Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez: Should Regular, Not-So-Rich Indian Couples Sign A Prenup?
Last Updated: Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez wedding: Can regular couples sign prenups? What can the terms be? Would it put non-earning spouse at a disadvantage? Is it legally valid in India? Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez wedding: As the details and pictures of the lavish celebrations of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to his fiancée Lauren Sánchez in Venice come out, there's also the buzz of a ' prenuptial agreement or prenup" around it. The couple reportedly married in the US weeks before their lavish $10 million (approximately Rs 388-460 crore) wedding celebration in Venice on June 26, featuring a star-studded guest list. While Bezos and Sanchez may or may not have chosen to sign a prenuptial agreement, it is a crucial document which details what each person will take away in terms of assets, debts and spousal support should the marriage end in divorce or death. Bezos — the founder of Amazon whose net worth Forbes estimates to be north of $200 billion — has a lot of wealth to protect, should his second marriage go south. But chances are his assets and estate are already structured and professionally managed in a way that they would never become marital assets, two attorneys who specialise in prenups told CNN. The curiosity is only around the payout she would get if they divorced or he predeceases her, in case they signed a prenup. But for everyone else wondering if they should get a prenup before saying 'I do," there are many factors to consider for both partners. Do regular couples sign prenups? For one, the stigma around prenups as a sign that at least one partner doesn't trust the incoming spouse or is worried the marriage wouldn't last has gone. CNN, in a special piece on prenups, noted the changing trend. Illinois-based divorce and marital attorney Gail O'Connor, founder of O'Connor Family Law, told CNN she has seen a huge jump in couples seeking them out. 'Millennials want to be very financially independent. So there is this idea of people getting married later and thinking, 'I've worked hard for this and want to protect it,'" O'Connor said. But the 'it" doesn't have to mean billions or even millions. It could just mean you've worked for a decade and built up savings, investments and stock options. Or, conversely, she said she has seen a lot of couples where one person has a large debt load — for example, $100,000 or more in education loans. 'And their partner wants to be protected from that," O'Connor said. Why do prenups matter and to whom? Prenups are most critical where one partner owns a business. 'It's not about the actual level of wealth but what the assets are when a couple marries," Jacqueline Newman, managing partner of Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein in New York told CNN. While a business may not be worth much at the time of wedding, it might grow greatly during the marriage, which also happened in case of Bezos during his first marriage to MacKenzie Scott. Prenups also matter to: What can regular couples include in a prenup? Whatever you want. Newman said a regular couple can opt for a prenup that: Asserts that any assets or debt in one person's name goes with that person at the end of the marriage. Any assets or debts in both partners' names are split. A simple prenup might also just focus on a single asset and how it will be treated if the marriage dissolves. Could address the issue of how one partner's debt is paid off during the marriage. For instance, if any jointly held marital assets are used to make one partner's debt payments, that partner may need to reimburse the joint account. What would couples need to get a prenup? Financial disclosures O'Connor told CNN she asks her clients to give her proof of their assertions by way of their most recent tax returns, W2s, stock option grants, business valuations, and bank and brokerage statements. 'You don't want to build a contract subject to a successful attack. The more disclosure you have, the better," she said. Prenups in India prenuptial agreements to understand the intentions of the parties involved during divorce proceedings, particularly in cases where there is a dispute over financial matters. While states like Goa recognise such contracts under the Portuguese Civil Code, the rest of India views marriage predominantly through the lens of personal laws. The Hindu Marriage Act views marriage as a sacrament rather than a contract. The nikahnama (a prenuptial agreement in Islamic law) is an exception, as it is recognised as a part of Muslim marriage and can be considered valid if it complies with Islamic law and doesn't contradict it. Other options for Indian couples Couples may explore other options like creating family trusts or trusts for each family member to manage assets and provide some level of financial security. Some lawyers draft 'quasi-prenuptial" or 'postnuptial" agreements, which