Land Rover unveils new 1980s classic style 4x4 but there's one big catch
Many of the original Land Rover competition vehicles from the iconic Camel Trophy events, which ran from 1981 to 2000, are still on the road today and going strong Land Rover has launched a beast of a car that retro fans will love - but the brand-spanking new model comes with one significant drawback. Paying tribute to a legendary design from the 1980s, celebrated for its extraordinary off-road performance in some of the world 's toughest environments, Land Rover has unveiled a new Defender Trophy Edition. It is an homage to the Camel Trophy vehicles from 40 years ago, complete with matching accessories and a retro livery. The Camel Trophy itself began in 1980, originally featuring three German teams driving Jeeps across the Amazon Basin. Described as 'neither a race nor a rally' by Iain Chapman, the event's director for over a decade, the Camel Trophy was an off-roading expedition where participating teams tested their 4x4 driving and mechanical skills, endurance, courage, stamina, perseverance and resilience against some of the most challenging natural conditions on the planet. After the inaugural event, organisers partnered with Land Rover and secured primary sponsorship from tobacco company Camel, giving the event its iconic name. Over the next twenty years, the competition took place in challenging locations such as Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Madagascar, Samoa, Siberia, Malaysia, and many other demanding terrains. Throughout the event's history, a wide range of Land Rover vehicles participated — Range Rover, Land Rover Series III, Land Rover 90, Land Rover 110, Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Discovery and Freelander. All of which were painted in the distinctive 'Sandglow' yellow associated with the Camel brand. This signature colour is one of two livery options available for the new Defender Trophy Edition, which will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which takes place from Thursday, July 10 to Sunday, July 13. However, there is a significant catch with this luxury retro revival model — the price. The new Trophy Edition is offered exclusively as the mid-size, five-door Defender 110, featuring unique 20-inch alloy wheels and a choice between the aforementioned Deep Sandglow Yellow — evoking the Camel Trophy heritage — or Keswick Green. Both versions include the option of a contrasting black bonnet, wheel arches, roof and black leather interior. For those seeking even more authenticity, Land Rover offers a Trophy Edition accessory pack for £4,995. This features a roof rack, retractable roof ladder (for easier access to roof-mounted gear), air-intake snorkel (for water crossings) and classic-style mud flaps, as well as gloss black side panniers providing 'extra space for muddy, wet or sandy items'you would rather not store in the boot. Land Rover said the Trophy Edition, which omits the Camel name for advertising reasons, is a celebration of the brand's 'rich history of adventure challenges', noting that the classic yellow vehicles are 'synonymous with Defenders used on international Trophy-style events'. The price for the Trophy Edition starts at £89,810, a notable increase over the £62,795 base for a standard Defender 110. While the Trophy Edition's price is steep, it is only half the cost of a similar commemorative model produced by Land Rover Classic in 2021. That limited run included just 25 examples of the old Defender, each inspired by the Camel Trophy and featuring period-correct liveries and modifications. Despite a price tag of £195,000 per car, the Works V8 Trophy line sold out in just three days, prompting Land Rover to build another 25 units to meet demand. And it's worth noting — many of the original competition Land Rovers from Camel Trophy events, which ran from 1981 to 2000, are still on the road today and going strong.

Relief for travellers: Govt announces ₹3,000 annual toll pass on NHs
Addressing long-standing concerns of national highway users about high toll fees, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on Wednesday announced an annual toll pass that will eliminate repeated toll deductions for personal passenger vehicles. 'In a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel, we are introducing a Fastag-based annual pass priced at ₹3,000, effective from August 15. Valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips — whichever comes first — this pass is designed exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, Jeeps, and vans,' Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said. A dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be made available on the RajmargYatra application (app) as well as on the official websites of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and MoRTH. 'This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60-kilometre (km) radius and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction. By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimising disputes at toll plazas, the annual pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners,' Gadkari said. The annual pass is available only on the RajmargYatra mobile app and the NHAI website, and will reflect in the user's existing Fastag upon completion of payment. A dedicated link for the facility will be issued soon. The pass is valid only at national highway and national expressway fee plazas, the ministry said. At fee plazas on expressways, state highways, etc. managed by state governments or local bodies, the Fastag will operate as a regular Fastag, and applicable user fee charges may apply. According to the ministry, the pass is non-transferable and is valid only for the vehicle on which the Fastag is affixed and registered. Using it on another vehicle will lead to deactivation. According to the ministry's gazette notification, the rate for the pass will be subject to revision each year, in accordance with current revision standards, which are linked to the Wholesale Price Index. Experts say the policy will bring major relief to users, while its impact on highway operating companies will be minimal. 'The introduction of the annual toll pass will enhance convenience for travellers by streamlining passage through toll plazas. Given that the average passenger vehicle covers roughly 10,000 km per year — most of which occurs outside national highways — the direct impact on toll operators is expected to be minimal. However, this move brings additional advantages, including reduced congestion, improved operational efficiency, and smoother travel patterns. For frequent travellers who use toll roads for more than 2,500 to 3,000 km annually, the pass offers considerable cost savings and added convenience, making long-distance travel more seamless,' said Jagannarayan Padmanabhan, senior director and global head, consulting, Crisil Intelligence.

