Jewish advocacy group says US-backed Israel fuelling war, genocide
In Washington, the advocacy organisation Jewish Voice for Peace demanded 'an immediate halt' to Israeli attacks on Iran, warning that the escalation could ignite a 'full blown regional war'. Posting its statement online, the group argued that 'Decades of internationally‑backed impunity for the Israeli government's war crimes against Palestinians and unconditional military funding from the US have brought us to this point.' Washington supplies Israel with at least $3.8 billion in military aid every year and has approved extra packages since Israel launched its Gaza offensive in October 2023. 'Amid its escalation with Iran, the Israeli government continues to escalate its brutal slaughter and starvation of Palestinians with the funding and backing of the US,' the statement continued. It ended with a stark appeal: 'Israel is committing genocide and instigating regional war. The US must stop arming Israel NOW.'

Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters detained in NYC: Organizers
MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – Dozens of protesters were detained during a pro-Palestinian protest at Maersk's office in Midtown Manhattan, according to organizers. The protest was organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement and Jewish Voice for Peace. More Local News Organizers said around 100 people were detained. Police confirmed several people were taken into custody during a demonstration on 45th Street just before 12 p.m. The NYPD would not confirm the number of people detained. Around 200 people took over the lobby of Maersk, which ships military-related cargo from U.S. government agencies to Israel, according to Reuters. The company has denied shipping arms or ammunition to 'any active conflict zone,' Reuters reported. Protesters are calling on the company to stop any shipments to the Israeli military. 'Maersk is not just a carrier of goods — it is a central player sustaining Israel's military operations. Gaza is in dire need of shipments of aid, not shipments used to slaughter,' said Jay Saper with Jewish Voice for Peace. Maersk did not immediately respond to PIX11's request for comment. Dozens arrested at pro-Gaza protest at Manhattan office building
Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested Wednesday as they staged a sit-in in the lobby of a Midtown East skyscraper, demanding that a company in the building stop providing arms to Israel. Sporting shirts that read 'Stop Starving Gaza' and 'End the Siege,' more than 150 Palestinian and Jewish protesters sat down on the floor and refused to leave the lobby of the E. 45th St. building near Lexington Ave. beginning around 11 a.m. The protesters, members of the Palestinian Youth Movement and Jewish Voice for Peace, were demanding that Maersk, a shipping and logistics company in the building, stop shipping military equipment to the Israeli government. NYPD officers were called to the address and picked protesters up off the floor and took them to an awaiting police van. At least 50 had been taken into custody by the time the protest ended. Protesters also demanded that more food and aid be sent to Gaza following the detention of activists participating in the Freedom Flotilla that had planned to bring needed supplies to the war-torn area. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was on the ship when it was intercepted on its way to Gaza, officials reported this week. Pro-Palestinian protests have been held in New York since Hamas brutally attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. During the ensuing conflict, some protesters have targeted New York City colleges, institutions and companies that either have accepted money from Israel or have supplied money to the country over the years. The exact number of protesters arrested Wednesday was not immediately disclosed. Charges were pending. A spokesman for Maersk said the company was aware of the protest. 'We are grateful the demonstration appears to have been generally peaceful with no reported damage to property, and all Maersk colleagues are safe,' the spokesman said.

Letters to the Editor: Why pro-Palestinian protests can actually help protect Jewish students
To the editor: Although I have no qualms calling out President Trump's exploitation of antisemitism charges to silence dissent and defund education, I object to this article's premise that the college protests make Jews unsafe and would argue the opposite is true ('Being Jewish on campus amid Trump's campaign against antisemitism: 'tremendous heartache,'' June 9). Pro-Palestinian protests on campus increase Jewish people's safety because they challenge the normalization of Israel's bombardment and blockage of food, water, medicine and fuel on a starving and caged population in Gaza. Once we normalize and arm the slaughter and imposition of starvation on Gaza, we normalize crimes against humanity everywhere, leaving us all unsafe. Moreover, Israel's proclamation that it is the state of the Jewish people unfairly associates Jews worldwide with its policies of apartheid and ethnic cleansing. I live in Santa Barbara, where I supported the UCSB encampment in the spring of last year and continue to applaud students of all denominations who say, "Never again means never again for anyone." Equating such protests and encampments with antisemitism does us all a disservice. I do not want to be associated with Israel's war crimes, as alleged by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court, and appreciate the opportunity to participate in the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace.