are not legally binding but can be used to record the couple's understanding on various financial and other matters, potentially influencing court decisions or preventing false claims. According to the Indian Contract Act, 1872, a valid contract requires consideration, something of value exchanged between parties. As prenups typically involve no such exchange before marriage, they are often deemed unenforceable. However, there are exceptions where courts have upheld these agreements when they focus on property distribution rather than marital dissolution. It also helps in terms of alimony or maintenance discussion if the marriage is dissolved. PICS: Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez Step Out for Lavish Reception, Kiss Publicly for First Time Since Wedding
With pomp and pleasure, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez got married on June 27 in an extravagant lineup of events in Venice, Italy. The attendance of industry mates like Bill Gates and Sam Altman upped the status quo of the event, while the guest list included names like Sydney Sweeney, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, and Kylie Jenner brought the glam. Just a day later, the loved-up couple stepped out, waving from the balcony of their hotel and then taking off in a water taxi to what is said to be the last event of their 3-day festivities. Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez Wedding Closes off with Reception The newly married couple waved at the cameras and exchanged a kiss atop Venetian waters. The former journalist kept her accessories to a minimum, letting her presence do the talking. Only a pair of dangly, sparkling earrings and her massive wedding ring adorned her finger. The bride went for a figure-hugging, neck-plunging pink Atelier Versace fit, carrying a black clutch that boasted her new last name on it. Meanwhile, the groom kept it classy with an all-black appearance, going for a tailored suit and black sunglasses, as he looked more happy than ever following his wedding. Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez Marriage Schedule It is said that the couple spent a whopping close to USD 50 million on the nuptials and invited the who's who of the entertainment, sports, business, and political worlds. Starting off with a welcome dinner that saw a washout due to thunderstorms, the spirits of the wedding party were nowhere near dampened as they reportedly continued to party into the wee hours of the next day. It followed the main wedding ceremony amid a forest, where the bride had her two sons walking her down the aisle and her daughter as the maid of honor. The last day will include a party at the Arsenale, marking another private event for the wedding-goers. It is known that Andrea Bocelli's son, Matteo Bocelli, sang at the wedding, while British star Ellie Goulding also held up her end of the deal with a performance. Celebrities like actor Orlando Bloom, who went solo following his split from Katy Perry, Leonardo DiCaprio with girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, Usher and wife Jennifer Goicoechea, Karlie Kloss, Tommy Hilfiger, Oprah Winfrey, Brooks Nader, Ivanka Trump with husband Jared Kushner, and more were also among the witnesses at the ceremony.

Why Gen Z loves fake weddings
The world may be breathlessly watching all the drama surrounding the Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez wedding in Venice, but in India, a new trend is unfolding: the non-wedding wedding party. In cities like Pune, Delhi and Bengaluru, event managers, clubs and bars are organising 'wedding-themed parties" (some are brashly calling them fake weddings, no cap) and they are a hit with Gens Z and Alpha. More than 1,500 people turned up over the course of a few hours for his 'big fat fake wedding", says Rahul Avadhani, a Bengaluru-based events curator who recently 'hosted" a mega wedding party at the JW Marriott Hotel. Most of the attendees were between 21-30 years old, and it was put together by a private members club that organises experience-based events across cities in India, inspired by similar events that became mega popular at locations such as Ballr Club in Pune, which was among the first event venues to kick off the trend. Yes, people paid to be there: while women could enter for free, 'stag entry' was at a cover charge of ₹5000, fully redeemable against food and drinks. 'The vibe was like a typical Indian wedding, with mehendi wallas, dhol, wedding decor, photo booths, a DJ… only the bride and groom were missing," says Avadhani. 