Volcanic Eruption Disrupts Flights in Indonesia
Israa Farhan At least 24 flights were canceled on Monday at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in eastern Indonesia, according to airport director general Ahmad Syaifuddin Shihab. Several international and domestic routes were affected by the ash cloud, prompting airlines to halt services for safety reasons. Jetstar Airways and Virgin Australia canceled multiple flights to and from Australia, while AirAsia Indonesia suspended two domestic connections. Qantas Airways and South Korean carrier Air Busan reported additional delays. Airport authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely to assess further risks to air traffic. Flight disruptions linked to volcanic activity are a common occurrence in Indonesia, which sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Bali, a major tourism hub, is often impacted by such geological events, which can ground flights for hours or even days depending on ash movement and weather conditions. The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has advised local authorities and travelers to remain alert as volcanic activity may continue in the coming days. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

Bali flights nixed after huge Indonesia volcano eruption
[DENPASAR] Dozens of flights to and from Indonesia's Bali island were cancelled on Monday (Jul 7) after a volcano belched a colossal ash tower 18 kilometres into the sky, authorities said. The aviation disruption came just weeks after the same rumbling volcano caused dozens of flight cancellations to and from the popular resort island. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, on the tourist island of Flores, erupted at 11:05 am, the volcanology agency said. 'An eruption of Lewotobi Laki-Laki Volcano occurred... with the observed ash column height reaching approximately 18,000 m above the summit,' the agency said in a statement. It forced the cancellation of 24 flights at Bali's international airport, general manager Ahmad Syaugi Shahab said. 'Several airlines serving the routes to Labuan Bajo (on Flores), Australia, Singapore, and South Korea have confirmed cancellations and delays,' he said in a statement. Sign Up Sign Up He said the airlines included Virgin Australia, Jetstar Airways and AirAsia Indonesia. Despite some carriers cancelling flights, the airport manager said 'the spread of volcanic ash has not affected the Bali airspace'. Australia's Jetstar said several flights were cancelled 'due to volcanic ash caused by an eruption of Mount Lewotobi'. The volcanology agency warned of the possibility of hazardous lahar floods – a type of mud or debris flow of volcanic materials – if heavy rain occurs, particularly for communities near rivers. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The activity level at the volcano was 'very high, marked by explosive eruptions and continuous tremors', geology agency head Muhammad Wafid said in a statement. He also urged residents to stay at least six kilometres away from the volcano and to wear face masks to protect themselves from ash. Last month dozens of flights to and from Bali were cancelled after the volcano erupted. Ash rained down on several communities around the volcano and forced the evacuation of at least one village. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted multiple times in November, killing nine people and forcing thousands to evacuate, as well as the cancellation of scores of international flights to Bali. Laki-Laki, which means man in Indonesian, stands at 1,584 metres and is twinned with the calmer but taller 1,703-metre volcano named Perempuan, after the Indonesian word for woman. Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation, experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. AFP

Jetstar passenger's $3,000 suitcase mistake prompts warning to Aussie travellers
A Jetstar passenger is urging Aussies not to make the same mistake as him after his luggage went missing following a flight from Melbourne to Brisbane three months ago. Brady Watson, 25, jetted north for a work trip at the end of March and, in a rush, grabbed the wrong suitcase at the baggage carousel. He took it home, opened it up, realised it was not his, and promptly returned it to the airport. He was told the other passenger did not take his bag, but it was nowhere to be found. "I took the bag straight back and thought it would just be a seamless transition... but staff said, 'Oh, we actually don't know where your bag has gone'," he told Yahoo News. "It's now been three months and I still don't have it back." Brady claims the airline has made it increasingly more difficult to chase up information, allegedly speaking to several different staff members from different departments who he said hadn't seemed to have communicated with one another. "I've spoken to four different people and no one knows where my bag is. It's all very inconsistent, and it's annoying having to explain the situation to all these different people at Jetstar," he said. Brady said Jetstar make the process of getting your bag back as hard as possible "so eventually you just give up". Brady is hoping for some kind of reimbursement but Jetstar and Brisbane Airport both believe his bag was stolen from the airport before he came back to return the other passenger's bag. The airline told Yahoo News it "acknowledged this has been a really frustrating and inconvenient experience for Mr Watson and our customer service team has done everything they can to assist him". Jetstar said Brady's luggage was flown from Melbourne to Brisbane, and it was put on the baggage carousel after his flight, but someone had taken his bag at the airport. "On the day, Mr Watson mistakenly collected the wrong bag. After his bag couldn't be found, Jetstar understands airport CCTV showed his bag had been taken by someone else and a police investigation was launched," the Jetstar spokesperson said. "Despite everyone's best efforts, it has not been possible to recover Mr Watson's bag. "We know this is an incredibly disappointing outcome, and our team is willing to provide any further assistance we can to the police investigation." Yahoo News understands Jetstar will not be providing any compensation to Brady. Brisbane Airport also say someone had stolen Brady's suitcase from the carousel and the issue is now a police matter. "Despite reviewing video from multiple CCTV cameras, it has not been possible to identify who took the bag, and this is now a matter for police," Brisbane Airport said in a statement provided to Yahoo News. "Incidents like this are extremely rare, and we understand how distressing it would be for the passenger involved. We'd like to take this opportunity to remind all travellers to carefully check that they have collected the correct luggage before leaving the baggage carousel area." In written correspondence from Queensland Police to Brady, seen by Yahoo News, he was told that the CCTV footage was inconclusive due to the placement of the cameras near carousel 1 where Brady's luggage was allegedly collected from. Brady is disappointed the investigation has not recovered his bag which had most of his belongings inside. He had just recently moved to Melbourne and bought clothing for the colder weather. He didn't have travel insurance, explaining he didn't think he would need it for a domestic flight. "All my clothes were in the suitcase, I had just moved to Melbourne and wasn't ready for the cold... the clothes were worth about $3,000. It was a lot of stuff," he said. "You don't expect to need travel insurance when you're flying domestically for only two hours. Brady claims he's now spent $1,500 replacing the lost clothes and is urging others to invest in AirTags. "Put AirTags on your luggage so you can track it down Liam Neeson style," he warned. "And I guess don't fly Jetstar, but what other option do we have. They are definitely the cheapest airline, and they're the cheapest for a reason... Just hug your luggage extra tight the night before your flight because you might not see it again." Ninety-minute delay as fog forces Sydney to Hamilton flight to circle airport
Photo: 123rf A Jetstar flight from Sydney had to circle in a holding pattern on Saturday because fog at Hamilton Airport prevented its landing. A spokesperson for the airport, which recently restarted international flights, said it was out of an abundance of caution. Jetstar said flight JQ165 made two go-arounds, and these are standard procedures. Hamilton Airport chief executive, Mark Morgan, said he believed passengers spent about an extra hour in the air, while flight tracking website reported that the flight was delayed by one hour and 29 minutes.
