Jets' Jermaine Johnson on physically unable to perform list to open training camp

After Jermaine Johnson missed 15 games last season and 10 months of football activities, what's a few more practices spent on the sideline just to make sure that he is healthy? Johnson was placed Saturday on the physically unable to perform list and will be on the sideline when the Jets open training camp Wednesday. Advertisement 'I will be on PUP because the team wants to move slow, to be safe, which I agree with,' Johnson wrote on X. 'Not because I'm not ready. All is well.' Johnson suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 2 last season and was not a participant in spring workouts. The 2023 Pro Bowler was expected to challenge his career high of 7.5 sacks last season before the injury derailed his upward trajectory. Jets place DE Jermaine Johnson on active/PUP

The Jets placed edge rusher Jermaine Johnson on the active/physically unable to perform list Saturday, the team announced. Johnson tore his right Achilles in a Week 2 game against the Titans, but he is expected to be ready for the 2025 season opener. He gave an update after the Jets announced their pre-camp transactions. "I will be on PUP because the team wants to move slow to be safe, which I agree with. Not because I'm not ready. All is well," Johnson wrote on social media. Johnson, the 26th overall pick in 2022, earned Pro Bowl honors in 2023 when he totaled 7.5 sacks, 55 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 16 quarterback hits and an interception that he returned for a touchdown. The Jets also placed wide receiver Irvin Charles on the active/PUP list. Charles, a core special teams player, tore an ACL on a punt-coverage snap against the Dolphins last December. At that time, his five tackles on special teams tied for team lead. Rookie linebacker Aaron Smith received an active/non-football injury/illness designation. His injury or illness is undisclosed. The South Carolina State product signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in April after leading the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with 92 tackles in 2024.

National media dishes on injury recovery for Jets' Jermaine Johnson

New York Jets EDGE Jermaine Johnson suffered a season-ending torn Achilles injury in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans last year. It delivered a massive blow to both the Jets' pass rush and Johnson's career. As a sophomore in 2023, he had broken out of his shell by recording 7.5 sacks. The early-season setback robbed him of a proper follow-up showing. The Jets are reliant on Johnson making a full recovery and regaining explosion as a pass rusher. Johnson and Will McDonald IV are the only proven EDGE rushers on the roster. There's little-to-no depth behind them. ESPN recently published an article outlining the top storylines to follow around the league heading into training camp. There's a specific section that focuses on five injuries worth monitoring. Johnson's recovery is featured. "Johnson is expected to return in Week 1 (against his old teammate, quarterback Aaron Rodgers), but could start training camp on the PUP list, according to new coach Aaron Glenn," Benjamin Solak wrote. "Because of the scheme switch from Robert Saleh to Glenn, it's important that Johnson gets at least some time to knock the rust off in August." Solak makes sense. Coach Aaron Glenn is introducing a new defensive scheme. Training camp and the preseason are when players begin acclimating to a new system ahead of the regular-season campaign. Ideally, Johnson would receive that opportunity, but there are no guarantees. "Athletes returning from Achilles tears can also struggle for months to reclaim their old explosiveness," Solak continued. "To accurately gauge how he might impact the game in September, if and when he's back in Week 1, it's important to get a good look at him on the move during camp." Jets fans should receive an update on Johnson's health at training camp next week. This article originally appeared on Jets Wire: ESPN: Monitoring Jets EDGE Jermaine Johnson's recovery

Jermaine Johnson Excited For Jets' Week 1 Matchup vs. Aaron Rodgers

Jermaine Johnson Excited For Jets' Week 1 Matchup vs. Aaron Rodgers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Jermaine Johnson has always been sort of an afterthought for the New York Jets, dating back to the day he was drafted in 2022. Advertisement The third first-round pick by the team that year, Johnson hasn't won an award like wide receiver Garrett Wilson (NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year) or been named to an All-Pro team like Sauce Gardner. He has, however. remained a key cog in New York's defense despite that. After improving his sack total from his first season to his second, the Jets had high hopes for Johnson in his third year. Things turned bad when the Florida State Seminoles product suffered a torn Achilles in the season's second game. After almost a year of recovering from that injury, Johnson is just a few months away from returning to the field for the Jets. During mandatory minicamp, head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed the Jets expect Johnson to be ready for the start of the regular season. Advertisement That means Johnson will be on the field in Week 1 when the Jets take on the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers, their former quarterback. 'It was a pleasure having Aaron around and stuff like that, and I wish him the best,' Johnson said. 'But when I get between those lines, there's no friends. And I think he knows that, and he feels the same, so I'm excited. 'It's just another game, but for me, it's going to be my first game back and there's a lot of emotions. And when my emotions run high, I tend to play pretty well.' Johnson and Rodgers have recovered from Achilles injuries over the last two years. They have shared that connection dating back to last year when Rodgers helped Johnson recover. Advertisement Things are different now, though. Rodgers is a Steeler, and Johnson needs a big year on his own to show why he belongs among one of the best young edge rushers in the game. He'll have a chance to show that in Week 1 against his former quarterback.