'The idea is why wait for someone to get married to have fun and dance till you drop? This way, the pressure is off and everyone gets to have fun." It was such a hit that 8club is planning to replicate the event in Delhi at Bel-La Monde, a posh wedding venue in Chhattarpur. As part of the promotions, a ghodi (horse) dressed in Punjabi wedding finery has been filmed around Gen Z-friendly spots in the Capital, such as the mysteriously popular Faqir Chand Bookstore in Khan Market. Without clutching our pearls and going into 'everything is a photo op for Gen Z of course they love fake weddings!" lamentations, the popularity of these events is a bit puzzling to someone not from the generation, at least initially. As someone who gets literal nightmares about weddings—losing one's entire wardrobe, turning up under or over-dressed, landing up at the wrong venue —it seems almost masochistic to do this voluntarily, without the spectre of family obligation and rashly sent RSVPs hanging over one's head. And yet, maybe that is the trick—being able to enjoy a wedding without feeling like a misfit, wondering if everyone's judging your clothes, and having people come up to you wagging a finger and going 'you're next!". I can sort of see the appeal—Indian weddings are hella fun if you can leave all that baggage behind. You get to hang out with friends, a chance to air all those outfits you wore just one time for a cousin's wedding, eat, drink and dance, take some lovely photos for Instagram, and go home without worrying if your gift will be deemed good enough. Who wouldn't want them? Are there any fake weddings for Gen Xers? Apparently, there are. The trend has advanced so rapidly in such a short time that now there are spin-offs of the same idea, such as more traditional fake wedding parties—think Hum Aapke Hain Kaun rather than Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. Your Third Place, a Bengaluru-based events company that promotes 'curated IRL experiences that spark real connections", is organising a Sober Sangeet Social in July. Founder Anurag Pandey calls it a 'begaani shaadi" (someone else's wedding) and says guests can expect 'flowers, food, mehendi, and some classic shaadi games" including a Sangeet Social Antakshari. As a child of the 1990s with bona-fide antakshari-winning credentials, I could see myself at one of these parties. Maybe Gen Z has got it right, after all. Maybe weddings should not be about managing egos, expectations and stress, the way I grew up experiencing them (hence the nightmares), but having one hell of a good time.

Two major US tech companies announce mass layoffs amid Artificial Intelligence boom. Check details
The technology sector's brutal workforce reduction continues in 2025 with Microsoft recently announcing another round of significant layoffs in its Xbox division next week as part of a broader reorganisation. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company will reduce its workforce in the coming years just as the two companies invest billions in artificial intelligence efforts. Recently, Bloomberg reported that after cutting 6,000 employees in May, tech giant Microsoft Corporation plans to layoff 'thousands' more jobs next month, particularly in sales. This comes as the company looks to 'trim its workforce' amid increased spending on artificial intelligence (AI), it added. The layoffs are expected to be across teams, with major hits likely among sales employees, sources told Bloomberg. This is the fourth major layoff for Xbox in the past 18 months, following three significant reductions last year and the closure of several subsidiary studios. Xbox, which develops video-game hardware and software, has faced pressure from Microsoft executives to improve profit margins since the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc, finalised in 2023. The tech giant often implements major organisational changes at the end of its fiscal year, which concludes on 30 June. Live Events Earlier this year, Microsoft laid off more than 300 employees as a part of its cost-cutting measures. "We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,' a Microsoft spokesperson said, according to Bloomberg. In May, Microsoft reduced its workforce by 3%, affecting around 6,000 employees across all levels, teams and geographies. This was the company's largest round of layoffs since it eliminated 10,000 roles in 2023. In January, Microsoft terminated a small number of employees, citing performance-based issues. 'The investments in infrastructure and skilling we are announcing today reaffirm our commitment to making India AI-first,' Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said earlier. Check details Amazon layoffs in 2025 Earlier this month, Amazon CEO told employees that job cuts in the tech giant would continue as AI will reduce the company's corporate workforce over the next few years. "We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs," Jassy wrote in an internal memo. "It's hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company." The company has already laid off more than 27,000 employees since 2022, including recent cuts to its devices and services units. These layoffs reflect a broader trend in the global tech industry. In early May, Google laid off around 200 employees, primarily in its global business unit in teams handling sales and partnerships. Similarly, Amazon reduced approximately 100 jobs in its devices and services unit in another round.
