Why this week cruelly exposes wooden spoon favourite's halfback hoodoo
As Titans star Jayden Campbell declared his days as a fullback were over, with his future now in the halves, the man he replaced will highlight a concerning carousel the Gold Coast club needs to rectify. Tanah Boyd was released from Parkwood at the end of last year to take up a deal with the New Zealand Warriors, after managing just 23 wins from 67 appearances as both the side's No.7 and in stints coming off the bench. The Keebra Park product will make his first NRL appearance for his new side this week after Luke Metcalf ruptured his ACL, after coming up with 16 try assists and 10 linebreak assists from 13 New South Wales Cup wins this year. In doing so, Boyd ensures the competition's top four teams all field a halfback who was discarded from the Titans. Bulldogs general Toby Sexton, Melbourne superstar Jahrome Hughes, and Canberra leader Jamal Fogarty have all found success since being let go, while the Gold Coast have struggled to lock down a chief playmaker since Scott Prince's final appearance on the Glitter Strip in 2012. Loading Albert Kelly, Kane Elgey, Ashley Taylor, Tyrone Roberts, Ryley Jacks and Aidan Sezer have joined the aforementioned quartet in coming and going, while Cameron Cullen and utilities Daniel Mortimer and Will Smith were also infrequently used. It makes Campbell's retention as he comes off contract at the end of 2026 so crucial. But with the Perth Bears to join the competition the following year, the club could face a battle for his services. However, the son of Titans great Preston Campbell said he was yet to consider his long-term future.

Cruel blow for Titans and Queensland as State of Origin hopeful ruled out
The Gold Coast Titans were reportedly left fuming on Sunday night when Jayden Campbell was ruled to have a category 1 concussion, despite passing his head injury assessment in the dressing rooms. And it could have State of Origin ramifications for Billy Slater and Queensland. Campbell was ordered off the field in the first half of the Titans' 36-20 loss to Parramatta, after an innocuous incident in which he appeared to cop a knock from a teammate. The Titans halfback lay prone on the ground for a few seconds, which resulted in the independent doctor ruling him a category 1. The cat-1 ruling meant Campbell was automatically ruled out for the rest of the game, and will now miss Gold Coast's Round 17 clash with the Cowboys due to the 11-day stand down protocol. But the Titans reportedly felt the independent doctor acted too hastily, especially after Campbell passed his head injury assessment in the sheds. Jake Duke of Fox League reported the Titans were filthy that Campbell had been ruled out straight away, and couldn't come back into the action. Unless the Gold Coast can prove that Campbell didn't suffer a concussion - and that his initial symptoms were not indicative of concussion - and he passed all subsequent testing, he won't be playing next week either. Slater will pick his team for the series decider at the end of Round 17, and with Campbell not playing he won't be able to press his case for an unlikely call-up. Many have suggested Campbell would be the perfect bench utility in Origin - or a valuable 18th man at the very least. Should the Maroons suffer an injury in the back-line between now and Origin 3, it's not inconceivable that Campbell would come into contention. Slater picked Kurt Mann as his bench utility in Game 2, and Ezra Mam as 18th man. But Campbell actually covers more positions than Mam, and with the Titans on the bye in Round 18 (when Origin players aren't allowed to play club footy), he might have been a more desirable selection so Mam was available for the Broncos. RELATED: Reece Walsh in concerning scenes amid State of Origin calls NRL fans all say same thing after Latrell Mitchell stunner The loss of Campbell on Sunday night proved costly for the Titans, who are now dead-last with four wins and 10 losses. They had the same record as the Eels heading into their Round 16 clash, but Parramatta have now jumped two points ahead. Titans coach Des Hasler said Tom Weaver will replace Campbell at halfback next week. "He's OK," Hasler said about Campbell. "We've got young Tommy Weaver there. Tommy will come in and fill that role, at first thought anyway, if JC (Campbell), which is more than likely, is not to play (against the Cowboys)." Campbell's absence left the goal-kicking duties to second-rower Beau Fermor, who had never kicked a goal at first-grade level before Sunday night. He managed only one from three attempts, and Hasler might be forced to make a change in that department against the Cowboys. with AAP

Security fears amplified after axed Queensland Origin star Daly Cherry-Evans is grabbed by a fan after night to forget on the Gold Coast
The NRL is expected to beef up security following a concerning incident involving Manly skipper Daly Cherry-Evans on the Gold Coast. A supporter - dressed in Sea Eagles gear - managed to make his way onto Cbus Super Stadium post game on Friday night where he grabbed the recently axed Queensland Origin halfback. Cherry-Evans was visibly stunned before security tackled the man and removed him from the venue. It followed a night to forget for the veteran halfback, who was poor against the Titans. Plenty of footy fans anticipated Cherry-Evans would have a point to prove after the Maroons skipper was overlooked for game two in Perth, but he was outplayed by his opposite Jayden Campbell. Former Manly star Kieran Foran turned back the clock with a vintage performance for the hosts - and their coach Des Hasler would have been delighted to get a win against the club who sacked him in 2022. Post game, Cherry-Evans was pressed on reports from Sam Walker's manager the Roosters have gone cold on signing him for 2026 and beyond due to his alarming dip in form. 'I don't sort of understand that stuff,' Cherry-Evans said. 'Sort of stay out of it. All I can do is control my footy at will be speculation.' Sea Eagles coach Anthony Siebold conceded his team were off the pace. 'We missed far too many tackles which is an attitude thing,' he said. 'We started well in the first 10 minutes and after that we were outplayed and couldn't get back into the contest. 'It comes back to attitude and being consistent individually and collectively.' Compounding the poor performance was backrower Haumole Olakau'atu suffering a dislocated shoulder when attempting to score a second half try. He is tipped to face a lengthy stint on the sidelines. Questions also need to asked about the fitness of fullback Tom Trbojevic, who was well below his best on the Glitter Strip. Rumours continue to swirl 'Turbo' is battling another serious hamstring injury, but the club have been coy about his fitness.
