David Festa, Twins shut down AL-best Tigers

June 28 - Byron Buxton hit a solo homer and David Festa pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings as the visiting Minnesota Twins downed the Detroit Tigers 4-1 on Friday night. Brooks Lee drove in two runs, Willi Castro scored a run and knocked in another and Buxton scored two runs as the Twins won their third straight following a five-game losing streak. Festa (2-2) allowed just two hits and struck out six Tigers, who have the best record in the American League. Jhoan Duran notched his 12th save by getting the last three outs in the opener of a three-game set. Gleyber Torres had two hits and drove in the lone Tigers run. Starter Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-1) yielded three runs on four hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings while recording five strikeouts. The Tigers had a threat in the second. Spencer Torkelson was hit by a pitch and Dillon Dingler had a two-out single. Parker Meadows was retired on a check-swing comebacker to Festa. Minnesota stranded two runners in the third, then broke through in the fourth. Matt Wallner slashed a two-out double before Lee doubled to right for the first run of the contest. The Twins made it 2-0 the next inning on Buxton's two-out homer to left which traveled an estimated 425 feet. Minnesota tacked on a run in the sixth. Castro walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Ty France walked with one out, Lee singled to center to score Castro. Minnesota took a 4-0 lead in the seventh. Buxton walked, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. He scored on Castro's sacrifice bunt. Detroit stranded two runners in the seventh, then got on the scoreboard in the eighth. Colt Keith tripled with one out and scored on Torres' RBI single. Zach McKinstry's single put runners on the corners. McKinstry stole second, but reliever Griffin Jax responded by striking out Riley Greene and Torkelson to end the inning. --Field Level Media

Phillies Involved In Trade Buzz Surrounding $4.1 Million Pitcher

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies desperately need to add a closer ahead of the trade deadline. It's clearly their biggest need this season. With Jose Alvarado out for the postseason because of his ongoing PED suspension, Philadelphia needs to swing a massive move to add another arm or two. Luckily for them, there are a lot of high-leverage options expected to be on the trade block. Michael Hennelly of That Ball's Outta Here recently suggested the Phillies could look to swing a trade for Minnesota Twins closer Jhoan Duran ahead of the trade deadline. More Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images "After losing nine of the last 10 games, including three straight losses, the Twins could be in a position to be sellers as the trade deadline nears," Hennelly wrote. "Like the Guardians, the Twins feature a dominant closer who should draw plenty of interest from reliever-needy teams. "Jhoan Duran has recorded 68 saves throughout his first four seasons in the majors and is enjoying a career year in 2025. The right-hander owns a career-low 1.57 ERA and has 10 saves in 12 opportunities. Like Clase, Duran comes with club control, and he won't be a free agent until 2028. He may not garner as much trade value as Clase, but Duran will require a hefty package if the Twins decide to trade their closer." If the Phillies are willing to headline a trade package with prospect Mick Abel, the Twins would likely be open to trading their closer. Since Duran has a few years of team control on his deal, he's going to be a lot harder to trade for than somebody like Aroldis Chapman or Ryan Helsley. But with Duran's talent, this kind of deal would be very worth it for the Phillies. If they can find a way to steal him from the Twins, it would be the best-case scenario for Philadelphia. Joe Ryan strikes out eight as Twins blank Mariners

June 26 - Right-hander Joe Ryan struck out eight batters over six scoreless innings, and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 2-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night in Minneapolis. Kody Clemens hit a solo home run for Minnesota, which snapped a five-game losing streak and won for only the second time in its past 13 games. Willi Castro also drove in a run. Seattle managed only three hits in the game, all of which were singles. Cal Raleigh, who leads the big leagues with 32 home runs, finished 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Ryan (8-3) allowed three hits in six scoreless innings. The veteran starter walked none and threw 61 of 93 pitches for strikes. Mariners right-hander George Kirby (1-4) took the hard-luck loss despite limiting Twins hitters to one run on three hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out three. Twins closer Jhoan Duran pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his 11th save. He finished with no walks and one strikeout. The Twins broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth. Byron Buxton started the scoring opportunity when he singled to center with one out and advanced to second base on a groundout by Trevor Larnach. In the next at-bat, Castro delivered a two-out single to right to drive in Buxton. Clemens hit a solo home run to double the Twins' lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh. He jumped on the first pitch he saw and hit a 389-foot blast to center for his ninth homer of the season and his second in as many games. Twins relievers Louis Varland, Griffin Jax and Duran combined for three scoreless innings to preserve the shutout. The Twins had not blanked an opponent since May 17, when they shut out the Milwaukee Brewers. Minnesota had allowed six-plus runs in its previous five games. --Field Level Media
