City gripped by stomach diseases amid sweltering heat
With temperatures and humidity spiking in the metropolis, a fresh outbreak of gastrointestinal diseases has gripped the city, as public and private hospitals report a daily influx of patients suffering from vomiting, diarrhoea, and cholera. According to health officials, the rise in stomach-related illnesses is being fuelled by the consumption of contaminated water and unhygienic food, aggravated by improper storage practices in extreme heat. The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) is receiving between 50 to 60 patients each day showing symptoms of food poisoning and dehydration, while the Civil Hospital is dealing with nearly 80 cases daily, sources in the Emergency Departments said. Dr Imran Sarwar, Emergency In-charge at Civil Hospital, said most patients are suffering from severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. "Food spoils quickly in this heat, especially when it is not refrigerated properly. People are unknowingly consuming contaminated or expired food," he said. Dr Sarwar added that in several cases, patients are brought to hospital three or more days after the onset of symptoms, by which time their condition has deteriorated. "In some critical cases, low cretonne levels have impacted kidney function, and the patients had to undergo dialysis," he added. Health experts urge people to prioritise hygiene and preventive care during the ongoing hot and humid conditions. They recommend a light, easily digestible diet, including khichdi, yogurt, and bananas, along with regular intake of fluids. Karachiites have also been advised to keep oral rehydration salts (ORS) on hand. In case ORS packets are unavailable, a simple solution can be made at home using a pinch of salt and sugar mixed in warm water.

Pakistani actor Humaira Asghar Ali found dead in Karachi flat
Pakistani actress and model Humaira Asghar Ali, 32, was found dead in her Karachi flat on Tuesday. Police said her body was found after officers arrived at her home in the Defence Housing Authority neighbourhood to enforce a court-ordered eviction. According to a Dawn report, officers from the Gizri police station broke down Ali's door after a court-appointed bailiff received no response and found her body lying inside. Ali, who lived alone, had reportedly not paid her rent since 2024, prompting the landlord to seek legal action. South Karachi police chief Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that the flat's doors, including the balcony entrance, were locked from the inside and showed no signs of forced entry, leading investigators to rule out foul play. According to Geo News, neighbours had not seen the actress in several weeks and noticed a foul smell coming from her flat. Police suspect that she died some two weeks before her body was found and are working to trace her relatives through mobile phone records. 'It appeared that the body was several days old,' Mr Raza said. The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where a postmortem examination was done on Tuesday night. Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition and the exact cause of death could not yet be determined. She said forensic and toxicology tests would be required before conclusions could be drawn. 'The cause of death is reserved,' she said. Ali was born in Lahore and trained in Visual and Performing Arts at the National College of Arts as well as the College of Art and Design at Punjab University. She was best known for her appearance in the ARY Digital reality show Tamasha Ghar and her role in the 2015 film Jalaibee. In 2023, she received a National Woman Leadership Award for her contribution to media and entertainment. Tamasha Ghar host Adnan Siddiqui posted a tribute to Ali on Instagram. 'Deeply shocked and saddened,' he said. 'A young life cut so short suddenly. May you be in peace Humaira and your family get the strength to deal with the vacuum you have left behind.' Ali's Ehsaan Faramosh co-star Atiqa Odho posted a picture with her from their time working on the show. 'Woke up to this shocking and tragic news. Unbelievable as she had so much life to look forward to,' he said on Instagram. 'We worked in Ehsaan Faramosh serial together and she was such a gentle soul. Never thought that she would leave us so soon. I hope authorities get to the truth and we find out what happened to Humaira Asghar so that we may be able to help others in the future before we lose them in this unfortunate manner. Tragic, tragic, tragic. Humaira, may you rest in peace my dear, wherever you are. Ameen.'

All-women breast radiation bay construction starts
The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), in a major step towards enhancing cancer care for women in Pakistan, has started the construction of the state-of-the-art "Bilquis Abdul Sattar Edhi Breast Radiation Bay", a facility aimed at providing international standard radiation therapy exclusively for female breast cancer patients, operated entirely by an all-women medical staff. Speaking to The Express Tribune, JPMC Executive Director, Professor Shahid Rasool, revealed that the facility is aimed at addressing both the medical and emotional needs of women suffering with breast cancer. The new radiation bay is expected to cater to 200 to 250 patients, daily, upon completion. The facility is to be equipped with two cutting-edge Helix Tomotherapy machines, which are capable of automatically adjusting during minor patient movements, ensuring precision by targeting only cancer-affected cells. This feature is especially critical during the hour-long radiation sessions when patients may inadvertently move. The new facility will use some of the most advanced global technology in cancer treatment Professor Rasool highlighted that traditional radiation therapy, particularly for left-side breast cancer, poses risks to the heart. The new machines will employ Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technology, allowing radiation to be delivered while the patient holds a deep breath, increasing the distance between the heart and breast tissue, thereby reducing cardiac risk. Notably, the entire facility staff will be women, providing emotional and psychological comfort to patients who often undergo not only physical pain, but also intense mental stress and feelings of shame and inferiority due to the nature of their illness. "Hearing the word 'cancer' is devastating enough," Rasool noted, "but for many women, the treatment process brings feelings of vulnerability and embarrassment. Having female staff can offer some much-needed dignity and support." The facility is expected to be operational by January-February 2026.

Father of two shot dead resisting robbery
In a brazen daylight robbery in Gulshan-e-Hadeed on Monday, three motorcycle-borne assailants ambushed 28-year-old Alam Khan and his two companions moments after they withdrew Rs890,000 from a bank. They then shot Khan dead. According to eyewitnesses, the bandits intercepted Khan's vehicle, demanded the cash at gunpoint, and opened fire when he resisted, killing him instantly, while his companions miraculously escaped unharmed. The perpetrators then fled with both the cash and Khan's licensed pistol. The deceased's body was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). Rahmat Jan Mahsood, cousin of the deceased, revealed that Khan was a father of two, and was running his own car business. He had recently purchased a car from a Gulshan-e-Hadeed resident whom he was heading to pay when he was ambushed. Expressing concerns about the city's safety, Rahmat said "People are being forced to sacrifice their lives for their own money." He alleged that the bandits likely had inside information about Khan carrying money, possibly from associates near the bank. Khan's relatives demand an investigation into the incident, appealing for the swift arrest of the killers. With this incident, the number of citizens killed resisting robberies in the city this year hit 30. Khan's killing sparked immediate protests, with family members, local residents, and car showroom owners blocking both tracks of the national highway, causing traffic congestion on the Karachi-Thatta road. To alleviate the situation, traffic police diverted traffic from Port Qasim and Link Road to the inner areas. The protest, which lasted for more than five hours, not only brought the traffic system to a standstill but also caused massive traffic jams, putting commuters in a nerve-wracking situation. Several citizens trapped in the severe traffic congestion said that a day earlier, on Sunday evening, a large number of area residents had also staged a demonstration against the rising incidents of street crimes and the poor performance of the police. During that protest as well, both tracks of the National Highway were blocked, causing serious difficulties for the general public. "On one hand, citizens are being robbed at gunpoint, and on the other, they are losing their lives to the robbers' bullets," lamented one protester. The protest over the car showroom owner's killing by robbers was finally called off by the demonstrators at 7:45pm, after which traffic was restored.
