Seventeen announces world tour

Seventeen will launch an international tour in September, its agency Pledis Entertainment announced Monday. The team will kick off the 'New_' tour on Sept. 13-14 in Incheon. The two shows will also be livestreamed globally. More stops and dates are yet to be announced, but the set list for the upcoming concerts will include songs from the group's fifth full album 'Happy Burstday,' which was released in May in time for the band's 10th debut anniversary. The 16-track album entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2, and the main track 'Thunder' swept all major music charts at home. The LP sold over 2.5 million copies in its first week, setting the record for a K-pop album released this year. Seventeen's previous tour 'Right Here' ranked No. 3, the highest spot for a K-pop artist, on Billboard's midyear Top Tours chart, scoring $120.9 million. Currently, members Wonwoo and Jeonghan are completing their mandatory military service; Woozi and Hoshi will enlist in September and will not participate in the tour.

Fact Check: Did BTS' Jungkook, Cha Eun Woo and SEVENTEEN's Mingyu, Jeonghan dine together recently?

The sight of K-pop idol autographs on restaurant walls is nothing new in South Korea. However, a recent update from a popular BBQ eatery has caused a flurry of online speculation. Apgujeong Matzip, a restaurant located in Seoul, recently gained attention after a content creator uploaded a video. It showed signed autographs from some of the biggest names in K-pop: BTS' Jungkook, ASTRO's Cha Eun Woo, and SEVENTEEN members Mingyu and Jeonghan. Given the popularity of these artists, the video spread quickly across social media. It prompted enthusiastic chatter among fans who began speculating whether all four idols had visited the restaurant together. Did the 97 liners hang out together? The excitement was particularly fueled by the well-known friendship between Jungkook, Cha Eun Woo, and Mingyu. As members of the '97 liners' friendship circle (a group of male idols born in 1997) the trio's public interactions have always delighted fans. The addition of Jeonghan's autograph sparked curiosity, as his name isn't typically associated with the core 97-liner group. Social media erupted with posts celebrating the possibility of a rare get-together. Fans express joy over their potential bonding time. But the timeline tells a different story Despite the excitement, not everyone was convinced. Eagle-eyed fans pointed out that the restaurant had posted images of the idols' autographs on different dates. This suggests the signatures may not have come from a single visit. A closer look at Apgujeong Matzip's Instagram page confirmed that the posts showcasing each autograph were shared separately over time. This casts doubt on the theory of a joint dinner. This discrepancy led some fans to reconsider the possibility of a group outing. Many acknowledge that while the signatures were real, the idols likely dined there individually on different occasions. Military schedules further complicate the theory Adding to the skepticism are the military enlistment timelines of two of the four idols in question. Both BTS' Jungkook and SEVENTEEN's Jeonghan are currently serving their mandatory military duties. This makes it nearly impossible for them to have attended a public gathering like this in recent weeks. Jungkook enlisted on December 12, 2023, alongside fellow BTS member Jimin. He is expected to complete his service by June 11, 2025. Meanwhile, Jeonghan began his military service on September 26, 2024. He is currently fulfilling his duties through an alternative service route. Unlike Jungkook and Jeonghan, Cha Eun Woo and Mingyu have yet to enlist. On May 29, 2025, Fantagio Entertainment confirmed that Cha Eun Woo would be joining the military on July 28, 2025. As for SEVENTEEN's Mingyu, PLEDIS Entertainment has not released any official statements regarding his enlistment plans. Given these overlapping military commitments, the likelihood of Jungkook and Jeonghan being present at the restaurant together, or with the other two idols, seems slim.

