Blow for Collingwood premiership player as rival club makes call on veteran
North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson has all but ruled out a move to sign Collingwood premiership star Jeremy Howe, after suggesting his side can't keep chasing AFL veterans. Howe's contract with the Pies expires at the end of the season but he's yet to be offered a new deal and has been touted as an ideal signing for Clarkson's Kangaroos. The 35-year-old is currently sidelined with a groin injury, but remains one of Collingwood's key defenders and has been playing some of his best footy this season for the ladder-leaders. Howe is viewed as the type of player that could lead North Melbourne's defence and help develop some of their young stars, and Seven AFL reporter Mitch Cleary said this week that a switch to the Kangaroos would make a lot of sense. 'I think, if I was North Melbourne, they've missed on Nathan Broad, they've missed on Brayden Maynard, I think he would be the perfect guy to go and nurture some of these young defenders," he said on Seven's The Agenda Setters this week. 'We've seen Will Dawson you've been big on in the last couple of months, Charlie Comben's still finding his feet - (he'd be perfect) to go and partner up as that third tall in defence for a year or two at North Melbourne. He is still, to this point, yet to receive an offer from Collingwood.' But while Howe would be a handy pick up for a side like North Melbourne, Clarkson has hosed down the possibility of signing the 35-year-old, who may opt to retire at season's end if a new deal at Collingwood is not forthcoming. The Kangaroos coach is worried his side would become 'too old' with the addition of Howe after they already recruited former Swans captain Luke Parker, premiership Eagles forward Jack Darling and ex-Bulldogs defender Caleb Daniel at the end of last season. Alastair Clarkson all but rules out Jeremy Howe signing "We'll look at any player that we think will help our list, but I think he'd be pretty content at Collingwood," Clarkson said on Thursday. "They're chasing the flag. I don't think we'll be in that space (of chasing Howe), but who knows. "We had that strategy at the end of last year when we brought in Luke Parker and Jack Darling and Caleb Daniel, and they've given us some really good assistance and sturdiness. But we can't just keep going down that line either, because otherwise we will become too old." Daniel, 29, is averaging 26 disposals per game, 32-year-old Parker is averaging 22.8 disposals and 4.8 clearances, while 33-year-old Darling has kicked 16.5 in attack. It shows that North's strategy to recruit experienced players has paid off in some respects and led to talk that a move to North Melbourne for Howe could be a good way for him to finish a decorated 268-game career. Clarkson's 16th-placed Kangaroos (4-12-1) face a tough test against an in-form Sydney (8-9) at the SCG on Saturday. And they will be without defender Luke McDonald for the rest of the season after he underwent shoulder surgery on Thursday. "When we went and saw the specialist after that (Hawthorn) game, they said, 'let's just leave it for a couple of weeks and see whether he can regain some strength in it', knowing full well it was probably going to require surgery at the end of the year," Clarkson said. "But it just hasn't improved enough in terms of the strength or function to get him to the line." Footy star Jeremy Howe reveals he took so many drugs to overcome an injury that his wife wouldn't let him pick up their three-year-old son
Collingwood veteran Jeremy Howe has opened up on the shocking aftermath of a devastating injury that left him taking so much medication he couldn't pick up his son. Howe suffered three separate breaks in his arm after he landed awkwardly during the Pies' round-one clash with Geelong in 2023, the pain of which he described as 'like a blowtorch to my arm'. And that was just the start of his problems. Surgery on the injury did not go according to plan and he had to return to hospital to treat an infection in the same arm, ultimately sidelining him for four months. 'It was the pills and the painkillers that got me the most,' Howe told Unfiltered with Hamish McLachlan. 'I've taken anti–inflams and I've taken pain relief to get through games flat-out – it's probably not ideal but it's generally what I've done. 'Taking so many antibiotics, painkillers, all at the same time, for a large period of time, 11 days in a row. 'I was in such a haze I had no emotion. I didn't know what I was doing. (My wife) Kahlia would bring (our son) Zander in and I couldn't pick him up, I wasn't allowed to touch him. 'I questioned everything - is this really worth this, is this what I want to be at 32? I'm not even capable of picking my son up. 'If I can't be a husband and I can't be a dad, footy just gets parked and that's genuinely when I thought I was going to scrap it.' Howe, who has likened the trauma from his brutal arm injury to that of a car accident, says he still has nerve damage. 'I've got no feeling in my thumb,' he said. 'I don't know when that will come back.' Howe was kept on 'about a dozen' antibiotics for a long while after his accident so that the infection didn't return, and that created its own problems. 'I was taking so many antibiotics and the strength of what they were, my gut started eroding from the inside and ended up having to go back into hospital and getting more pills trying to fight what the other antibiotics are doing while I'm still playing,' he said. 'I was questioning, is this really worth doing this? I don't want to be 40 and all of a sudden my intestines are gone. Cooked. 'I managed to wean myself off the antibiotics... It was either stop playing and get the metal out or scrap the antibiotics and pray the infection never came back. 'So we just stopped the antibiotics... and it (the infection) never came back. 'I got off them and it instantly made me feel better. And I managed to win a flag at the end of the year.' In March 2025, the footy star and his wife welcomed their second child into the world just 24 hours before the Magpies' season opener against GWS. The delighted couple shared the news that three–year–old son Zander now has a baby brother named Saxon.

