Essendon's Nik Cox says he'll get back to the AFL after concussion panel ordered he sit out 2025

Essendon young gun Nik Cox says he's 'more motivated than ever' to get back to AFL football after the league's concussion panel gave him the all clear to continue playing, but only after taking the rest of 2025 off. Cox, 22, hasn't played a game in 2025 as he continued to deal with the effects of concussion and fronted the AFL panel which has this year ordered the medical retirement of West Coast premiership veteran Jeremy McGovern. But panel has provided 'a clear return-to-play pathway' for Cox, after stepping away from football completely for the remainder of the year. Despite being forced to the sidelines, Cox said he would be back. 'After meeting with an independent AFL medical panel regarding my concussion history, I'm pleased that I've been cleared to continue my playing career,' he said 'While I'm disappointed that I won't return to the field for the remainder of the 2025 season, this time away from the game will be used to focus fully on my health, recovery, and building the strongest possible foundation heading into pre-season. 'I'm incredibly grateful to my club, teammates, medical staff, and everyone who has supported me through what's been a challenging and uncertain period. I've learned a lot about myself over the past few months, and I'm more motivated than ever to get back to doing what I love. 'My focus now is on continuing to work closely with specialists and the club to make sure I'm in the best place physically and mentally to return to football.' Essendon football boss, Daniel McPherson, said the Bombers were 'fully committed to helping him recover both physically and mentally'. 'After meeting with the panel in June, the recommendation for Nik to step away from footy for the remainder of this year was one that we accepted with the view to giving him the best chance of getting back to his best when he returns, both on and off-field,' he said. 'Nik will have our full support as we navigate with him the next steps in his recovery.'

Jayden Hunt on the outer as Eagles turn to youth

West Coast will unleash small forward Malakai Champion as their eighth debutant of the year, but the AFL career of Jayden Hunt is on thin ice. Champion, who came through West Coast's Next Generation academy program, will make his debut as the sub in Friday night's clash with GWS at Optus Stadium. The 19-year-old has kicked seven goals in 11 WAFL Eagles games this year, with his defensive pressure highlighted by an 11-tackle effort against Peel recently. Champion's debut comes just a week after West Coast unveiled swingman Jobe Shanahan, who impressed with a goal and three marks from eight disposals in a 29-point loss to Collingwood. The recent retirements of Jeremy McGovern (concussion) and grand final hero Dom Sheed (knee) - plus injuries to Elliot Yeo, Oscar Allen and Jake Waterman - have further accelerated West Coast's move to generation next. Jamie Cripps, Allen, Hunt, Campbell Chesser, Jack Petruccelle and Tom Cole are among the more notable names who are coming out of contract at the end of this season. Allen is being widely tipped to join either Brisbane or Hawthorn as a restricted free agent, but the rest of the players mentioned face a nervous wait to see if they will be offered a new deal. It means Hunt's dramatic drop in form has come at the worst possible time, with the former Demon to be axed for the clash with GWS. The 30-year-old tallied just one disposal from 14 per cent playing time as the sub last Saturday, which followed on from a two-disposal effort a week earlier against Carlton. Remember the name ✍️ — West Coast Eagles (@WestCoastEagles) July 3, 2025 "Form can get everyone at different times," Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said. "We're going to send Hunty back (to the WAFL) and build his game again, like we've done with other players this year." McQualter praised Malakai for his rapid progress this year. And with the likes of Harley Reid, Bo Allan, Tyrell Dewar, Reuben Ginbey, Tom Gross, Clay Hall, Elijah Hewett, Sandy Brock, Archer Reid, Jack Williams, Shanahan and Tom McCarthy either having already made their mark or shown flashes of their potential, there is finally some light at the end of the tunnel in West Coast's rebuild. GWS (9-6) beat West Coast by 81 points earlier this year and will be aiming to post another percentage-boosting win.

Footy legend reveals why he feels guilty about the most famous moment of his career in emotional farewell to teammates

West Coast premiership great Dom Sheed enters AFL retirement tinged with guilt at the kick that made him famous. The 30-year-old from Kalgoorlie had played 165 games since his 2014 debut, but none this season after tearing the ACL in his right knee at February pre-season training. 'It has been an absolute privilege to represent the West Coast Eagles, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity this great footy club gave a skinny kid from Kalgoorlie,' Sheed said. His retirement comes a week after fellow Eagle Jeremy McGovern also called it quits because of persistent concussion problems. McGovern's intercept mark deep in defence famously started the crucial chain of possessions late in the last quarter of the 2018 grand final win over Collingwood. Sheed was on the end of the play, marking and kicking an outstanding goal from a difficult angle, with Magpies fans howling at him on the boundary fence only a couple of metres away. The footy star (pictured with wife Brooke) tore the ACL in his right knee during February pre-season training Shortly after, the Eagles won by five points for their fourth and most recent flag. Sheed told Eagles teammates of his decision on Tuesday morning, later confirming the news in a club statement. 'To play for the club I grew up supporting has been a dream come true, but the relationships you build and memories you share from footy are what I will cherish most,' he said. 'There are so many people I would like to thank for helping me along the journey, first and foremost my amazing family. 'It hasn't always been easy. There's been plenty of ups and downs, and to finish up without being able to play alongside the boys this year due to injury has been tough. 'But my family have been there for me every step of the way.' At his prime, Sheed was a key cog in West Coast's talent-packed midfield. But from 2022-24 he only managed 24 senior games because of injuries. Shead (pictured right) kicked the winning goal in the 2018 grand final, in which West Coast pipped Collingwood by five points 'I'm very fortunate. Right place, right time ... and then to be able to execute and impact on the biggest day in footy is something I think about every five minutes,' he said of the most famous moment of his career. 'It has brought me a wide range of emotions over the years - some amazing ones and some down ones as well.' Sheed revealed some guilt that his heroic kick largely overshadowed one of the great premiership deciders. 'There's a level of guilt that comes with it,' he said. 'When people talk about that game, they talk about that kick a lot. 'It takes a lot of people to be able to make a grand final, to be able to win one, and I was a beneficiary of what was, in my eyes, one of the greatest grand finals ever.

Latest Eagles premiership hero hangs up the boots

Jeremy McGovern took the crucial mark that kicked off West Coast's grand final-winning play in 2018. West Coast premiership hero Dom Sheed has announced his retirement, calling time on his 165-game career. Sheed was ruled out before the start of the season after tearing his ACL in February, having played just 24 games since 2022 due to injury and form. With the Eagles entering a new era under Andrew McQualter, Sheed ends his time in the blue and gold but will forever have his place in Eagles folklore for his grand-final winning goal in 2018. Sheed was on the end of the play that started with Jeremy McGovern's brave intercept mark in the dying moments of the contest, with Sheed proving a dead-eye from the boundary to put the Eagles in front. With McGovern forced into medical retirement last month in leaves Liam Ryan as the only player who was part of that play still active on the Eagles list. Sheed will front the media at 12:45pm. More to come...
