Shrewsbury artist outraged by second home tax bill on only house
A woman unable to move into her new home during repairs received a bill for £3,000 in extra council tax because the local authority deemed her a second home Rose from Shrewsbury received a bill totalling £6,603.20 - Band F tax plus a 100% second home premium - despite only owning one property. "The whole thing felt like a little bit of a stitch-up, and quite malicious", she said.A spokesperson for Shropshire Council, which has since removed most of the extra charge, said the second home premium was "charged for any period that the property is not occupied as a main residence". Miss Rose picked up the keys to her new home in the Greenfields area in April - but she could not move in as it had no hot water or lived with her parents in Wolverhampton for a few weeks while works were completed, during which time the bill April, second home owners in Shropshire have had to pay double the usual council tax. Miss Rose said she had let the authority know that she would not be moving in fully until the hot water and heating were fixed."At no point, in any emails or when I filled in online forms, did I say I was a second home owner," she said, adding that she had "just tried to be open and honest about what my living situation was.""It just opened the floodgates."Miss Rose said she felt like "it's up to me to prove to them I don't have a second home." Miss Rose, a former journalist, is now a self-employed artist who specialises in lino-cut income is not stable, fluctuating between £6,000 and £24,000 each year - which she said made the second home premium on her council tax unaffordable."If I'm very lucky, I'll sell a painting here and there - I'm just not the right person to go after," she said."I don't have a string of lovely cottages in Wales or anything like that." Shropshire Council has reduced the bill now the repairs are it has told her an extra payment of £118.57 remains due in for a two-week period in council stated the house was furnished during this time, meaning it qualified for the second home tax - something Miss Rose said was "totally irrelevant.""You could have one chair, you could have four chairs - I really don't know at what point a house becomes 'furnished'," she said. "I found it quite offensive to be put in this second home owner bracket and quizzed on how many sticks of furniture I've got." A spokesperson for Shropshire Council said "the classification of a second residence is a furnished property that is not a person's place of residence."While there is an exception for property in need of or undergoing major repair to make it habitable, this exception does not apply to substantially furnished dwellings." ‘Council charged me a £3k premium for crashing at my parents' home'
Jessica Rose was left 'disgusted' after her council hit her with a £6,000 bill – for a second home that doesn't exist. The first-time buyer, 50, purchased her home in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, in April, after years of 'trying and failing' to get on the property ladder. But after the previous owners left it in a state, she was forced to crash at her parents' house in Wolverhampton for five weeks while work was ongoing. On May 13, Shropshire council charged her double council tax, billing her £6,603.20 for a 'second home', which critics have described as an 'opportunistic cash grab'. Ms Rose told The Telegraph that she feels 'attacked': 'It's a nasty, malicious thing to do. It's extremely greedy.' Thousands of families across the country are being swept up in the punitive clampdown on second homes, irrespective of circumstances. Families with inherited properties, flats needed for work or houses that have been sat on the market for years are being charged exorbitant bills. The premium was introduced by the previous Conservative government to fix the housing crisis, but has instead been used by councils to boost their coffers. The Telegraph is calling for the levy to be scrapped, which has seen the average second home bill rise to £3,672.

EXCLUSIVE Love Island bosses lineup aesthetics practitioner and clinic owner Rose Selway who's set to reveal her famous clientele on new series
Love Island bosses are lining up an aesthetics practitioner to star in the new series, MailOnline can reveal. Rose Selway, 24, from Devon is set to join the cast of singletons looking for love this summer as she swaps business for pleasure at the Mallorca villa. The entrepreneur, who runs 12 branches of her tweakments clinic Jessica Rose, has an extensive list of celebrity clients, including former stars of the ITV2 show. Rose shared before and after images of ex-Islanders Lucinda Strafford and Jessy Potts via her Instagram page and has documented her own journey with Botox and filler online. Writing on Instagram, Rose explained that she previously had a rhinoplasty, 'Botox brow lift', and lip filler, often performing the enhancements on her own face. Speaking about her business, she said: 'Aesthetics isn't just my job, it's my whole world. I absolutely love it and adore every single one of you I meet day in and day out. The confidence I bring you all makes me burst with joy.' A TV source told MailOnline: 'Rose has gone through the audition process with ITV2 and is being considered either for the opening lineup or as a bombshell. 'Rose is friends with many former stars of the show so has a good idea what it's like being in the villa and now she finally has the chance to experience it herself. 'ITV are yet to confirm the cast of Islanders this year but with the start date of the new series around the corner, bosses will be busy making final decisions.' The summer series of Love Island begins on Monday June 9 as 12 Islanders enter the famous villa in the hope of finding a new partner. Host Maya Jama, 30, who's currently holidaying on a yacht in Italy's Amalfi Coast with footballer boyfriend Rúben Dias, 29, returns to present the eight-week season. Maya shared a picture of her with Ruben for the first time on Instagram after the couple started dating following her 2024 split from rapper Stormzy. Last year, Love Island, which has been streamed on ITVX over two billion times, was won by Mimii Ngulube and Josh Oyinsan, the show's first ever black couple to scoop the £50,000 prize. MailOnline has contacted ITV for comment. MailOnline revealed Liverpudlian makeup artist Lucy Quinn will appear on the show as a bombshell once the series is underway. She joins the likes of influencer Sophie Lee, who has also reportedly signed up this year. The 29-year-old, who's a former fire breather from Manchester, suffered a near death experience when she was 22, which left her with severe facial scars. She had been performing a fire-breathing trick which went horribly wrong, causing her to be hospitalised. Sophie has documented the life-changing moment in her book In My Skin, as sources say she aims to challenge beauty standards during her appearance on the series.
