Hong Kong Airlines to launch new direct routes to Melbourne and Lijiang

Hong Kong Airlines will roll out a new direct service to Melbourne and Lijiang in Yunnan province as part of an aggressive network expansion, with the carrier pledging to capitalise on the increased capacity of the city's international airport. The carrier said on Friday it would operate its direct service to Melbourne three times a week from December 12 using an Airbus A330 aircraft. The flight schedule will be flexibly timed to facilitate connections for passengers transiting through Hong Kong to popular destinations such as Vancouver, Bali, Tokyo and Osaka, it added. On Thursday, the company said it would launch the service between Hong Kong and Lijiang three times a week from September 8, using an Airbus A320 aircraft as the sole local carrier operating the route. Following the launch of services to Hulunbuir and Xi'an, Lijiang will become the airline's third new mainland China destination this year. 'This move aligns with the company's strategy to continuously develop its mainland China network and provide travellers with more diverse travel options,' it said. 'The new route … also facilitates convenient connections for transit passengers travelling on the airline's long-haul routes, such as Sydney and Vancouver, thereby strengthening Hong Kong's position as a leading international aviation hub.' Hong Kong Airlines' president Jeff Sun Jianfeng said the new destination of Melbourne would boost its Australian network following the resumption of its Gold Coast service in January and the launch of the Sydney route in June.

Hong Kong Airlines allows passengers to bring pets in cabin to even more destinations

A newly launched Hong Kong Airlines service is getting an upgrade. The local aircraft carrier will allow passengers to bring their pets into the cabin to even more destinations. Hong Kong Airlines president Jeff Sun Jianfeng confirmed plans to expand the carrier's pet-in-cabin service and introduce family-friendly products for children and older people. The service first launched in February. It is currently only available on flights to Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya in Japan. It costs HK$8,800 (US$1,120) per pet – on top of the owner's airfare – and allows passengers to bring dogs and cats into the cabin as long as they keep the animals under the seat in front of them. Each flight can provide two to six pet-in-cabin seats. Bookings must be made via Pet Holidays, the sole agent for the service. The animals – only dogs and cats – cannot weigh more than 8kg (17.6lbs) and must be kept in a carrier that is no larger than 45cm (17.7 inches) by 21cm by 37cm. The airline has designated a special check-in counter for passengers flying with their pets. Staff will escort them through the priority lane for security and immigration clearance all the way up to the boarding gate.

Hong Kong Airlines to open routes to Urumqi, Melbourne after overcoming debt woes

Hong Kong Airlines will launch flights to Urumqi in far western China in August and to Melbourne later, after making an ambitious comeback from a debt crisis three years ago and recording a 60 per cent year-on-year rise in passenger numbers in 2024. Advertisement In an exclusive interview with the Post, airline president Jeff Sun Jianfeng said the airline, once struggling with losses and debts, had returned to profitability in 2023 after Hong Kong opened up to post-Covid international travel. He also noted that its ridership had hit 5 million last year, up 60 per cent from 2023. 'Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Hong Kong Airlines was actually doing quite well, with many travellers already having a fondness for and awareness of our brand,' he said. 'During the pandemic, Hong Kong Airlines underwent a significant restructuring. After that, we made a comeback to kick-start our recovery journey. Hong Kong Airlines to expand pet-in-cabin service, with bookings full till November

Hong Kong Airlines is looking to expand a newly launched service that allows passengers to bring their pets into cabins to more destinations, as strong demand has led to bookings being filled until mid-November. Advertisement In an exclusive interview with the Post earlier this week, the carrier's president Jeff Sun Jianfeng revealed plans to expand its pet-in-cabin service, as well as to introduce new family-friendly products that would benefit toddlers, children and the elderly, in a bid to woo customers as an 'all-accommodating' airline in Hong Kong. 'We've been brewing with this pet-friendly service idea for a long time as a lot of pet lovers treat their furry companions as family members and cannot bear to part with them when going overseas,' he said. 'When we upgrade our services, we strive to satisfy our customers in all aspects. With this in mind, we pushed for this pet-in-cabin product as the first and only such home-based service in Hong Kong. 'This also further strengthens Hong Kong Airlines as an animal-friendly carrier.'
