Aliceville man dies after Tuscaloosa police pursuit ends in crash

A 31-year-old man was killed after a July 17 traffic stop by Tuscaloosa police resulted in a pursuit by officers that ended in a crash. Jaylen Reed of Aliceville died in the wreck, said Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit. At around 7 p.m., a Tuscaloosa police patrol unit attempted to stop a vehicle for several traffic violations on Cousette Street near its overpass with Interstate 359. Kennedy said the vehicle immediately fled at a high rate of speed. The vehicle crossed through several intersections, left the roadway and struck a ditch and culvert near Tamko Building Products. The vehicle sustained extreme damage, he said. More: Accessing local journalism is even easier with the News app The driver, later identified as Reed, was injured and unresponsive. Medical aid was rendered, and Reed was taken to DCH Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Kennedy said. Reed was the lone occupant of the vehicle. No other vehicles were struck or involved in the crash. Since the wreck occurred during a Tuscaloosa Police Department pursuit, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit was called to handle the investigation. Investigators and supervisors not affiliated with TPD will conduct an investigation, with the assistance of the Northport Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit. Multiple witnesses were interviewed, and several sources of video were obtained, according to Kennedy. The time from the patrol unit activating its lights to initiate the stop until the crash was less than 30 seconds, he said. The driver was later found to have multiple active felony warrants. Texans 2025 draft pick profile: DB Jaylen Reed

Texans 2025 draft pick profile: DB Jaylen Reed A clone of CJGJ is headed to Houston this fall. One can't have too many defensive standouts, right? Despite adding former Eagles do-it-all defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson this offseason in a trade surrounding Kenyon Green, the Houston Texans wanted to add another member to their "no-fly zone" defense. After adding USC defensive back Jaylin Smith at pick No. 97, the Texans traded up in Day 3 to select Penn State safety Jaylen Reed with the 187th pick. A three-year starter for the Nittany Lions, Reed became an anchor for Penn State's backend in coverage this fall. Helping the Big Ten program reach the College Football Playoff semifinal, Reed totaled a career-high 97 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown against Wisconsin. Here's a quick rundown on Reed: The Basics Height: 6-foot Weight: 210 pounds Age: 22 From: Detroit, Michigan Breakdown "Reed is a fantastic fit for the Texans as an athletic, downhill safety who hits hard as a blitzer and in run defense. He offers good size at 6-foot and 212 pounds and has the tools to cover. He'll need to improve his technique to become a starter at safety but should at least be a special teams ace for the Texans early on." - Ayrton Ostly Lance Zierlein's Scouting Report Reed has NFL size and good overall production as a three-year starter but there are concerns on tape. He plays with natural instincts and route awareness to make plays on the ball but is too inconsistent in finding where he needs to be in coverage. He doesn't run well enough to play over the top or handle certain targets in man coverage. He's physical enough as a run supporter but needs to improve his approach as an open-field tackler. Reed is best suited to play as a backup safety in downhill zone coverages. RAS Score Grade: B+ "From a scheme fit, it's great. Reed said he models his game after Gardner-Johnson, which is a good thing since he'll likely serve as his backup this fall. Better in coverage than in space, he'll need to improve as a tackle and play with a more balanced approach, but he screams "DeMeco Ryans' type." By the sixth round, if a player can add special-teams value, it's a solid selection." - Texans Wire's Cole Thompson Highlights

Penn State safety Jaylen Reed drafted by Houston Texans

Penn State safety Jaylen Reed drafted by Houston Texans Houston Texans use sixth-round pick to draft Penn State defensive star Jaylen Reed. The wait is finally over for Penn State safety Jaylen Reed. Reed was selected by the Houston Texans with a sixth-round draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon. Reed is coming off a 2024 season in which he saw his role increase a bit in light of an injury to a teammate, and he handled the job well. Reed was a second-team All-Big Ten player for the Nittany Lions in 2024 and a key player helping Penn State play for the Big Ten championship and reach the College Football Playoff semifinal. The Detroit, Michigan native committed to Penn State in the Class of 2021 and declared for the NFL draft following Penn State's playoff run this past January, which was to be expected. Reed finished his college football career with 181 total tackles, including 101 solo tackles. He had 3.5 total sacks and five interceptions in his career with the Nittany Lions. Reed is the fourth Penn State player to be selected in the NFL draft. He joins first-round draft picks edge rusher Abdul Carter (no. 3, New York Giants) and tight end Tyler Warren (no. 14, Indianapolis Colts). Fellow safety Kevin Winston Jr. was a third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans. You can check out our updated NFL Draft tracker for more on Penn State's 2025 NFL draft class.
