These meteor showers, full moon will light up Michigan skies in July. When to look up
A full moon and two meteor showers are on their way to illuminate Michigan skies this July. Keep an eye out for clear skies and be ready to look up in mid- and late July for a glimpse of the buck moon and whizzing meteors from the alpha Capricornids and Southern Delta Aquariids meteor showers. Here's what to know. The full moon will peak at 4:37 p.m. on July 10, 2025. The name buck moon comes from bucks, or male deer, reaching their antlers' full-growth during this season, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Here are all the full moons of 2025: Wolf Moon: January Snow Moon: February Worm Moon: March Pink Moon: April Flower Moon: May Strawberry Moon: June Buck Moon: July Sturgeon Moon: August Corn Moon: September Harvest Moon: October Beaver Moon: November Cold Moon: December The alpha Capricornids meteor shower begins activity July 12, followed by the Southern Delta Aquariids on July 18, according to the American Meteor Society's website. Both meteor showers will remain active until Aug. 12. The alpha Capricornids is an annual meteor shower with low activity, typically producing about five meteors per hour, per the American Meteor Society. The Southern Delta Aquariids is an annual meteor shower with faint meteors, typically producing about seven to eight meteors per hour, according to NASA. The alpha Capricornids and Southern Delta Aquariids are set to peak between July 29-30, per the American Meteor Society. This bright nova is making a rare appearance. How to glimpse it in Michigan
If you thought you saw a new star in Michigan's night sky recently, you may have glimpsed V462 Lupi, a rare nova in the Lupus constellation. The stellar explosion from one of Lupus' dim stars took on a very bright appearance, first spotted by astronomers in mid-June, according to Though viewing was strongest in the southern hemisphere, the Lake Superior area in northern Michigan observed the rare celestial object, per Sky & Telescope. Here's what to know. A nova is a stellar explosion in a binary system of two stars orbiting each other, per NASA. This classical nova formed from a dim star in the Lupus constellation, according to Astronomers at Ohio State University first observed the bright object on June 12, per Live Science. An astronomer at the University of Cape Town in South Africa then identified it as a classical nova on June 16. This constellation, Latin for wolf, can be found in the southern hemisphere in the night sky, according to Constellation Guide. Lupus is between Centaurus and Scorpius. Nova V462 Lupi has been observed around Lake Superior, per Sky & Telescope. On the Border closes another Michigan location. Where 2 restaurants remain open
On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina lovers will have to drive to west Michigan to find a location. The Tex-Mex chain's last location in southeast Michigan, its Allen Park restaurant, has permanently closed. A bankruptcy filing in March had said three locations remained open in the state, now only two are open. The restaurants that remain open both are in the Grand Rapids area, in Grandville and in Woodland Mall in Kentwood. Here's what to know. The On the Border restaurant in Allen Park, Michigan, is permanently closed, according to a Google search and Facebook. The chain's website displays a "page not found," message for the location's profile. On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina is a Tex-Mex style restaurant chain founded in 1982, the chain's website says. Only 12 years after the opening of the restaurant, Brinker International acquired the company and opened the first franchised location. By 2001, more than 100 restaurants were open across the U.S. and in 2007, the restaurant went international, opening locations in South Korea. In 2010 the company, as well as 160 restaurants, was sold to Golden Gate Capital, which then turned around to sell it to Argonne Capital Group in 2014, court records say. The company website shows locations in California, Nevada, Illinois, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado, South Dakota, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. On the Border has closed over 70 locations since the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2025. A group of 40 restaurants closed in February 2025 included four Michigan locations: Auburn Hills, Holland, Novi and Westland. The Tex-Mex chain is now down to two locations in Michigan. This week, people across the country will celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrated each year on June 19, the holiday's roots go back to June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of Black people after the end of the Civil War - two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln. According to the National Museum of African American History & Culture, the holiday has become known as America's second independence day, and it officially became a federal holiday in 2021. It became an official holiday in Rhode Island in 2023. As a federal holiday, many businesses and organizations will be closed for the observance of Juneteenth, but not all.
