Lorde releases new album 'Virgin': Read her heartfelt post about the project
Lorde's new album, " Virgin," is out today and the singer is opening up about the heartfelt meaning behind the project. The "What Was That" singer shared an Instagram post on Friday and said she feels "simply crazy," explaining how the new album came to life. "For a long time an album is just a handful of word docs and Logic sessions, a couple whiteboards, a raw image from a medical scanner in an undisclosed country lol," she began. "I tried to love Virgin right the way through these stages at the same time as I was learning to love myself in my many stages of change, growth, brokenness and wholeness." She continued, "I'm still in shock and awe that so many of my heroes worked on Virgin — it has changed me collaborating with people this good." She ended her post by saying, "This album broke me apart and forged a new creature out of me. I am so proud to stand before you today as her, grateful for this beautiful life spent singing to myself and to you, for as long as you'll have me." The new album includes the singles: "What Was That," "Hammer" and "Man of the Year." Lorde co-produced the album with Jim-E Stack. This September, Lorde will embark on the Ultrasound World Tour in support of her new album. According to a press release, the tour has already sold out multiple nights at Madison Square Garden, London's O2 Arena and Kia Forum. Her tour will kick off in Austin and make stops in Boston, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Las Vegas as well as stops across Europe, before wrapping up in Brooklyn, New York, on December 17.

Released on Friday, June 27, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter has filled her latest album with raw honesty and vulnerability. Collaborating closely with producer Jim-E Stack, along with contributors like Dev Hynes and Daniel Nigro, Lorde carefully crafted each track over the past couple of years in cityscapes from London to New York. "What Was That", a powerful break-up anthem, is the album's lead single. It further unfolds with tracks such as "Man of the Year", "Shapeshifter", "Broken Glass" and "Hammer". Lorde Summer Is Upon Us As Pop Star Releases Latest Album ‘Virgin': Stream It Now
Patience is a virtue, a fact that fans of New Zealand-born pop phenomenon Lorde have learned time and time again throughout her career. But luckily, patience is no longer required when it comes to the singer's newest full-length project. On Friday (June 27), Lorde unveiled her much-anticipated fourth studio album, Virgin. Released via Universal Music, the new album features 11 new songs, including its three previously released singles 'What Was That,' 'Man of the Year' and 'Hammer.' 'LIKE BATHWATER, WINDOWS, ICE, SPIT. FULL TRANSPARENCY. THE LANGUAGE IS PLAIN AND UNSENTIMENTAL,' she explained of the record. 'I WAS TRYING TO SEE MYSELF, ALL THE WAY THROUGH. I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A DOCUMENT THAT REFLECTED MY FEMININITY: RAW, PRIMAL, INNOCENT, ELEGANT, OPENHEARTED, SPIRITUAL, MASC.' While the singer touted the importance of having some of the same sounds throughout the project, one thing that remains very different about Virgin is the producers the singer teamed up with; the LP boasts a series of new collaborators for the singer, including Jim-E Stack, Dan Nigro and Dev Hynes, while her Melodrama and Solar Power producer Jack Antonoff doesn't make an appearance. While Lorde called Antonoff a 'positive, supportive collaborator,' she added that 'I just have to trust when my intuition says to keep moving.' In the lead-up to the new project, Lorde also spoke extensively about how Virgin was inspired by her recent examination of gender. The singer said that a conversation with fellow pop star Chappell Roan prompted her to think more critically about her own gender identity. 'I was like, 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man,'' she said. 'I know that's not a very satisfying answer, but there's a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.' Lorde's New Song ‘Hammer' Is ‘an Ode to City Life and Horniness'
Lorde's back with a new single. 'Hammer' is the third offering from her upcoming album, Virgin, which will officially drop a week from today. It's the first track on the LP and, as Lorde put it, is 'an ode to city life and horniness tbh.' Written by her and Jim-E Stack, the song pays homage to both of those themes with the opening lines: 'There's a heat in the pavement, my mercury's raising / Don't know if it's love or if it's ovulation.' Some lyrics also nod to gender expression: 'Some days I'm a woman, some days I'm a man,' she sings. On her website, Lorde described the song as, 'MAGIC JEWELRY. NINE MOONS. LARRY THE PIGEON MAN. FLIRTING WITH THE GUY AT MNZ. OVULATION. CRISP SPRING SUN. IMMENSE GRATITUDE TO BE ALIVE. BRAIDING WITH LANGUAGE. BUDDY'S GRANULAR SYNTH. LOGIC OPEN ON THE PLANE. BIG BREAKTHROUGH IN LONDON. FIRST SONG SENT TO MIX. ALWAYS TRACK 1. THE SOUND OF MY REBIRTH.' Earlier today, she dropped the music video directed by Renell Medrano. She's shown swinging naked in a hammock, smoking with her friends, running in a field, and getting a butt tattoo in the woods. You can check out the full lyrics to the track below, courtesy of Genius.

Lorde Celebrates ‘Man of the Year' in New Video
Lorde continues teasing her fourth album, Virgin, with second single 'Man of the Year.' The track follows her April release 'What Was That.' Like the entirety of Virgin, Lorde worked on the song with producer Jim-E Stack. The track also features Dev Hynes on cello. On the mid-tempo single, Lorde reflects on her 'recent ego-death,' singing about how we're meeting her at a very strange time in her life. The accompanying music video features the singer-songwriter alone in a room in a white tee and jeans. As the song progresses, she peels off her shirt and duct-tapes her breasts before she sings, 'Now I'm broken open/Let's hear it for the man of the year.' More from Rolling Stone Everything We Know About Lorde's Upcoming Album 'Virgin' Benson Boone Delivers a Tender Tribute With 'Momma Song' The Everyday Items That Inspired Lorde's New Album, From 5 Gum to Apple Headphones In her Rolling Stone cover story, Lorde revealed that the song was an integral part of her understanding the fluidity of her own gender identity. She recalled sitting on the floor of her apartment, trying to visualize a version of herself 'that was fully representative of how [her] gender felt in that moment.' She landed on an image of herself wearing men's jeans, duct tape on her chest, and a gold chain. 'I went to the cupboard, and I got the tape out, and I did it to myself,' she said. 'I have this picture staring at myself. I was blond [at the time]. It scared me what I saw. I didn't understand it. But I felt something bursting out of me. It was crazy. It was something jagged. There was this violence to it.' The song was also written shortly after Lorde chose to stop taking birth control for the first time since she was a teenager. It led to her ovulating for the first time in years, an experience she likened to the 'best drug' she's ever done. 'I felt like stopping taking my birth control, I had cut some sort of cord between myself and this regulated femininity,' she said. 'It sounds crazy, but I felt that all of a sudden, I was off the map of femininity. And I totally believed that that allowed things to open up.' Lorde described herself as 'in the middle gender-wise.' She still uses she/her pronouns and identifies as a cis woman. Virgin is set to release on June 27, four years after her last album, Solar Power.
