Sime Motors unveils Malaysia's first zero-waste tyre recycling initiative

KUALA LUMPUR: Sime Motors has launched a zero-waste tyre recycling programme, marking a step forward in its environmental efforts. In collaboration with Evergreen Corporate Sdn Bhd, the programme will be implemented across all Sime Motors dealerships in Peninsular Malaysia from July 1. It is the first structured initiative of its kind by a Malaysian automotive retail group, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of end-of-life tyres through a closed-loop recycling process. Through the programme, used tyres collected from Sime Motors' service operations at brands such as BMW, MINI, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo, BYD, Denza, Drivecare and Auto Selection will be sent to Evergreen, whose facility utilises the advanced thermal recovery green technology. According to Sime Motors, the process enables 100 per cent material recovery with low harmful emissions turning waste into reusable industrial resources such as carbon black, fuel oil and recovered steel. Evergreen is also accredited with the environmental, social and governance (ESG) Gold rating by Malaysian Rating Corporation Bhd, recognising its leadership in sustainable waste management. Sime Motors nanaging director of Southeast Asia Jeffrey Gan said the programme reflects the group's commitment to sustainability and innovation in waste management. "With Evergreen Corporate's advanced capabilities, we're proud to lead the zero waste* tyre recycling within the industry," he said in a statement. Evergreen chief executive officer Wan Afif Azizul said the partnership is a significant milestone not just for the company, but for the future of green technology in Malaysia. Evergreen co-founder Kwang Meng Kian said the company is constantly working to innovate and advance tyre recycling technology. "This collaboration not only addresses the challenge of tyre disposal but does so using a solution that is clean, scalable and future-ready," he added. Sime Motors said the partnership complies with Department of Environment standards and supports national ESG and sustainability goals. The company said it recognises the need to take responsibility for its environmental impact in ways that are both practical and meaningful to customers and communities. Sime Motors said customers can be assured that used tyres from its service centres are processed through an environmentally responsible recycling system. It added that the initiative allows customers to contribute to environmental sustainability when servicing or purchasing vehicles from Sime Motors.

Hyundai establishes directly-owned distributor in Malaysia

Hyundai Motor Company announced that it has established a new subsidiary in Malaysia, giving the South Korean brand a direct presence in South-east Asia's second-largest market. The new company, Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMM) – headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, will effectively take over as Hyundai's distributor in the country from local conglomerate Sime Darby, while continuing to use the company's dealer network. Sime Darby's automotive division, Sime Darby Motors, has vehicle distribution and dealer operations across the Asia-Pacific region, for brands such as BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce, Ford, Land Rover, Porsche, Suzuki and Mitsubishi. It also has a majority-owned contract assembler, Inokom Corporation, located in Malaysia's Kedah State. Hyundai confirmed that the new company will assume full responsibility in Malaysia for the brand's 'marketing, sales and customer experience, with a dedicated local team empowered to make faster, market-relevant decisions and deliver a more connected, customer-first approach. This is underpinned by deeper market commitment, enhanced customer engagement and a renewed focus on innovation and long-term growth.' HMM will allow Hyundai to 'actively expand its dedicated Malaysian team, laying the foundation for a robust nationwide dealer network.' The new company is expected to employ around 100 people by the end of the year. Jeffrey Gan, managing director of Sime Darby Motors, said in a statement: "We are proud to have played a pivotal role in Hyundai's growth in Malaysia. As Hyundai embarks on its next phase, we remain committed to supporting its sales and aftersales operations, ensuring continuity, confidence, and a seamless service experience for existing and future Hyundai customers.' Hyundai's vehicles are currently assembled locally by Inokom, at its facility in Kedah State. The South Korean automaker is currently building a new MYR 2.2 billion (US$ 520 million) vehicle production plant in Kedah in collaboration with Inokom, which is expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2025. Hyundai confirmed that it plans to launch three new SUV and MPV models in Malaysia in the near future. "Hyundai establishes directly-owned distributor in Malaysia" was originally created and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData owned brand. BYD Sime Motors partners with Transport Ministry to drive EV adoption in Malaysia

IN a concerted effort to bolster electric vehicle (EV) adoption and support Malaysia's transition to low-carbon mobility, BYD Sime Motors has entered into a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Transport (MOT). This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to reducing carbon emissions through the wider use of EVs in both public and private sectors. The 'Jom Pandu BYD Bersama MOT' initiative is a six-month programme designed to offer Ministry personnel an immersive EV driving experience. Backed by Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd—a subsidiary of Gentari Sdn Bhd—two EV chargers have been installed at the MOT headquarters in Putrajaya to support the campaign. At the official launch ceremony held at the Ministry's complex, the partnership was inaugurated by Transport Minister YB Loke Siew Fook and Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director for Southeast Asia at Sime Motors. They were joined by Deputy Transport Minister YB Datuk Haji Hasbi Bin Habibollah, MOT Secretary General YBhg. Dato' Jana Santhiran Muniayan, General Manager of BYD Sime Motors Adeline Lew, and Izuan Hafiz, Head of Green Mobility MY-SG at Gentari. Through this initiative, BYD Sime Motors is providing the Ministry with its entire lineup of EVs–including the BYD Sealion 7, BYD Seal, BYD Atto 3 Ultra, BYD M6, and BYD Dolphin–on a temporary loan basis. The test drive programme gives MOT staff hands-on experience with these electric models, allowing them to better understand their technological advancements, performance capabilities, and day-to-day practicality. Jeffrey Gan expressed confidence that the initiative would spur a deeper appreciation for electric mobility within government ranks. He affirmed that BYD Sime Motors is proud to lead the charge alongside the Ministry of Transport in advancing the national low-carbon agenda. The experience, he noted, is designed to inspire greater EV uptake not just among the public but also within government vehicle fleets. The collaboration represents more than a showcase of EV models–it signals a broader step towards embedding sustainable transport practices within public sector operations. By encouraging firsthand interaction with EVs, the programme aims to inform policy decisions and promote institutional readiness for the adoption of clean mobility solutions. In support of this push, two 22kW AC chargers have been installed at the Ministry, reinforcing the role of public-private partnerships in developing Malaysia's EV infrastructure. Gentari, which currently operates over 530 charging points nationwide, plays a central role in achieving the government's ambitious target of 10,000 public chargers by 2025 as outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap. This collaboration between BYD Sime Motors, the Ministry of Transport, and Gentari sets a precedent for future efforts to integrate electric vehicles into Malaysia's transport ecosystem. As the country intensifies its sustainability efforts, initiatives like Jom Pandu BYD Bersama MOT pave the way for a cleaner, more energy-efficient future.
