‘Amid tragedy came relief': UPSI student hurt in fatal crash secures long-awaited MARA loan

JERTIH, July 3 — A Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student who survived last month's fatal bus crash in Gerik has finally received a long-awaited education loan from Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), ending a two-year wait. Nur Ain Najwa Mohd Ilias, 23, said she was overwhelmed with gratitude when MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki personally handed over the offer letter duting a visit to her family home in Kampung Gong Kemuntong recently. 'I applied for the loan twice since enrolling at UPSI, but both attempts failed due to technical errors in the form submission,' she told Bernama during a visit yesterday by the Girl Guides Malaysia (Terengganu branch), led by its president Tengku Puteri Daulath Raja Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra Sultan Mizan. 'Amid this tragedy, there was unexpected relief. Not only was I offered the loan I had long hoped for, but my younger twin brothers, who had postponed their own university education so I could pursue mine first, were also promised MARA assistance if accepted into higher learning institutions,' she said. The second of six siblings, Nur Ain Najwa said the loan, which takes effect in October, includes a RM800 monthly living allowance to ease her family's financial burden, as she had relied on her brothers' and part-time work, while receiving aid from the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIDAM) to pay tuition. 'I didn't apply for a National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan because I had already received one during my diploma studies at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA),' said the Arabic Language and Education student. Her twin brothers, Muhammad Hassan and Muhammad Hussin, 22, now plan to further their studies, with the former applying to Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) and the latter awaiting results from Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), expected this Friday. Nur Ain Najwa, who sustained a fractured left shoulder and a sprained right wrist in the crash, had earlier gone viral after sharing her family's struggles with Asyraf Wajdi during his visit to Gerik Hospital. The June 9 incident involved a chartered bus carrying 45 UPSI students from Jertih back to the main campus in Tanjung Malim and a Perodua Alza, resulting in 15 deaths and 33 others injured, including the drivers and passengers of both vehicles. — Bernama

Higher Education Ministry mulls daytime travel rule after deadly UPSI bus crash on Gerik highway post Aidiladha

JERTIH, June 29 — Higher learning institutions (IPTs) must closely monitor any initiatives taken independently by their students, including chartering tour buses to return to their hometowns during the holiday season, said Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. The Higher Education Minister said such oversight is crucial to prevent any untoward incidents involving students. 'I urge universities to maintain communication and monitor any self-initiated plans by students,' he told reporters after visiting the home of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman at Kampung Gong Pasir, Kerandang here today. Also present were Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Zamri Ibrahim and Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Fadzli Adam. Nurly Sahirah was among 15 UPSI students who perished in a road accident involving a charter bus and a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak on June 9. Zambry also said the ministry is reviewing various views and suggestions for improvement following the tragic incident, including proposals to schedule student travel during the day instead of at night. 'We take note of all the concerns raised, especially on social media, to prevent any untoward incidents,' he said. He added that the ministry remains committed to acting swiftly and decisively in addressing student-related issues, especially those involving loss of life. — Bernama

Unemployed woman loses RM62,000 in phone scam to ‘TNG rep' and ‘Perak cop'

JERTIH, June 27—A woman lost RM62,000 after being duped by a phone scam syndicate posing as a police officer yesterday afternoon. Besut district police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the 19-year-old unemployed woman answered a phone call belonging to her father from an individual who introduced himself as a representative from Touch 'n Go headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. 'The individual claimed that the victim's father had a RM25,000 summons related to a Touch 'n Go account, then the call was supposedly connected to the Perak police contingent headquarters and spoke to a police officer. 'The victim was further shocked when he was told her that a bank account had been opened in her father's name involved in a money laundering and drug case,' he said in a statement today. Azamuddin said the suspect asked the victim to pay RM60,000 if she wanted to clear his name and because she was afraid, the victim sold jewellery belonging to her mother, who is a retired teacher, to get money for the payment as instructed. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, he said. — Bernama

Shattered dreams: Dad receives daughter's death certificate instead of degree after UPSI bus crash

JERTIH, June 13 — Nearly a year ago, Mohamad Isma Abdul Manaf sent off his eldest daughter, Nur Dalila Farhana, to university with the hope that she would return home with a degree. But fate had other plans. Instead of a degree, today, the 47-year-old father received his daughter's death certificate. Nur Dalila Farhana, 21, was among the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak, on Monday. 'It tore me apart to see my daughter's name on a death certificate. No parent ever wishes to face that, but this is my fate. I have to accept it and stay strong,' he told Bernama after receiving the document from Terengganu National Registration Department (NRD) director Mohamad Nasir Kareem at the family's home in Kampung Bharu Tok Dhor here. Mohamad Isma said that the death certificate in hand would ease matters for him and his wife, Norinda Kasim, 49, in handling other affairs, such as insurance claims and related issues. The crash occurred when the chartered bus, en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle before overturning. The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. Meanwhile, Mohamad Nasir said that eight death certificates were handed over to the next of kin at their respective residences today, adding that five others were collected by family members at the NRD counters, whereas two more are still being processed. 'This is an initiative by the NRD to ease the burden on families by handling the death registration process for their children without requiring them to be present at the NRD counters in Besut or Setiu,' he added. — Bernama
