From Brazil to Westminster: How health pilot is proving a force for good for patients and the NHS
Jessica Ellis is a Chewie. She's not from a galaxy far, far away but here, right now, working in one of our most deprived communities. To the people she helps, she is a force for good. We are standing in front of a large block of council flats in Westminster, central London. The entrycom buzzes. "Hi Mrs Dikir, how are you?" Jessica asks. And then "thank you" as we're let in and make our way up five flights of stairs. Inside the flat, in the living room, Mr Jaber Dikir sits on a soft, plush armchair. It has to be comfortable because Mr Dikir spends most of his days sitting here. "I have a heart problem, I have open heart surgery and now I have heart failure," Mr Dikir explains. "I have water in my chest and that gives me big trouble to sleep, to breathe," he adds as he begins to wheeze. I ask Mr Jaber how Jessica has been able to help him. "She hears you, she listens to you," he replies. "She understands everything. She even called the doctor and he gave me permission to stay at home (for my blood tests). That's really appreciated. I couldn't walk properly, I couldn't go to the clinic." Jessica is a community health and wellbeing worker (CHWWs). That's where the nickname comes from. CHWWs work in small teams, going door to door in some of the most deprived areas of the country. It's part of an NHS pilot inspired by a successful programme in Brazil. A simple but effective intervention Jessica says her role is "to make life easier". Mr Dakir, she tells me, is struggling with his mobility. So is organising a designated disabled bay. "Mr Dakir is struggling to get out to his appointments, and the GP needs a blood test from him. So I was able to speak to the GP and he's been labelled as temporarily housebound so the district nursing team can come in now and take the bloods for him at home." A simple but effective intervention that has a huge impact on Mr Dakir and the NHS. The project is currently being used in 15 neighbourhoods around the country. In Westminster, there has been a 7% drop in A&E admissions and an 11% reduction in hospital admissions year on year. There has also been a 47% increase in the likelihood of households having vaccinations, an 82% increase in cancer screenings and a 7.3% drop in unscheduled GP consultations. Taking community care right to the patient's door Dr Melinda Creme is a local GP. Jessica acts as a conduit between Dr Creme and her patients. "We need to look at the costs of what might happen downstream if disease is not picked up earlier, if health inequalities are not addressed sooner, and so there should be potential huge savings down the line. "It might take five years, 10 years to make a difference and that's the issue, because obviously governments change within that time. "But if there's a long-term lens on this, then we stand a chance of being able to afford a health service free at the point of delivery." This is exactly what the government wants, what the NHS wants, to bring care into the community. With this project, they are taking community care right to the patient's door. Dr Creme says the days when people would go to their GP and expect their family doctor to look after anybody and everybody about everything are gone. "We can't possibly do that. We're not equipped to do that because the population is expanding and we cannot address all needs." Labour's 10-year health plan set for launch The government is expected to focus on personalised and community care in its 10-year health plan when it is published on Thursday. It will look to ease pressure on buckling emergency departments and models like this have shown early signs of good results, but they require time and investment. Projects like this can help ease the strain on services facing record pressures and tight budgets. They could be a significant part of a wider NHS plan.

