Inside Gaza's humanitarian aid ‘death traps'
Five times, Jihad has trekked through southern Gaza – past Israeli tanks, soldiers and sometimes drones overhead – to reach aid sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Five times, he has queued in caged alleys on the approach to the distribution sites, jostling alongside thousands of men preparing for the frantic sprint to snatch whatever food they can.

Israeli strikes kill 43 in Gaza as truce talks stalls
GAZA CITY: Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli air strikes on Sunday killed more than 40 Palestinians, including at a market and a water distribution point, as talks for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas stalled. Delegations from Israel and the Palestinian militant group have now spent a week trying to agree on a temporary truce to halt 21 months of devastating fighting in the Gaza Strip. But on Saturday, each side accused the other of blocking attempts to secure an agreement at the indirect talks in the Qatari capital, Doha. On the ground, civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal said at least 43 people were killed in the latest Israeli strikes, including 11 when a market in Gaza City was hit. Elsewhere, eight children were among the 10 victims of a drone strike at a water point in the Nuseirat refugee camp, in central Gaza, Bassal said. Israel's military blamed a Jihad. 'As a result of a technical error with the munition, the munition fell dozens of meters from the target,' a statement read. 'The incident is under review.' Reports of casualties were being examined, it added. Khaled Rayyan told AFP he was woken by the sound of two large explosions after a house was hit in Nuseirat. 'Our neighbour and his children were under the rubble,' he said. Another resident, Mahmud al-Shami, called on the negotiators to secure an end to the war. 'What happened to us has never happened in the entire history of humanity,' he said. 'Enough.' The Israeli military, which has recently intensified operations across Gaza, said in a statement that in the past 24 hours the air force 'struck more than 150 terror targets throughout the Gaza Strip'. It released aerial footage of what it said were fighter jet strikes attacking Hamas targets around Beit Hanoun, in northern Gaza, showing explosions on the ground and thick smoke in the sky. Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify tolls and details provided by the civil defence agency and other parties. UN agencies on Saturday warned that fuel shortages had reached 'critical levels', threatening to worsen conditions for Gaza's more than two million people. On Sunday, the Handala — a former Norwegian trawler loaded with medical supplies, food and children's equipment — set off from Sicily. The pro-Palestinian activists on board hope to reach Gaza, despite Israel having recently detained and deported people aboard a previous vessel, the Madleen, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. Talks to seal a 60-day ceasefire and hostage release were in the balance on Saturday after Israel and Hamas accused each other of trying to block a deal.

Allahabad HC denies bail to man for sharing 'Pakistan Zindabad' post on social media
LUCKNOW: Observing that the judiciary's tolerance towards cases with anti-national overtones was contributing to the rise in such incidents, the Allahabad High Court denied bail to a 62-year-old man for sharing a 'Pakistan Zindabad' post on a social media platform. The court said his anti-national conduct did not entitle him to seek protection of his right to liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. Rejecting the bail plea of Ansar Ahmad Siddique, the bench comprising Justice Siddharth said, 'Commission of such offences is becoming a routine affair in this country because the courts are liberal and tolerant towards such acts of people with anti-national bent of mind. It is not a fit case for enlarging the applicant on bail at this stage.' The court further observed, 'Clearly, the act of the applicant is disrespectful to the Constitution and its ideals. His act amounts to challenging the sovereignty of India and adversely affecting the unity and integrity of the country by sharing anti-social and anti-Indian posts. The applicant is a senior citizen and his age shows that he was born in independent India. His irresponsible and anti-national conduct does not entitle him to seek protection of his right to liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.' However, while denying bail, the court directed that the trial be concluded against the applicant as expeditiously as possible. As per the FIR, the applicant had shared a post on the social media platform Facebook, making an appeal for propagating Jihad, complemented by the slogan 'Pakistan Zindabad'. The accused had also urged his community to support their Pakistani brothers. It is alleged that such a post hurt national sentiments and militated against India's sovereignty and integrity. It had also hurt the sentiments of Indian citizens.

Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Helen Trew, chief executive of Art 27 Scotland, said the festival overall had faced a "daily backlash" on social media, warning there was a "cultural censorship" of Palestinian arts. Ms Kalani, who is performing Palestinian folk music with her trio at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, said: 'I've been abused culturally and personally.' She said attacks ranged from her personal appearance and religion and ethnicity, to jokes about Jihad and starving children in Gaza. Posts included 'guys I think I found the reason for Gazan food shortage' and 'should have a festival, maybe call it, oh…I don't know…….Nova….?', referencing the music festival in Israel that was attacked by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Ms Trew said the festival's social media accounts had suffered repeated accusations of policy violations every day - resulting in their posts being temporarily suspended - as well as abusive comments aimed at Palestinian culture. Art 27 Scotland was named from Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states 'everyone has the right freely to participate in cultural life and to enjoy the arts'. Some audience members have already asked if it is safe for them to attend the festival's events.