Auto workers union president retaliated against top officer, monitor says
The federal monitor overseeing the United Auto Workers union determined that UAW President Shawn Fain retaliated against Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock by reassigning some of her duties last year, according to a report released on Tuesday. The monitor, New York attorney Neil Barofsky , opened the investigation in February 2024 to review allegations around the two officers' actions, including that Mock said she had faced retaliation for her refusal or reluctance to authorize certain expenditures for Fain's office. "Fain acted on a premeditated plan to take action against Mock," the report stated, adding that the union president retaliated against her because she refused "to grant exceptions to the strict policy restrictions governing the expenditure of Union resources." The UAW did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mock also did not immediately respond to a request for a comment. In the report, the monitor called for the union's executive board to reinstate the various responsibilities stripped from Mock, which included purchasing, benefits and pensions. The secretary-treasurer was also previously accused of obstructing union operations and seeking to influence board votes, claims the monitor said were unfounded. Barofsky's latest report is damaging to Fain, a symbol of union power resurgence across the country during a 2023 strike against the Detroit Three automakers , Ford Motor, General Motors and Stellantis, maker of Ram trucks and Jeeps. The monitor was appointed in 2021 following a years-long corruption scandal that resulted in the federal convictions of several former leaders. He has since regularly released reports on his team's investigations into the union's practices. Tuesday's report is the twelfth from the monitor's office.

LAFAYETTE, IN — On Saturday, June 21, riders from across the region will gather to show solidarity, raise awareness and generate funding to end veteran homelessness in the fourth No Hero Should Be Homeless Motorcycle + Jeep Ride. From transportation and employment readiness to home essentials and rental assistance, LTHC's program fills the critical gaps that housing vouchers alone cannot. 'Far too many veterans can't afford housing. This ride is a way for us to not only raise awareness of our veterans who are experiencing homelessness, but to gain additional resources to help,' Jennifer Layton, president and CEO of LTHC Homeless Services, said in the release. After the ride, participants can return to the Hunter's Moon lot to enjoy food and a sense of community among those who care deeply about ending homelessness for veterans in Region IV. The event is sponsored by A&D Biker & Jeep Ministries, with hospitality provided by Boilermaker Hospitality through Purdue University. Additional support comes from Doug Pierce, Milestone Contractors, The National Group, Purdue Federal Credit Union, Valero, and the JR Kelly Company. Additionally, the Veteran Services Program is funded in part through grants from CenterPoint Energy, the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through their Supportive Services for Veterans and Families. Jeeps roll into semi-state since 2007
DUBOIS COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — The Dubois County Jeeps baseball team is heading to semi-state for the first time since 2007. Jeeps head coach Luke Woolems says the team can feel the excitement. 'There's a difference between excitement and nerves,' Woolems said. Excitement and anticipation to do something the school has never done before. But around practice, Northeast Dubois is treating it like it's just another day in May. 'I feel calmer than I have been the entire tournament at this point,' Woolems said. 'I think the players feeding off that and they are relaxed.' 'I know for sure we are going to walk in there confident and so there's going to be nothing to it,' senior Aiden Sheetz said. But there is something to what the Jeeps are doing recently. Winners of six straight games, Northeast Dubois have won those games by a combined score of 73 – 7. The Jeeps senior slugger Aidan Sheetz is a big reason why. Going into postseason play, Sheetz had one homerun on the season now that total is up to four. Three long balls in just four games. When you ask him what's working once again it's about staying calm under pressure. 'I'm confident at the plate and I have a message on my wrist I read every time I go up to bat,' Sheetz said. 'What's that message if you don't mind me asking It's Philippians four verses six through seven it says don't be anxious about anything just leave it up to Him. That's what I do every time.' Leaving that anxiety behind might be tough when you are on the doorstep of the biggest win in school history. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