He also played Finn in Misfits, and Angelo in Shameless. Revealing their romance, Celebs Go Dating star Kimberly took to Instagram to make things official. She shared a slew of sweet snaps from a trip to Blackpool with her new man. Captioning the post, the actress joked: 'When choosing a partner it helps that they are the same size clothing/footsize cus not only do you get a new bestie… "But a new wardrobe too.' She then added: 'Anyways thoroughly enjoying seeing the world (Blackpool) with you @nathanmcmullen88.' Kimberly's friends and followers were quick to congratulate her on her new relationship. Corrie fans know Kimberly for playing the role of sex worker Nicky. Her character arrived on the famous cobbles in 2020, and she struck up a surprising friendship with Dan Osborne, after he enlisted her services following the death of his wife Sinead Tinker. As well as playing Nicky in Corrie on and off since 2020, Kimberly also starred alongside EastEnders star Danielle Harold for Celebrity Hunted earlier this year. Away from TV, Kimberly runs her own fashion business, Hart-Work. When she left Corrie in 2022, before returning last year, she set up the reupholstering company. 5

Jessica Ellis, Wayne Thomas running for judge in Honesdale-based district
The primary election on May 20 in Wayne County features one race for magisterial district judge in central Wayne County. There are two candidates in District 22-03-02 vying for the six-year term starting in 2026: Jessica Ellis, a local attorney, and Wayne Thomas, a retired Pennsylvania state trooper. Both have cross-filed to appear on the Republican and Democratic ballots. Ted Mikulak, who served in this post from 2010 to 2015 before resuming his heating and plumbing contractor trade, had announced his intention to run, but told the Tri-County Independent he felt his "heart was not in it" and instead was endorsing Thomas. Mikulak had not filed his necessary petition with the Wayne County Bureau of Elections. The vacancy for district judge occurred Aug. 23, 2024, when Judge Kay Bates retired before her term was finished. The remaining two district judges in Wayne County, Judge Bonnie Carney (22-3-01) and Judge Jonathan Dunsinger (22-3-04) have handled the caseload. District 22-03-02, based in Honesdale, covers Canaan, Cherry Ridge, South Canaan and Texas townships, and the boroughs of Honesdale, Prompton and Waymart. March 11 was the deadline for candidates to file. The voter registration deadline is May 5. Ellis is partner in the Ellis Law Group in Honesdale with her husband Brandon Ellis and has served as an assistant district attorney since April 2022 with the Wayne County District Attorney's Office. She is also the solicitor for Wayne County Human Services. "Our community deserves a judge whose court reflects the values of Wayne County: hard work, respect for others, and fairness," she said in a press release. "I will be that judge." "I look forward to meeting as many people as I can leading up to the election and will keep my pages updated with opportunities to get together," Ellis said in the release. "I am passionate about my family and building our life here in Wayne County. As a lifelong resident, I've been deeply involved in our community. My record in public service, in my law practice, and in my family demonstrates my commitment to integrity, fairness and hard work." The candidate continued, "I humbly ask for your vote because the district deserves a magistrate judge who understands the unique needs of its residents and their values." Her current community involvement, according to her website, includes being a member of Honesdale Area Jaycees, head coach of Honesdale High School junior varsity softball, vice president of the Wayne County Attorney Bar Association and Honesdale High School mock trial coach. She is also volunteer coach for the Honesdale Missy Basketball Program and for 25 years has been a Central United Methodist Church Bell Choir member. She graduated from Honesdale High School in 2005, Moravian University in Bethlehem in 2009 and from law school at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 2013. She and her husband are parents of two sons, Leland, 4 and Wyatt, 2. Her campaign website is and her Facebook page is Jess for Judge: Wayne Thomas, of Prompton, received an honorable discharge in in 2016 after serving 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police. He worked in both the patrol and criminal investigation units. He is currently serving as a Western Wayne School District police officer. His career in law enforcement, he states in a press release, helped him develop "strong professional working relationships" with numerous county district attorney offices, public defender offices, magistrate offices, children and youth agencies, multi-disciplinary teams, school administrators and teachers, other regional law enforcement agencies and the many attorneys who interact within the court system. "He knows the administration procedures of an MDJ office and courtroom, and has fulfilled the required Minor Judiciary Education Certification," the release states. "He leads by example and demands and gets respect from the students… His job gives him the ability to assist students in career paths, while being a role model, and even teaching classes of students about various aspects of his job," his press release states. 'I made the decision to run for magistrate because I am passionate about upholding the rule of law and ensuring that everyone has access to fair and impartial justice," Thomas said in the release. "I believe that the most important qualities of a successful magistrate are integrity, ethics, impartiality, and a deep commitment to public service.' Thomas continued, "When I can be a part of someone making a right decision to fix a wrong one, especially our children, it makes my life, and all that I have done, and do today, worth it!
