K-pop soloist Jeon Somi unveils comeback plans with new EP on Aug 11
SEOUL, July 22 — Korean-Canadian singer Jeon Somi will release her second EP Chaotic & Confused on August 11, her label The Black Label confirmed today. The EP comes two years after her first solo mini album Game Plan, which dropped in August 2023, Korea JoongAng Daily reported. The comeback follows the release of her digital single Extra on July 7 – her first new track in nearly a year since Ice Cream was released in 2023. Somi first rose to fame as the breakout star of girl group I.O.I, formed through the reality survival show Produce 101 in 2016. She officially went solo in 2019 under The Black Label, a YG Entertainment subsidiary, debuting with the single Birthday. Known for her bold fashion, genre-hopping music, and fluent English, she has since established herself as a Gen Z pop icon across Asia.

'After you listen to this song, you will be able to see what music I want to deliver and which way I am headed,' the artist said. The lyrics sing of love, but the music video captures a wider range of moments from regular life, including feelings of loneliness, she mused. She added that although the set was minimal, the results speak volumes. The performer appears to have taken a sharp turn from her upbeat teen image, as hinted through teaser materials released so far. 'I try to express myself through songs and concepts that best portrays myself at certain times,' she explained, 'And 'Extra' is a mature tune that I came across after growing up and experiencing a lot.'

While most have been excited for the comeback, the idol has still managed to find herself in the middle of online debates. Previously, when Somi shared lyric teasers from the song that read 'Tried to give my hunnit to you, But you want that 101', fans started calling the singer out for using AAVE (African American Vernacular English) while being Korean and White herself. Many even commented that the lyrics itself does not make any sense either. Now, the singer and her agency find themselves in the middle of another heated debate after a new teaser was dropped on June 26. Somi and her agency criticised for using deepfake and AI Somi's latest teaser shows the idol with heavy doll-like makeup, short blond hair, staring at the camera while a heart shape starts burning on her shirt. As soon as the teaser dropped, fans called out the obvious use of AI and deepfake in the video. Many cited environmental and moral concerns about using deepfakes and AI for creating content, and stated that the company could've avoided releasing the moving photo teaser in this format. One fan's comment read 'maybe if your ass stopped using ai you wouldn't be flopping this hard,' while another post stated that 'excited for the single but using ai was not a good idea.' Many fans of the idol also defended her by saying that only her company should be called out, since the decision ultimately lies with them. Jeon Somi is poised to make a comeback with a digital single in July, local media reported Thursday. Her agency The Black Label confirmed the news report on Friday, adding that she will put out the track 'Extra' on July 7. The label also unvieled a batch of black-and-white photographs of Jeon sporting a chin-length bob in platinum blonde. The upcoming single comes a year after her summer anthem 'Ice Cream,' a summer special dance number from 2024. On July 19, the performer will host a meet-and-greet in Seoul. She is planning a party-like event under the title 'Chaos.' Separately, speculations are rising that her former group I.O.I may reunite in time to mark the 10th anniversary of its debut. The group debuted in 2016 with 11 finalists from the audition show 'Produce 101.' Jeon was the top contestant of the project group, which disbanded in 2017.
