

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: After a subdued monsoon phase through much of July, parts of Marathwada witnessed a revival in rainfall over the past 24 hours, ending Thursday morning. Notable showers were recorded in Parbhani (34mm), Beed and Jalna (27mm each) and Hingoli (14mm). The revival of monsoon in parts of Marathwada has given a new lease of life to kharif crops, as poor rainfall conditions caused stress among crops in many areas, adversely affecting growth and productivity. The July rainfall tally for Marathwada, comprising eight districts, increased to 57 mm, with the region still showing a 44% rainfall deficit. Since June 1, Marathwada reported an average of 163 mm showers, with a monsoon deficiency of 31%, according to official data. Notably, the poor run of monsoon in many parts of Marathwada delayed sowing processes in some pockets of the region. While farmers are yet to start sowing on 17% of the target area in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar agricultural division, in Latur division no sowing was reported on 14% of the target cultivation area for kharif crops. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indian Investors Are Buying These Dubai Apartments—Here's Why Binghatti Developers FZE Explore Undo Activist Jayaji Suryawanshi said many Marathwada farmers who began sowing are forced to irrigate crops on their own due to the lack of desired rainfall. "Such scenes in the peak of monsoon are definitely worrisome. There have been cases where farmers are contemplating re-sowing. Strong revival of monsoon is necessary for the survival of the kharif season," he said. As per IMD's forecast, many parts of Marathwada are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall at isolated places, with chances of a strong revival of monsoon. Irrigation department began releasing water from both canal systems of Jayakwadi dam to benefit kharif crops in command areas from Wednesday. By Thursday evening both canals were releasing water at the speed of 200cusecs.

Marathwada rainfall deficit rises to 25%, farmers await revival of rain

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The rainfall deficit in Marathwada rose to 25% in the current monsoon season by Sunday morning, as the region recorded an average of 3mm rainfall over the past 24 hours. Since June 1, the region has received 127mm of rain, accounting for 75% of the expected showers, according to the official data. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that a widespread and strong revival of the monsoon in Marathwada is unlikely in the near future, with prospects of light to moderate rainfall confined to isolated areas. Several regions in Marathwada have been placed under yellow alert, signalling the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. Farmers in Marathwada are awaiting the return of rain for the survival of their kharif crops. Farmers' rights activist Jayaji Suryawanshi noted that many farmers might need to undertake re-sowing due to the challenging weather conditions. "Survival of crops is difficult in the current weather conditions. Many farmers complain of failed sowing. The vagaries of the monsoon are once again taking a heavy toll on the farming community in Marathwada," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Show Off Your Talent: Enter the Ultimate Creator Contest!