AFL 2025: Collingwood will be without two experienced defenders for a fortnight
The defensive stocks of premiership favourite Collingwood have been dealt a blow after Jeremy Howe and Dan Houston were both sidelined through injury ahead of Friday's showdown with finals contender Fremantle. The Magpies are also unable to pinpoint a return date for destructive but injury hindered star Jordan De Goey. Howe suffered an adductor strain during Collingwood's loss to Gold Coast while following scans also revealed an abdominal concern for Houston. Both Howe and Houston, who have been key parts of the competition's leading defence, will miss the next fortnight. The loss of Houston means Josh Daicos is unlikely to run through the midfield where he produced one of the more impressive final quarters against the Suns. De Goey has returned to training from his concussion but will need to complete a minimum two week fitness block. Collingwood head of performance Jarrod Wade said De Goey's next fortnight would determine his timeline to return. 'Jordan De Goey will shortly complete his progression through concussion protocols and is set to commence a two-week training block,' Wade said. 'A return to play timeline will be determined once the training block is complete.' Norm Smith Medal winner Bobby Hill is also set to miss a fourth straight game as he deals with personal reasons and illness. 'Bobby Hill has missed the side's last three matches due to personal reasons and was unable to train last week due to illness,' Wade said. 'Hill returned to training over the weekend. His focus is on resuming full training before a timeline is placed on his return. 'The club continues to support Hill throughout this period.'

Dan Houston, Jeremy Howe and Bobby Hill all set to miss Collingwood's clash with Fremantle
Collingwood have lost two important pieces of their defensive set-up for Sunday's crunch clash against Fremantle, with Dan Houston joining Jeremy Howe on the sidelines. It comes as the Magpies confirmed 2023 Norm Smith Medal winner Bobby Hill would miss a fourth-straight game, with the string of star absences set to fuel the Dockers' hopes of causing an MCG upset. Houston is expected to miss two games after pulling up sore from Collingwood's loss to Gold Coast last weekend, while Howe faces a similar timeline after being subbed out of that match folllowing an adductor strain. 'Dan Houston was able to complete the match against the Gold Coast Suns but scans early in the week revealed he has sustained a mild abdominal strain,' the Magpies released in a statement on Wednesday. The Pies will give fellow first-choice defender Billy Frampton another week to recover from his calf issue, meaning the ladder leaders will be without three of their best backmen as they look to overcome Freo. Hill has missed Collingwood's past three matches due to personal reasons, and while he returned to training last weekend, the club said his focus was 'on resuming full training before a timeline is placed on his return'. The Magpies are set to regain premiership trio Brody Mihocek, Beau McCreery and Pat Lipinski for Sunday's clash, where they will look to continue a strong recent record against Justin Longmuir's side. The Dockers haven't beaten Collingwood in their past five attempts dating back to 2022, with last year's thrilling draw at Optus Stadium the closest they've come. Longmuir said his side would embrace the challenge of battling the best in the business. 'There's no bigger challenge in footy than going to the MCG and taking on Collingwood,' he said. 'I understand that you've got to take on them as a team and they're the best team in the comp, but you also take on the occasion and the crowd. 'We've spoken about that, we're going to embrace that challenge. It's a good opportunity to see where our footy sits.'