BTS loses global dominance to rising K-pop stars who just beat Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish in album sales

BTS is just days away from their big June reunion, with a full-group music comeback likely dropping next year. While the legendary K-pop force that once ruled the global charts may be on track to snatch back their spotlight, part of which dimmed during their military enlistment, for now, The Hollywood Reporter has crowned SEVENTEEN as the 'the world's most successful K-pop band.' The 13-member boy band, formed in 2015, just cracked the global top 3 in album sales alongside pop stars like Taylor Swift, and beating Grammy history maker Kendrick Lamar. In their recent piece, The Edge of Seventeen, the outlet heaped praises on the group's rising cultural dominance, and how these artists are reinventing themselves, doing stadium tours bigger than Bruce Springsteen's and selling as many albums as Taylor Swift. The HYBE label boy band—also home to BTS—is managed by its subsidiary, Pledis Entertainment. SEVENTEEN consists of members Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, The 8, Mingyu, DK, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino. From giant posters and birthday banners to subway train ads and snack packs with their faces on, Seoul's drowning in SEVENTEEN mania as the group marks 10 years and drops their new album, Happy Burstday. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, in 2024, they were officially the biggest music group in the world in terms of album sales, only Taylor Swift and Drake ranked higher. SEVENTEEN beat out names like The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, and Kendrick Lamar. Big names, some with Academy Awards, others with straight-up Grammy hauls and cult-like followings. Their Asia tour (2023–2024) pulled in a jaw-dropping $98.4 million from just 24 shows, making it the highest-grossing K-pop tour of the year. Also read: Seventeen's Joshua says Jeonghan has 'a lot of worries like him', S Coups is 'straightforward' The HYBE building, currently laser-focused on plotting BTS's post-military comeback, is also soaking in the success of the Shohikigen singers, with a bold message flashing across the HQ: SEVENTEEN will challenge eternity. But that momentum might be heading for a breather, with more members gearing up for enlistment. South Korea requires all men to serve before they hit 30. Jeonghan and Wonwoo have already reported for duty, and others are next in line. Happy Burstday came in swinging, over 2.2 million copies sold on day one. Wild to think back to 2015, when they debuted with 17 Carat and barely moved 1,400 units in the first week. 'We are standing at a new starting line, preparing for a new path ahead and ready to blaze a new trail,' S Coups said during the interview with the HR. 'Most of the members are going to enlist in the military soon. Up until now, we've mostly focused on our group promotions,' Hoshi, the leader of the band, added. 'We would like to show more of our individualities, each of the members' personalities and capabilities, so that when the time comes and we get back together again as a group, we'll be able to showcase ourselves as a better Seventeen.' It went on to become the second-highest first-week sales for a BTS album, right behind their 2020 release Map of the Soul: 7. According to The Korea Times, it sold over 2.75 million copies in the first week. Right now, every member of the group is focused on solo projects, with J-Hope on a world tour and Jin simultaneously holding concerts across South Korea. The group is set for a full comeback in June this year, with a possible musical return lined up for 2026.

Global K-pop group SEVENTEEN 's new album, HAPPY BURSTDAY, has made waves not only with its sound and performances but also with the massive first-week sales numbers. According to a statement by their agency Pledis Entertainment, HAPPY BURSTDAY recorded a staggering 2,521,208 physical copies sold in its first week. These sales were tracked from May 26 to June 1, based on data from Hanteo Chart. The timing of this release is also special. SEVENTEEN is currently celebrating their 10th debut anniversary and this album is their fifth full-length release. To mark the decade-long journey, the group hosted a three-day event in Seoul last week. The celebration included a one-of-a-kind performance on the Jamsu Bridge in central Seoul. This is a historic moment because SEVENTEEN became the first K-pop act ever to perform on the bridge. At the celebration, member Mingyu shared the meaning behind the title, saying, 'This year marks our 10th anniversary, and since it's our fifth full-length album, we titled it 'Happy Burstday.' It's a celebration of our 10 years and a combination of the words 'burst,' as in explosion or release and 'birthday.'" While members Jeonghan and Wonwoo were absent due to their ongoing military service, the rest of the group delivered a memorable show. The hour-long concert included a total of 12 tracks including songs like Rock With You, God of Music and Very Nice. The night ended with a fireworks display over the Han River. HAPPY BURSTDAY brings together a wide mix of collaborators. Alongside SEVENTEEN's longtime producers Bumzu and Shannon Bae, the album features big names like Pharrell, Timbaland, BTS' longtime producer PDogg and K-indie artist Ha Hyunsang. The album also includes solo songs by each member. These tracks give fans a new way to enjoy their unique voices and styles. SEVENTEEN consists of 13 members: Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon and Dino. First Published: June 03, 2025, 09:11 IST
